@llewesa100 I was alwas fond of cassettes but I could only play them on this crappy mono tape deck and the sound was much better once I picked up a stereo deck instead. I KNEW some limiting/compression was going to be applied to the Stereo versions of these albums! And I like stereo better, actually, just hearing things left or right only as they did back then. But even only a few dB, as the remastering crew stated in the interviews, is a concession to the "louder is better" mentality of the past 10 years, and a deal-breaker for me as far as buying the stereo re-releases is concerned. They just won't sound like they did in 1968. :(
i'll admit it to all of the shitty pop and club rap songs that are out there that are clearly made just to make a quick buck or to shake a girls ass but there is such thing as intelligence when it comes to hip hop. not rap, hip hop. i mean hell, it's pretty obvious that there was more thought put into music that public enemy and run dmc made than motley crue and kiss ever produced. case and poin: "Rattle snake shake."
jay-z uses a live band too and who gives a fuck if the rappers don't bother to keep up with their lyrics. all musicians do that shit, not just rappers. and besides, the good rap like outkast and a tribe called quest have more substance than those fucking shitty ass "rock" bands that i hear on the shitty ass radio.
wtf do you even mean when you say "urban people?" if you're talking solely about black people, you are just ignorant when it even comes to rock music.
besides, just because rap music samples, it doesn't mean it can't be creative when it comes to that. you make it seem like most rap samples an obvious loop from other genres of music and call it a day which is not the case...most of the time at least.
that is one of the most stupid and ignorant comments i've ever read. rap is not music? oh so drums aren't the backbone of music? you're saying that the instruments that people use to record rap songs aren't a part of music? like electric guitars? like keyboards and pianos? LIKE FUCKING SAXAPHONES!!!
saying that rap isn't music is like saying the horror genre is movies. it's like saying memoirs aren't books. it's stupid.
Umm actually it isn't music. It is just a beat. Thats all, music is when you take TALENT and use it. Instead of presses a button and then talking about your day.
you seem to not understand wtf i'm saying. rap actually does use live instruments so to say that rap isn't music when in fact it does use tools that actually play music, is just fucking ignorant. now when it comes to talent, and i know it's hard to notice with all the bullshit music that's out today, but in order to become any good at rapping or any other form of music, YOU NEED FUCKING TALENT i can understand if you don't like rap but to say it isn't music even when it has the elements, is dumb
"Avant-garde music is a term used to characterize music which is thought to be ahead of its time, i.e. containing innovative elements or fusing different genres."
John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "unfinished music" albums aren't what I'd call avant-garde, but random noise and I don't even want to touch them after a minute's worth of listening.
You think Jay-Z is smarter than all of the Beatles combined? I don't think Jay-Z is smarter than either of em individually. I can't believe he did a cover of Forever Young. WTF
@kingstillballin Brighter than The Beatles? What he throws some beats together and sings some random shit. How does that make him more bright than The Beatles? Have you heard Abbey Road, The White Album Sgt. Pepper, Revolver, Rubber Soul etc. etc.?
generally speaking i don't think that mono sound can be better than stereo. the reason why the beatles and other bands from that time, released their albums in mono as well, is mainly because most of their listeners-teenagers and youngsters mostly- did not own stereo equipment and played their records in more or less, low fidelity mono record players.
What's shit about the stereo versions are that the Beatles themselves didn't mix them, it was EMI engineers (or some engineers) after the mono masters were made. Therefore, you have dumb stuff like bass and drums in one speaker, and guitars and vocals in the other, which usually makes the songs sound unbalanced and altogether off. Plus, some of the mono versions are simply mixed differently, so there are essentially two versions (stereo and mono) of certain songs.
mcCARTNEY once said that they themselves-the beatles- didn't know much about sound recording especially during their first years so the mixing was always done by emi engineers whether stereo or mono. as far as i am concerned it is the clarity of sound that counts. if i can hear every instrument and voice clearly, extreme panneling doesn't really bother me. all you have to do is sit in the right position between the speakers and everything is just fine.
now, excuse me for saying this, but honestly i don't really understand this
MONO-BEATLES-MANIA. maybe the remasters of the early albums -before HELP- sound just as good or even better in mono, since the extreme paneling of the stereo mixes might put off some people. i don't think that the same applies to the rest of the albums and i don't see why someone would rather listen to the mono version of Sgt Peppers instead of the one in stereo.
Not only the "panneling" as you said, but they are completely different mixes. Hear the "Got to Get you..." in the revolver mono, and you´ll see, for instance, and look for the other songs. If the deal is just "pannelling" the mixes, make sure that I´ve prefer the Stereo ones.
Some people just prefur the mono versions of albums. Sgt. Peppers does sound different in mono. To say getting The Beatles in mono is mandatory is an overstatement.
Pepper and Revolver sound different in MONO. They sound best in mono in my opinion. However, there is nothing wrong with the stereo version of the albums.
I don't see why John Lennon, George Martin and others would say people haven't heard "Sgt. Pepper's..." until they've heard the mono version, and I don't see why George Harrison would be very disappointed years later when he first heard the stereo version.
No, not even new stereo remixes with all of the effects that The Beatles put into their mono versions would have the spirit of the original mono's.
And stop complaining. I hate it how bands like The Beatles and the 13th Floor Elevators have long needed good remasters for decades, and when they finally come out people talk about the labels milking money.
The only huge mistake Apple Corps. made was not releasing the mono versions separately and calling them "collector's" items.
i am not complaining really...i am just wondering why they didn't do this years ago. i'm sure it could be done. it's been 10 years since the yellow submarine songtrack was released with every song not simply remastered but also remixed, with amazing resaults. why did it take so long for the new remasters?
as for the mono versions the only ones i've heard were a few from vynil, and the early albums released on cds by emi. i liked neither. i haven't heard the new mono remasters.
2. anyway i have also several usa and canadian stereo versions of the early albums on cds and compared to what emi had released before the new remasters, sound much better. i'm talking always about the before HELP albums. the rest of the emi cd releases, sounded just fine to me on cd.
I also have been wondering for quite a long while why Apple Corps. didn't do the same. What counts is that they did it now, and they did a wonderful job with it. The only mistake, as I said below, being the marketing of the mono versions as exclusive "collector's" versions only available in a box set, when they are the definitive versions.
Remixing the WHOLE ENTIRE CATALOGUE would ruin the magic of the original mono mixes with which The Beatles were involved.
Yeah, making the mono mixes of these albums collectors versions was a dumb move. Considering that The Beatles wanted the mono to be defentive mix for fans to hear.
I agree. Making the mono set only limited edition was a dumb move on their part, but EMI I believe made that descion. Apple was just in charge of the project. But I read somewhere that confirmed that they are making more Mono box sets because they are basically being forced to because of increased demand from store chains and amazon. They are simply sold out and keep receiving more and more orders. It would be stupid if they stop making them, and it would look terrible on their part.
I have not heard many Beatles songs in MONO. I must say the early stuff sounds better in MONO. All Beatles albums after Revolver sound best in stereo.Just a personal preference. I have Times They are a Changing on a mono vinyl record. It sounds better that way.
"Sgt. Pepper..." sounds better in mono, too. After that, stereo is more definitive. John Lennon, George Martin (the producer) and others involved have said that people haven't heard "Sgt. Pepper..." until they've heard it in mono.
George Harrison, when he first heard the album in stereo years later, was disappointed and surprised.
How do u feel about Magical Mystery Tour in stereo? Strawberry Fields has some guitar strings at the end you can't hear in mono. I can't wait to listen to the remasters on my cousin's sound system to really tell the difference
@TheOneartist Well thats true, you really haven't heard Pepper until you've listened to it in Mono because there are things on it that you just don't hear on Stereo. Mind you I perfer the Stereo mix of it myself.
In all honesty, I'd say that "The Beatles (White Album)" is more definitive in stereo. The mono version of "Helter Skelter" has a minute missing from it, and "Revolution 9" is a fold-down from stereo. The stereo doesn't sound awkward at all to my ears.
In any case, the mono is still a good alternative mix to have. And all of the albums before "Magical Mystery Tour" are a MUST in mono.
Yeah, I forgot to mention "Revolution 1" until I typed the comment. Besides Wikipedia, though, I remember visiting a site that said some of the other songs were fold-downs as well, like "I Will".
Don't remember where it was, though. It did give specific information about takes and mixes, though, so it might as well be true.
Revolution 9 is the only Beatles track I don't give a flying f*** about. They could remix it, edit it, remove or add minutes, etc. It's painful to listen to in it's entirety.
I hate how Yoko felt the need to pressure Martin into keeping the track in The Beatles (White Album). She shouldn't have had any say in the matter, in my opinion.
It is sort of a painful track to listen to. I love the intro, but when the blaring horns kick in, that's where it starts becoming hard to listen to. It definitely isn't perfect.
They should have released "Revolution 1, Take 20" instead. It's an extended version of "Revolution 1" with avant-garde effects and is definitely a lot more listenable. You can find it on YouTube.
I got the stereo set and although everything is clear I really am not enjoying them at all-the drums are so obtrusive, they ruin the song-eq'd to fuck-you can't apply 2009 principals to 40 year old 4 track redcordings! reminds me of Lucas fucking up star wars-the mono mixes are def the ones to get-they are what the band agreed on after all.
The Mono Box Set will be such a collectors item years from now. A Best Buy here in Vegas said they got only 3 sets and the other Best Buys in town got only 1 a piece. Between Amazon and the retailers selling out so quickly, forget ever owning one if you don't already...amazing album made even more amazing by the mono mixes!
They're making more. The Beatles U.S. store mentions that they should be back in stock on the 4th of October, as well as the stereo. You can preorder them right now, though.
It looks like they're still in stock in the U.K., but that's not too surprising, since it'd make sense they'd press more there, The Beatles being a British band.
haha I need to finish this freakin huge White Album first :(, plus I got school tomo and Beatles: Rcok Band on Wednesday aha but I'll try to upload Magical Mystery Tour by Wednesday :)

Mind you I perfer the Stereo mix of it myself.

i prefer stereo, but mono is more loving in the sense that it's more beatle-esque.
you can't listen to the pre-Rubber Soul albums in stereo.

And all of the albums before "Magical Mystery Tour" are a MUST in mono.

revolution 1 is also a fold down

Yeah, I forgot to mention "Revolution 1" until I typed the comment. Besides Wikipedia, though, I remember visiting a site that said some of the other songs were fold-downs as well, like "I Will".
Don't remember where it was, though. It did give specific information about takes and mixes, though, so it might as well be true.

@TheOneartist Fold downs?
