Once I get my laptop fixed, I plan to install Fduntu first and see how that goes. If I don't like it, I'll move over to Fedora with the Cinnamon Desktop.
@az7450 there isn't a design for Linux. Linux is a kernel. OS makers make distributions, so the distribution may copy OS X, but not every Linux OS does.
This CarrierIQ is perfectly legal under national security right, and under homeland security, and FEMA, they need to be able to take over your devices and know where you are in the case of emergency is what they say, and in case you're a terrorist they have a legal right to presume you guilty and therefore spy on you.
its funny. i just got done burning a linux mint dvd. i had just tested windows 8 metro for 2 days and even after regedting it back to a 7 desktop i didnt like it. i was also really annoyed and was pissed off about ubuntu unity and their current direction. its like someone was reading my mind. will try Mint Mate out for sure here.
good going with reporting on the carrier iq stuff. i hope some people go to jail for some of this obviously illegal crap. more people need to know about it.
Well, sort of. I'm also a Linux Mint fan, but Linux Mint 12 is one big regression compared to Mint 11. They should've just focused on MATE and dumped Gnome 3 altogether. Hate Gnome 3. No right click reminds me of ancient Mac crap that nobody likes.
@goblend not anytime soon, read his blogs and his website he along with other members of the JupiterBroadcasting team that have departed in the past months have other ventures that keep them too busy
2 comments: Your ATI issues were a GNOME 3 problem. The GNOME team decided that they don't care about desktops so they broke support with proprietary drivers.
2nd: Mint can be a tinkerer's distribution. I currently have Mint with Gnome-session and a dock (no shell), Mint with Unity, Mint with XFCE... you can always tinker with it. The fact that it works is just a bonus ;)
I don't want to be an jerk, but Chris is a Mint fanboy. Reasons? OpenSuse installs MP3 and flash support on the first update. Fedora has a really easy way by adding RPM-fusion and installing codecs. Any average computer user could do that. OpenSuse also has the power-off button by default installed (Fedora not). Please give other distro's a fair chance, they all have their pros and cons. I got the feeling that you only look at how great the menus are, instead of looking at the overall picture.
@LordBas2 thats funny cause i hate Mint's menu but everything else is solid, yet OpenSuse and Fedora are horrible to work with in comparison. Atleast from my mucking around with them, Mint just works it doesn't need updates after install.
You are right though that each has it's advantages, Suse and Fedora have large repositories whereas Mint takes from Debian & Ubuntu and pulls good stuff from both.
personally i do think the Software Manager and Menu need an overhaul on the looks front
wtf ? they didn't fucking add toogle off notifications or other any other shit from the User Menu, thats default with gnome 3.2.The shell theme isn't made by them, been using it way before mint 12.They just made the panel bottom and some a few extensions + faenza icons.
I couldn't enable 2D acceleration in Virtualbox when I tried Mint 12 and had all sorts of issues during the installation. It crashed once, etc. This release feels rushed out. But I think it will improve, as usual, with time.
Devs/Cooks have been removing CIQ from Evo 4G roms for a while, even on Sense roms. But I always use and suggest AOSP (Android Open-Source Project) roms.
Brilliant! I particularly like Allan's comments about "the type of people who chatter all day on Twitter probably aren't the same users who use Linux" - Golden :)
Mint 12 seems to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. Gnome 3 needs work and Mate needs work. Mint 11 however works great but will be unspported within a year :-(
Hold ALT key down to show the shutdown option on default gnome-shell.....
As for the best gnome 3 implementation.... I am quite suprised to See Pinguy 11.10 beta to have a far better gnome 3 Desktop.... you guys should give it a try
In my honest opinion, I think Mint 12's release came a bit early.
Both Gnome and Mate are in early development. But sure they need feedback, and that's probably why they always seem to release these distros way before they are stable.
But still not the ability to buy paid software in their software center.
Could you guys do a tutorial on how to enable that feature In Mint?
Performance wise Ubuntu still beats Mint 12, I think Mint can catch up to Ubuntu if they can polish their Mint 12 before Ubuntu 12.04. I would not install mint for a beginner or Ubuntu 11.10.
Seems to be a bug in Mint 12 Gnome 3 desktop that going into the properties of a .run file it wont let you chose run as executable, ticking it just unticks it immediately.
Works fine under the Mate desktop, so you can install the drivers/software in Mate and then switch to Gnome 3 and its installed atleast thats the only way i could install the ATI drivers from AMD since for me the drivers supplied by the distro don't work with my HD 6990.
i installed the amd gpu driver via the additional driver. after i restart i also get that rainbow color all over my taskbar and text on menus look weird. also downloading the driver from amd, installing it, doesnt seem to do anything the whole thing still feels sluggish like if the gpu is not present. especially when i play on wine.
The menu on the top right with the notification button is not something mint added, it was added with vanilla gnome 3.2. Also the tool for tweaking settings you were looking for at the beginning of the review was "gnome-tweak-tool".
I used to be a big fan of mint. Not so much anymore. Mate looks old and just for a computer to work properly it doesn't need to look outdated. Not a fan of gnome 3 either. OpenSuse 12.1 may be the best distro so far.
@nvanadium i agree with your mint opnion, but havving tried and still trying opensuse 12.1,i have to say it was't a breeze either, yast was horrible, endless updates, tons of error messsages even in the default repos?!installing codecs was areal pain, and installing vlc breaks all other codecs,it was mess.brfs looks promising but still slow, and the repos are outdated.fedora 16 was neat (the kde version)and yum was almost as good as apt.i have to give the edge to kubuntu 11.10 though
installed linux mint 12 booted it ⇒ desktop freeze. Installed XFCE at least that doesn't freeze permanently.

In Fedora, just press alt key and you're able to shutdown.
The mint menu is exactly the same as what you'll get in Fedora's Gnome 3 in Fall-back mode.
