@jvlivs2 I was a waiter too and in my opinion it wasn't as bad as you made it out to be... did you act like the waitress in the scene? I think probably that's why everyone seemed like a jackass to you when all they wanted was some wheat toast. lol.
@mamakunem Naw, I was one of the cooks at the last restaurant I worked in. I was pretty much 'behind the scenes' on that note. Nothing wrong with the business, but it's the PEOPLE that I had an issue with. But that's just me.
yep, typical hippy era anti-social behavior....the me, me, me generation. Rip off "the man" any way you can....."Abby Hoffman,Steal this Book".....OH by the way....I LOVE THIS MOVIE
"ATTITUDE".....thats what makes him a "hippy".....self centered, "me generation" everything has to be a "revolution" and anti social.....even ordering toast is a "protest" to him.
Actually....yes you are right....all restaurants will give you a side order of anything, basically. BUT....the writer wanted to show the audience how he (Nicholson's character) turns everything into a protest....he is "anti-establishment"....and looks for any way to express it.....a way of saying..."I don't want to live by YOUR rules. If I were that waitress I would give him the toast only "after" I have shoved the bread into the crack of my ass first.....then smile as I serve it to him.
to MaxwellsAttourney: well...i'm glad someone agrees with me. For some reason no one else seems to see it. I grew up in this era.....I know it all too well....and remember how all the hippy kids of rich parents just thought this scene was great.....but they thought it was great for all the wrong reasons. It's great because of Nicholsons acting....but the concept of giving a hard time to a lady that has to be on her feet 8 hours a day pisses me off
Miss Black + Mr Nicholson = perfection! I wish the whole movie was here to add to my karen Black Playlist :(
thanks for this scene! xoxo

whitebread8381 1 year ago 2
@whitebread8381 Yeah, that's why I quit that business about a decade ago. Made good money, but dealt with jackasses every day, ALL day! It sucked.

all he wants is toast. regardless of his character, how does that make him a hippy?

Haha it totally is a protest, you're right...
But the inability to order a side of toast, is a retarded policy.

Yeah I'm only 21, but, I'm a fan of this movie, and Nicholson in general. The scene is exposing hippy culture, not praising it.
