So far, really fantastic interview. Mark manages to ask interesting questions while keeping the tone "professional". I hope to see some more interesting interviews in the future! Maybe Suda51!?
Mark, I am giving this video a thumbs up and favorite from me just for recommending M.U.S.H.A.! The musical score is one of the best soundtracks on the console. It would be very interesting to see the crowd's reaction if and when the infamous soundtrack was performed at the Video Games Live music show!
Seriously. I'm sure some of those have already been done, though.
Tommy has some good points about game music too. It's also a technological/cultural thing too. MIDI forces the composer to write melodies and be creative, and I've just grown up with Japanese music, so I prefer that to the more orchestral/ambient western stuff.
M.U.S.H.A. is awesome, and I also I have a whole bunch of obscure games that'd love to see featured like the Touhou series, Panzer Dragoon series, Radiant Silvergun, etc...
But I can also understand that, unfortunately, it simply is not viable to have these on VGL. Even though you have to keep it diverse and have some surprises, it still has to appeal to a reasonable part of the audience. Many obscure games have great music, but we can't have it all. It's just the way it is...
... and so, Tommy went on youtube, typed in Musha'ss ost in the search bar, clicked on the link and the synthesized sound he heard before him was so incomprehensible, so immersive and define that he went into a higher state of consciousness and ecstasy.
Tommy Tallarico was never heard of or seen again after that.
@Manjikoa UGH. My least fav music is from the 60s and 70s. Too much hippie music, folk music, disco music, and early metal. I think the 50s and 80s had the best music in history. Fun, fun, fun, music. Not serious. Not angry except for hair metal. Just great music for dancing.
@WebVManReturns Dude, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater revival, Three Dog Nights and the list goes on and on... I guess some of it can be a bit preachy. I can respect that you don't want to be lectured at by your music and yeah... the less said about Disco the better. I just don't see the kind of staying power in 80s music. Don't get me wrong I like some 80s songs, but I think music in the 90s got a lot better, course I like grunge.
The treaty was signed today by European nations, including Belgium, the UK, Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Bulgaria, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
Also not to mention the USA has also signed ACTA.
This has all been done behind our backs in Signed in Japan.
Also, Tommy I think I remember you looking at Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy (one of my favorite PlayStation 2 games and I think it had a great soundtrack) on Judgment Day as a "Buried Treasure". Can't remember much of it sadly, but what did you think of that game's soundtrack?
Games that I haven't heard yet in the video that I'd suggest are the Duke Nukem theme, the Gex: Enter the Gecko menu music and what I consider to be the best piece of video game music ever written, the jet pack level music from Crash Bandicoot 2.
I do not understand why people love the music for Halo and Kingdom Hearts. Final Fantasy, with the exceptions of X-2 and XIII, does have wonderful music, as does Metal Gear Solid and God of War
@Alianger he was saying it can either have really bad music, or really good music, some companies knew how to make good Genesis music while others didn't, games like Sonic, Streets of Rage, Super Hang on, Toejam and Earl have great music, but games like Road Rash, X-Men, and Toy Story... not so much
@bobopatchigglerrulez Sure and that I do agree with. What bothers me is to see him perpetuating the view that the Genesis in particular had some of the worst sounding tracks, as if there was something inherently wrong with it and devs had to somehow overcome this to make it sound good. You never hear someone mention the NES when on the subject of bad sound. He then goes on to make fun of Cosmic Carnage which is actually a good example of the sound chip capabilities.
Yes! Musha is another example of the YM2612 used right. I can think of a ton of Genesis games with great music. Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, the Thunderforce series (especially IV), Streets of Rage, Sonic of course, Battle Mania Daiginjou, Devilish, Midnight Resistance, Verytex, Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III, Vapor Trail, Golden Axe, the list just goes on and on.
@XBladenoJutsu The Genesis was superior to the SNES in every way. It was designed to be a home arcade machine. The YM2612 worked in conjunction with it's programmable sound generator.
@Luigi84289 I know this already. I also know about most of the specs of the old consoles, especially the NES, Genesis and SNES because I make NES and Genesis chiptunes, and you really learn alot about them that way.
Subterrania for the Genesis. Great music! :)

Just to add to this list:
-Deus Ex: GOTY.
-Crusader: No Remorse/No Regret.
-Lufia series.
-Strider.
-Shin Megami Tensei.
-Romancing Saga.
-I agree with Ys.
Seriously. I'm sure some of those have already been done, though.

Just about anything by Tim Follin, Dave Wise, Yuzo, or Tommy would be fine by me.
The Super Bomberman games on the SNES were pretty "zanny" too.
Serious question (shhhhh!) Hey Tommy, how about some Neo-Geo music?
I'd love to hear the Metal Slug 1 ending theme/reprise with an orchestra!
Of course if you do this you MUST start it with the familiar NEO-GEO jingle. :)
