@sonofazazel i would have too.. accept i would have been stuck in the rubble because of the fact that we fire people for class A's on equipment lol, i bet they pointed that out haha and fired him for not having it on even though it saved his ass lol
you fireddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd and no compensation for you ahahahahaha
I work for Home Depot and this isn't even close to Home Depot. I don't even think this is a DC. Racking for HD is the same everywhere and it's not even close in this video! The driver should have slowed his ass down but I give him credit for hauling ass away from the fall.....
i install this rack for a living. and the only possible way for that to happen is if the feet on those uprights were not anchored to the ground. thats the only option. each beam level can support over a ton of weight. this guy wasnt that smart but. it was not his fault
its not the operators fault if only those shelving units were built the right way.,the shelving should be able to stand a certain amount of force by code., if i was this man,''lawsuit'' for improper building storage shelf code violation''.
and how can the high-rack be crushed this fast by such a little contact? is there to much weight stacked into it? was it damaged before? how about the freight lying in the way making it nearly impossible to pass without hitting something? i saw forklifts weighing about 6-7 tons crashing into nearly the same high-racks much more aggressive at work and they did not really damage it (but there wasnt that much heavy freight in it). i feel really sad for the forklift operator to be that unlucky :/
i'd say it had to do with the speed and the fact that he did not stop AT ALL when he hit the beam. Even with little contact you'll see those beams dent like nothing.
how can a seatbelt save somebody in a situation like that? its just luck not to get hit by something no matter if hes inside or outside the forklift. how about wearing a seatbelt if you have to pop it off and on every 2mins to get off and on the forklift to do your job? how many of you "specialists" were in situations were thing fell out the high rack on you? how about things like "poles" to safe that rack from getting hit by a forklift weighing several tons?
Also looking at how quick he got out of the forklift there is no way he was wearing his seatbelt. A HUGE mistake and another terminable offense in its own!
@shamrock17100 . 'leaning away from the impact' refers to a tipping forklift. I've seen my share of mangled overhead guards . You likely right about dude not having his belt on but most operators are very fast at popping that belt button without even looking . I'm sure there is a good ton of stuff piled on the seat where he would have been . I'd happily be alive to take the write-up for no seat belt and the accident over maimed in the seat.
I used to work at Lowe's and only had an order picker license but even I know that you absolutely do not get out of the forklift. DJKURSE1 is spot on, you NEVER get out of the forklift you stay buckled in and you lean away from the impact. That guy is damn lucky he didn't get hit with a beam or any debris. I know with a reach truck he could have at least lifted the forks and possibly have cleared but you don't use that for the material he was moving. He probably is out of a job though.
dam that was crazy it wasn't the forklift operator, but the store and the contractors who set up these bays fault. i do resets and set up depots and i always see forklift drivers hitting uprights and beams but i could bet that who ever set up this particular store didn't even anchor down the uprights. if i was that forklift driver i would sue the depot for putting me in unsafe and hazardous work conditions ;)
OSHA would have been all over this place like Batman on the Joker long before this happened. The place looked almost the same after the fall as it did before.
damn! YOU DO NOT GET OUT OF THE FORKLIFT. You stay in there, did you see how quickly he got out of there; he was not even buckled in. Even in the event te forklift tips you brace and lean away from the impact, it evens says it on the forklift. Good thing he appeared to be OK in the vid. Our racks here are not that high, in some places 4 shelves and that's it....
this def aint a store i wrk at home depot those racks r 2 high its prob a distribution center...nd he could have jus lifted that load up so it would clear those stacks he got wut he deserved
It isn't a home depot. Home depot doesn't have bulk aggregate bags (the sacks on those pallets). Home depot has fully boxed shelves. These are clearly not. Home depot doesn't have 55 gallon drums of anything. If it were a home depot store or dc the same thing would happen with the shelf but it wouldn't cascade like this one did. All shelf supports are bolted together unlike these. It would stop after a few fall. The racks can be 20' tall in the HD. Color is orange, tan and white. No others.
This is a home depot P5 store. This was more than likely here and I'd be willing to bet that this moron was new to the fork lift. I drive forklift and I would've raised to the load above the 5gallon buckets for clearance. Oh well, clearance sale I guess!!!
That's looks suspicious as hell. I've installed many of these type of storage racks and never in my entire life have I seen these racks fall apart like that so quickly. What the hell did they store on the shelves, automobiles?!?!
Definitely not Home depot. Shelving is too tall and light duty. The shelving at HD is strong. I have personally knocked into it with harder stuff than wood and at a higher speed and anything has yet to collapse.
@daddioofthree Depot handbook states that you "ride it out" if you're on that type of machine. If you're on a reach truck, then you're supposed to run. I must say I'd rather have my seatbelt on in case of a tipover, instead of off in fear of something like this happening.
lol ya'll are stupid...I work for Home depot and this is NOT a home depot where this happened at. just cuz it's orange shelving doesn't make it home depot.....I had a meeting today and this was brought up because everyone kept saying it was a home depot, but everyone confirmed it wasn't.
I work for Home Depot and this is not a Home Depot. Not even close to being Home Depot. Very Scary though. I operate a forklift everyday at Home Depot. This is a eye opening video.

He got off that lift truck awfully fast like he had either done this or saw this happen before. BTW if this did happen in Canada there probably isn't such a thing as an OSHA there because outside of maybe lost work time there are no medical expenses to dish out (it all comes from taxes) therefore probably no huge liability suits to contend with.

Hmm...those shelves can take a shitload of abuse. When we hit them at Lowes, we usually only have to replace one beam or upright. If they fell down like that (not to mention the 2nd row over also coming down) then someone was negligent in maintenance as well as the driving.
The way that place is laid out it looks more like a distribution warehouse for surrounding home depots, not the actual retail warehouse, funny as hell though.
Hope that forklift operator sued for endangerment. Those shelves should never have collapsed from such a minor bump. They were clearly inadquate for how they were employed.
if that was a sales floor of homedepot god that store is in need of a cleaning look at all that shit i work at lowes even if that reciving it was a mess they would have my ass at lowes for a department that dirty
Regardless if it's his fault or not, that place is one mass suicide event waiting to happen! I mean, knocking one leg causing nearly half of the warehouse to collapse is just ridiculous.
Had the driver lifted the lumber he was carrying higher than the black barrels, he could have squeezed through there with no prob. Those racks did look precariously high though...
