I really wish I was this age back in the 70 and 80s... the racing was so much more amazing! 5Ls, 2L,s rotaries, all flavours of car. What amazing racing
A very different era that produced some truly tough and fearless characters.
Production car racing was a real key to the nostalgia these cars created. "My Uncle/Dad used to have one of them.." was an often spoken phrase.
These cars gained advantages via the use of the hands & minds of some truly talented mechanics, drivers and crews & simply cannot compare to the sterile science of plugging a computer into the motor.
Old school mechanics LISTENED to these beautiful machines.
is there anymore of this race, i remember watching it live as a 7yr old kid on the telly at my grans house and then getting upset after knowing that it was that last race of the year on telly till march the following year and i hadnt missed a year of watching Bathurst since '77 till '07 only last year i really missed it because of now living in europe, where on ch7 they say they show it really its a load of rubbish as its not on telly here
they should have closed bathurst just for track..alot of people might not agree but i think they have ruined the heart of bathurst by letting people build all over the race track
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
how can that V nonce even think he can out drag that Jagfag , I mean 600 donkeys ooze out of his trarsers FFS. Get onnit or leave the party hearty , the big boys wanna outlive their oversize engine tourqers , u knows it.
They still stopped pretty well actually, they could run 4 piston calipers on them. They were restricted to running the production disc diameter and pad size.
wanna know somthing ironic..every driver that has been killed in the Holden v Ford battle have been driving a Holden..the 1984 crash that killed mike he was driving a VK Group A SS..his crash is the reason why the chase was built..so its not how would u be pulling up a falcon its how the hell would you stop a holden crashing...simple answer...create the chase
It was wild and wooly in those days.. Minimal safety barriers, V8's charging past 4cyls at twice the speed, privateers who raced once a year. What an era compared to todays sanitised racing.
I actually think bathurst was much much better in those days, not just the Holden Vs Ford that we see today, dont get me wrong i enjoy V8 Supercars but bathurst these days is not half the race it once was.
Peter Williamson was the only driver willing to put a camera in his car as it weighed so much back then... They had to remove the passenger seat to mount the camera in the car. The potential winners of the race were too scared to put one in as it may slow them down. I remember the helicopter having to follow the car around the track and across the top of them mountain so they could broadcast the weak signal.
Australia claimed to be the leaders in race cam technology and that was great technology back then... Everyone raved about it... but yes, some people may now say, What is a celica, also the first Williamson celica was the Chickadee's celica and it was yellow...
Amen ninja1911.... What wanker named the new V8 touringcars driven by the sons of rich daddys supercars? Oh for those good old days again but ofcourse it's only a dream. Also I'd love to see the REAL Conrod straight again with no Caltex chasebut alas I won't!
I remember that race - the Celica was dubbed 'Kermit' - green Celica. Aussies pioneered in car footage & for years after were always the first with new improvements
Production cars are no good, they had a gtp series but it was a flop, too slow and boring. The group c cars back then were all pretty modified and fast
absolutley awesome vid. We do need a racing series where you just get a standard commodore, falcon, camry, magna etc. of the showroom floor and whack a roll cage in em and thrash em around an awesome track like bathurst or another of australia's awesome tracks.
Damn! That onboard cam in the Celica with a stock dash reminds me of a trip to the supermarket with my mum in the late 70s! Great vid. What an interesting race it was back in the day with such a variety of cars competing.
What a brilliant, timely video! Love the solitary "racecam". I'm guessing that's the original one. Also love the full dash in the celica with the air vent! And a 2:29 first lap from a standing start from Brocky in the torana ain't to bad either, even without the chase! Love Bathurst, the cars have advanced a little, there's less cows, trees and houses, but besides that, not much has changed in 27 years. Great vid.

@dmxtreme1978 We need Chrysler to race a V8 Magna and may be even Toyota race a V8 sedan, that's what we need.'

1:54 Tony Packard Holden. "Up the Windsor Road from Baulkham Hills .... and let me do it right for you". That was before his jail term.

This was also when Conrod straight went from Forrest Elbow to Hell corner without that crappy Caltex Chase that killed it.

Yeah, I remember watching it that year. Willow's little Celica did ok.
Only milk and juice comes in two litres, but anyone who buys five litres of anything wastes at least three! :)

don't they sound fucking grunty though compared to the V8SCs of today, i'm sick of hearing about peter fucking williamson!

Why the fuck is the camera on some puncy 2.0 Litre N/A corolla instead of a beast 5.0 Torana / Falcon Cobra 351!?!?!?!?!? I demand a recount.
