it must have aired a long time ago, because in the beginning with Conanns show on NBC, his ratings were horrible and he thought he'd be fired, hence the farewell party....thankfully things changed for him

Conan appeals to a younger crowd. He's not witty like Letterman and Carlin, and not imaginatively neurotic like Woody Allen and Larry David. Conan is mainstream whitebread like Leno.

First, Letterman will never be close to the talent Carlin was. Conan is definately more witty than Letterman, hands down. Woody Allen is overrated...now. Larry David is a genious, though. Leno is just pure trash, especially without his writers.

conan o'brien is the epitome of class - a living genius in the craft of comedy. he navigated this show well early in his career. howard and his goons are trying to get a rise out of him; he isn't affected. to jan: how can you mention leno in the same breath as carlin? seriously? carlin aside(maybe), none of the comedians you reference hold a candle to conan o'brien. would you really regard Steven Wright's talents as recondite? are you sure that's the word you were looking for?

Although Conan was a great writer on "The Simpsons," his TV show was never funny. Even here Howard is talking about Conan's possible replacement. God knows how he got the tonight show!? Imagine Norm Macdonald as the Tonight Show MC!

Yeah, it's a matter of opinion, true. But I never thought Johnny Carson was funny either. Conan O'Brien isn't a "comedian's comedian," whereas people like Steven Wright, George Carlin, and Leno are. Conan appeals to the uneducated high school/frat house set, I think; but he is smarter than he appears to be. Even Andy Richter always had the best lines on the early shows.

By "comedian's comedian" I assume that you mean someone who is consistently touring their stand-up material. Conan got his job under strange circumstances, I agree. But why is it that when Conan appeared on Leno and vice versa, Conan blew Leno out of the water? He is the superior comedian. Leno always does the most obvious joke possible. And his delivery is always the same. Leno is for people who are unfamiliar with well-crafted humor. BTW George Carlin was the best comedian of all time.

The term "comedian's comedian" refers to someone who is so clever, and recondite, that he is appreciated mainly by people in the business, i.e. a unique talent. Conan is middle-brow, run of the mill - like Johnny Carson without the wit. Can you seriously compare him to NBC-era David Letterman? Conan is a smart guy, but his talents are better served as a writer than as a host or presenter. His nervousness and insecurity are give-aways that he know this.

He is far better than Carson (with more wit) and he's better than letterman. His nervousness and insecurities are exactly what make him the best. He's a better writer and host and to top it off he is even too humble to recognize how good he is. Subjectivity aside, you could not be more wrong about his talent. P.S. Conan is highly respected within the stand-up community.
