Putting the priest into the deathstill alive reminds me of when Imhotep is buried alive and scarab beetles are poured over him...yikes. Couldn't they at least do the poor guy the mercy of slitting his throat instead of slowly draining his bodily fluids?
I dont understand how the actress that plays Mohiam could do such a terrible acting in the Dune miniseries and then afterwards make such a brilliant character in COD. (although in the book Gaius Helen Mohiam is described as a much older woman). The scene where she sees Stilgar with the knife and realises she is gonna die (plus the stunning music) just makes my fantasy fly up into the sky.
@Frunkenstein Yes poor Edric. He is my favorite Dune character and really he did not deserve to die, all he did was try to prevent the Guild from being slaves to the Emperor.
Hum...Guild-fish, if I where a Spacing Guild Navigator I would want a bumper sticker on my tank which said. I am NOT a goldfish. :P
Ok. I have never seen this series, even though I mean to. But what is the water webbed creature called that they kill in this video? It is eluding me all over the internet.
@FailaTelcontar He is Edric a second stage Spacing Guild Navigator. Here is how space travel works in Dune, they sort of have a system similar to jumping from Battlestar Gallactica, but they do not have guideposts and computers which is a problem because the ship can end up inside a star or in the middle of nowhere. Navigators are mutated human beings with enormous psychic powers who then can sense a safe path for the ships. Edric is not in water, he is floating in spice gas.
This is one of my favorite parts in the whole movie...The music is beautiful its always been a favorite...Chakobsa is the language that is use..Chakobsa is the language the Fremen use in the books....
according to the author, the language was base on the roma language, which is a GYPSY base laguage!! i thought it was arabic at first but its not....very awesome music! very nice.
i am a big fan of dune and own alot of the books!!!
This scene is most captivating. It gives you wonder, sadness, desire, love...all at once. And even though the movie was great period, something says that even without a plot, this scene alone speaks louder than any other in the Dune trilogy. Deuces Frank Herbert for the scene of the lifetime.
@elleas0222 Actually this scene do not happen in the books, or rather it dos but it is never described. Mohaim, and Edric is killed but their deaths is only mentioned in passing, Korba's execution is mentioned but just in passing, very little is written from Irulan and Alia's perspective. Chani is dead by the time Paul get to her, she never get to say the beautiful final words she says in the miniseries. "Nothing in this universe is greater than my love for you."
@Venefica82 *mouth drops* Well i think they did a wonderful job in incorporating that into the movie. I think many of the fans of Children of Dune would have been really upset *myself included* if Paul would have made it there and she was already dead. I'm glad that she told him that and he was able to hear and see her for the last time. I thought I was beautiful how in the movie, when she died is when he lost his ability to see. It was as if their love allowed him to see until that point.
@elleas0222 I agree I am very glad they added in Chani's last words, it is a very beautiful scene. I think it would have been a nice addition to the book, however Dune Messiah is very short. There do exist however several scenes in various short story compilations that where not included in the book itself, some of those is very nice and give additional detail.
The reason why Paul can see without eyes is that he is so prescient he sees everything that is going to happen, but that change...
@Venefica82 when his children are born so they can carry on his task. However I loved it to that in the miniseries he lost his sight when Chani died so that it appeared that he could see because of her love, it was a nice detail.
@Venefica82 I ran out of space on the first one which is probably below this one lol.
...But I kept thinking about how that part when she spoke to him would have read in the book. I was thinking that if I would have read it, I would have cried harder than I did watching that part in the movie =)
Not only is this one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, the imagery of this scene is unbelievably powerful as various plot threads are all brought together. Congratulations to Greg Yatanes (director) and Brian Tyler (Composer) for creating such a powerful scene.
And, yes, this scene makes me cry, too, even after I've watched the miniseries time after time. Absolute Genius! Of course, thanks to Frank Herbert for his vision and ingenuity.
Its an awesome scene, but kudos should also go to Azam Ali, the singer of this piece. It was because of this I found her work and numerous projects and have been a big fan of hers ever since.
I remember the first time I saw this breathtaking, tragically beautiful scene. And the next ten times I saw it, as I quickly pressed the back button and kept it looping for a good half hour. Still brings a tear to my eye.
some people say that the song sort of lingered and was stretched too long but I feel it's just absolutely perfect. my favorite part was when irulan was awake in bed and the camera starts going around her, and then the scene shifts into mohiam dead on the table, the camera movement matching irulan's scene earlier. brilliant!!!
I agree, it's well done and very effective. I like how it ties into the end of the novel: Irulan has denounced her Bene Gesserit teachers, becoming completely loyal to the Atreides heirs, therefore the Sisterhood has lost all influence on Dune (powerfully stated by the body of Mohiam). I also love how Alia accepts what is happening around her, and Mohiam what is about to happen to her. The chimes are a nice touch...somber, grave (!), but strangely uplifting.

Yeah-the Fremen is largely based on Roma, but a lot of terms either are or are argued to be Arabic.
