Okay, to get things straight, Death Metal was intended to be a faster heavier version of thrash, so yes, they did inspire Death Metal, and No the first Death Metal band was NOT Death, It was Possessed, They even coined the term Death Metal with the song and the Album later on, Death just perfected the art. In the same way that Elvis Presley is the king of Rock and thought by many to of started it, but it was really Buddy Holly who started it.

Well to be really honest I just listen to there earlier albums and sometimes christ illusion and world painted blood but there latest albums is still a little to heavy for my tast but it still isn't death metal. Listen to children of bodom's cover of silent scream and then slayer's original and you will understand what i'm saying.
