I felt the horror of listening to Eastern European dubs, so I can say that German dubs are high quality. Especially since they stopped dubbing everything; the songs in "My Musical" are subtitled for example.

And I totally disagree with your argumentation. In fact dubbing is the only possibility to bring foreign shows into the market since at least Germany and France have the possibility to produce quality shows on their own.

European nations being relatively low on English speaking people has a simple reason: They never were subject to the British Empire.

In most European countries every kid in school is taught English. Most are also taught a second or even third foreign language, usually French, German, Spanish, Russian or Latin. How well they speak obviously depends on talent and practice but they do far better in foreign countries than most US-citizen would do in non-english countries.

Dude, I spoke fluent English when I was at the age of 12! All I ever did was watch English subbed movies and shows. It's just a great way to learn a language. You hear the words, and you read what they mean... And you can say whatever they want, but in Holland, at least 75% of the population speaks English. There's no wáy Spain, Germany and France can compete with that, and dubbing their shows is one of the reasons...

I've prefered to watch all "the big bang theory" and most of "Heroes" because the Italian dubbings weren't so good (in particular for th big band theory XP) but I prefer to watch "scrubs" in Italian. I agree with you on the fact that learning English by watching subtitled movies and series is a practicle and effective way to learn it.
