the real reason the yamato sank is because she took 12 torpedoes in the aft and port valve and flooded in the bow's watertight compartments, she had a complex counter weighing and balancing system which pumped seawater or fuel into compartments or containers in the opposite side of the ship which slowed down the sinking but we all know it wouldn't last.

#1 Bombers don't drop bombs on the hull they drop bombs on the DECK. The Deck of the Yamato was made of Wood Planks not Steel Armor.
#2 Ship Armor is designed to take impacts from the OUTSIDE, not the inside.
#3 The Yamato's design Specs don't take into account the corners that were cut in her construction.

All the Japanese navy's ships, that survived the war were dismantled, including types that we didn't know they built. For example, they also built the world's largest submarine, and only carrier-sub ever. Testament to their naval innovation, even at the time.

Otherwise, they would have certainly been scrapped after the war or even used as targets for atomic bomb tests. Even the Mikasa, a famous Japanese pre-dreadnought, only survived because it was in such bad shape after WW2 the Russians considered it all but destroyed anyway. Fortunately, the near wreck was refurbished and is now on display.
