Actually, the lead singer for this song and Kansas' Fight Fire With Fire was John Elefante. It blew me away when I found this out a few minutes ago. I had always thought that Steve Walsh sang all the lead vocals.
This song is okay, but isn't classic Kansas. They could have used Robby Steinhardt or David Ragsdale on violin. That instrument really helped give Kansas their unique sound. The Kansas albums "Drastic Measures", "Power" and "In the Spirit of Things" didn't feature the violin and are easily confused with most albums by commercial rock bands.
I saw this video once on a local UHF station in the NYC Metro area (Channel 68), then ran out and bought the album almost immediately just for this one song. To this day, I've never listened to the rest of the record.
The making of the wrestling scenes took about 17 hours to complete, the director was Dominic Orlando it is a great song and "Kansas" was great to work with. This video was done right about the same time Cindy Laupers "Girls just wanna have fun" and the group was about to take a break from each other. The wrap party was held at "War's" studio in Hollywood, Ca. Fantastic party!
In a day when videos really were bizarre and inexplicable, this one was the head of the class. I remember seeing this on MTV back in 1983 but it was so strange. I am not sure what CBS was trying to do in promoting the band is such a strange video. Not to mention it has nothing to do with the actual song. Just a really auful video for a great song and band.
Well, I never knew they made a video for this. Althouh I don't quite get what's with the pro wrestling angle. It seems to follow in the very trippy (and rather cheesy) footsteps of their "Fight Fire With Fie" video, although this is admittedly not quite as cheesy. But still a very good song dealing with sycophantic idol worship.
I agree with you on what you said. The only thing I personally can think of for the wrestling angle is that when this record came out (1984 I believe) wresting was starting to hit it off big time (Hulk Hogan and the like) and maybe they were trying to cash in on it? Just my humble opinion right or wrong....
@Looking1231 I think you're right. Good song, though. I do like Jon Elefante's voice, I think they did some relly good songs with him. Considering the shoes he had to fill (Steve Walsh), they probably got the best guy for the lead vocal job for those 2 albums they did with him. One of these days I'll attempt "Play The Game Tonight" at karaoke. Won't be easy, since he does get his voice up there. :)
@BobCubTAC Good luck with the karaoke!! From what I hear and understand, John's voice is still as strong as it was back then and if you can get your voice like that, more power to you!! :)
Man, I remember hearing this in my friend's basement for the first time, something like 26 years ago. I'm not sure Kansas really translated well into the MTV generation, but I can't deny that they were talented.
This is a really good video, and I've always liked this song better than "Fight Fire with Fire." Too bad there is no bassoon heard in the song, especially with all the guest musicians on the previous album.
I remember the first time I heard this song and thought the DJ on the radio got the name of the band wrong when he said it was Kansas. I couldn't believe it. At the time (back in the 80s) I thought, 'Damn, what happened to my band, Kansas?? They sold out to pop. ugh'
But I really do love this song--and a few others that came out in the 80s. But still......
I CAN'T BELEIVE IT!! I saw the first minute of this vid about 25 years ago and until recently never even knew who sang it. I loved the song..even the first minute...THANK GOD I've FINALLY seen the whole thing!!
@neshdeflep I have know Idea why...but this song and Fire with Fire popped into my head a few days ago... I used too have the album. This song brings back lots of memories... 27 years ago????? GOD!!!!! I feel old!
@neshdeflep LOL i seen them in concert when i was 14 and im now 41 and cant believe there is still a vidoe of it out !! by the way they ROCKED at the concert it was awesome!!!!!!!
VH1 couldn't have played Fight Fire with Fire with it came out, as it came out a little more than a year before VH1 debuted. Kansas was a little too heavy for VH1 in its early years. VH1 classic did/does play Kansas videos.
I haven't seen that one in about 25 years. I could never remember what the other video from Drastic Measures was. MTV and VH-1 played Fight Fire With Fire into the ground, but this one I'm sure I only saw like once or twice.
This video ends just like the "Fight Fire With Fire" video! In black and white all the members of Kansas are gathered around the "Star" of the video! One wonders if Elefante stayed around longer if they would have done more like this?
Wow! I finally found this video! I think I have you beat, Louragu! I haven't seen this since '83! I saw it the one time on MTV (yes, I remember when they actually showed videos!) I kept thinking this was a Boston song, so no wonder I couldn't find it for 25 years!! (I wasn't very music-savvy then, I pretty much only knew my G.I. Joes then!:D)
I am an fervent fan of KANSAS. I work in the music industry and i am considered on of the top in my league in the hispanic market. This songs reminds me of when i am with the band on the top 10. Everybody is my friend then. If I change contracts somehow, everyone seems to loose my number. I read you Jhon. Great song. If no one got it, I DO!.
You have no freekin idea how happy I am now that i saw this video.I haven't heard this damn song in 15 years and I Couldn't find the stupid album. Thanks alot for posting this video cause you have just brought back some of the best memories I ever had.People, don't forget your good friends and family cause that's all you got. Thanks
I was an extra in this video when it was shot in LA at Paramount Studios during the '83 tour. I knew John Elefante and I called in sick to work and drove up to LA with my girlfriend. It took 18 hours to shoot at Paramount Studios but it was so much fun. My friend taped over my only copy of this video so I'm thrilled. My 3 kids were surprised to see Mom in a MTV video! Thanks!
THANK YOU JOHNNYKNOWITALL It was December 84 - I was 15, and into this song more than "Fight Fire With Fire". Was also into Queen's "Hammer To Fall" and Jackson Browne's "Tender Is The Night". Took my gf to a hs dance I'll never forget. Thanks man.
This is a great hard to find video, thanks for sharing it. There are so many inside jokes and winks and nods to other Kansas videos in here, funny stuff.

Great song, but it really doesn't sound like KANSAS. I still bought the record, though. I believe the lead singer is Neil Elefant.

This song sounds a lot like a Cheap Trick song to me, from that same time period, especially with the backing vocals.
