Thanks a lot for your tip to "wrap the box in a blanket". I was trying to prepare yogurt since long time and was unsuccessful... with your tip now I am able to prepare yogurt..
Thank you .. thanks a lot...
Please do share such nice tips... All your videos are very helpful and easy to learn cooking.
Thank you for posting this video. The two spoonfuls of yogurt that you saved aside to make the next batch of yogurt: how long can u keep that spoonful of yogurt? do u freeze it or keep in the fridge? How long before it goes bad?
Aunty, thank you SO much for this recipe. I've been wanting to make my own yogurt for a while and never knew how to make it. I love your youtube channel!
hi mangula i make beter yogurt dhan you without dhe starer i boil milk leted to become worm luck and i throu inn two tablespon old yougurt and an dhje morning you can cutt with nife i loved jane an nj
Lovely recipe! I made it and it turned out really good. Anyhow, I've been seen some recipes in which people leave the yogurt for 8 hours. Do you think it''d turn out too sour, have you ever tried it, Manjula?
Thank you very much Manjula! I have enjoyed so many of your videos. You always do a wonderful job explaining and showing your process. I've never made yogurt homemade before but will definitely be trying now that I see how easy it is.
@FaadumoArdo it works fine my mom makes it all the time. if you use full cream milk it even comes with loves yummy layer of cream on the top.....i think it taste better wen u mak it with old yoghurt rather than starters...:)
I would suggest rather covering into blanket or sheet just use any hot pot(usualy we use for making food hot for long time) put milk into it it should not be very hot ...just pput ur finnger and check if it is warm add 2-3 spoon of curd in it and put it for 1-2 hour(dont leave for long time or else it would be very sour....
@amitkatiyar2000 the need to cover the milk is to insulate it duting the process. In summer, if you have a hot area in your home, you can leave it uncovered. I usually leave it on top of the fridge, & it works just fine. Leaving it inside the oven works too, you don't need to warm it.
Dear Aunty, Thank You very much for this video. My yogurt always turns out to be of runny consistency. i will try ur technique. Please tell me which brand pan you are using for hetaing the milk on stove top? Which store did you get it from here in US? Please let me know. I have seen you use this pan for many of your recipes. This looks like a fine utensil to do frying also, without wasting a lot of oil, which remains in the end.
Thanks so much for the recipe. For those asking, you dont need the powdered starter. You just need 2 - 3 tblsp of yogurt mixed with about 2 tblsp of room temperature milk. Once the boiled milk comes to the required temperature of 115-120 (I did about 104F), just pour in the yogurt in and follow the rest of her directions. Bon appetit!
@dewalii I bought it from amazonDOTcom a while back...the brand is Salton. It was really cheap as well...i think it was $14.99 :) You may find yogurt makers at health food stores as well...i just saw one at a natural/organic health food store for about $34.99 :)
I use Danon plain yogurt as a starter or Trader Joe's plain Greek yogurt. They work well. I put the yogurt inside a small cooler with blankets around it for insulation. You need the warmth to culture the yogurt bacteria so it gets happy and firms up the milk. I usually bring my temperature down to about 100 F, for a really smooth yogurt. Can't wait tp try her version at a higher temperature for both boiling and cooling.
@MarvyLoves you can use any "live" yoghurt as a starter. Heating the milk is a tradition in India, or so I am led to understand - you should not use "raw" milk. If you are using bought milk, that is already pasteurized, therefore heating to approx 30-35°C is enough.
If you have the luck and get fresh milk, you should heat it to 80°C, and leave it to cool while sealed. A good tip is to leave the spoon you are going to use in the heated milk, or sterilize it separately. Sterilize the dish too, ofc
For those in cold climates: I make yogurt using Erivan brand yogurt as a starter (available in healthfood stores) Boil milk and cool to 110 F then stir in 3 TBSP of the yogurt. Pour milk into a well cleaned mason jar (I use the quart size with a plastic screw cap) Wrap a heating pad and set on low heat for 3-10 hrs depending on how sour you want it. Keeps for a few weeks in the fridge.
@lcooke you need to cover it, in order to prevent other "hungry" bacteria from developing in the yoghurt culture :) you want only your friendly ones working on the milk.
I have been making yogurt for a couple of years now, and use the very same technique. It is just that easy! Yogurt has also helped my sister maintain good blood sugar levels (she's diabetic). We always have it on hand, and make a new batch every other day. Thank you for sharing this recipe with everyone!
thanks a lot reminded me of my grandmother who always preferred upon the use of mud utensils especially the one made of black clay...i still use that to make yogurt,....thanks a lot auntyji for the recipe.
You can put the bowl into a supermarket refrigeration shopping bag or any cooler bag to keep yoghurt warm. This way you can make large amounts in big pots.
I bought a yogurt maker a while ago...it makes it so easy because it keeps the yogurt warm :) I also like to leave it out longer because I LOVE sour yogurt...especially with khichdi :)
@Gerene37 You can use 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt to start it. Just make sure it has live culture - most do these days. I've been doing it this way for months. I just keep a little left over from my last batch to make the next.
@kenokiatgmail : the problem with store bought yoghurt is that it makes your new yoghurt stringy (when u take a spoonful it doesn't come out like a piece instead there is a string that drips) and the texture also varies. But a lot of people do use it.
i love homemde yogurt my mom buys full fat bulk style yogurt instead of using the starter and goes through the exact same steps u used to this and at the end she adds the bulk style yogurt and it works really well...but id like to see if i can buy started somewhere too and give this a try!
Looks delicious. Can you use some of the store-bought yogurt to use as a starter (like Pavel's brand or something like that) instead of the special starter?
Also, how long does it last (assuming you don't finish all of it immediately)?
Thank you Mam for the nice video, we are in Syria making the yogurt at home from the fresh cow milk in the same way you are doing it... Thanks again i really love the Indian food
