I just discovered that park a few weeks ago. It's a great place to watch trains!

1st train I counted : 2 Engines, 67 cars, 3 more engines 24 more cars.
2nd train I counted 3 engines, 102 cars.
Some very long trains !

If the mark was HPLX this train was probably headed for the power plant just south of I- 610 close to Fannin

Albeit...either those are new coal cars that are carrying stone or else that's a different train altogether. Either way, those kinds of trains wind up on the siding and park between Beechnut and Bellaire for quite some time.

Yea, I usually expect to see some sort of train parked there most of the time, but I'd never seen one sit for so long before.

There are four reasons I can think of because I, too, have seen many UP coal trains just sit there.
1) Crew change
2) Low priority train
3) NOL-bound train and has to work with Amtrak's schedule
4) Bound for UP yard over at the NE corner of the 610 loop and is waiting so it doesn't tie-u traffic on the UP main heading out.
