  • I enjoyed the video but I think a better way to categorize war games would be based on the military's 3 levels of war which are; Tactical, Operational, and Strategic. The first two you got right on but Strategic would be a better and more accurate way of saying "Grand Scale". Just being nit-picky since I'm in the military myself and I've had the 3 levels of war pyramid ingrained into my psyche!

  • Nice pipe Joe hehe.

  • you have titan from AH? I just picked up the original 1982 version on Ebay & new! what a find.

  • Americans don't get DM counters!

  • Very, very good! Thanks Joe!

  • Thanks engdy1!!! I was really looking forward to this breakdown but I was expecting more. I kinda got the differences in terms of definition but what I would have liked is something about what kind of thought goes into trying to win and I think you brought me a good way there engdy1.

  • I'm more a pc gamer myself. Never played many wargames, though I'm a big history buff. I recently got into playing Hearts of Iron 3, a WWII pc strategy game. It's good, and has me interested in wargaming in general. HOI is "grand scale". I'm wondering if there are any pc games like that Advanced Squad Leader, more tactical.

(I'd try board wargaming, but it's intimidating, and idk anyone who does it that could show me the ropes, or play it with me.)

  • @thebigJ1er Yes, there is one PC game very look like ASL, Steel Panthers World At War. Available for free download

  • @thebigJ1er theres combat mission strike force

  • @ofpveteran73

I can't seem to find anything about a "strike" force, just CM Shock Force, and that's modern, which I'm less interested in. I did find what seems to be a new game called CM Battle for Normandy. I tried the demo, but it's complicated as hell! Plus it didn't seem to run very well on my machine :(

  • @thebigJ1er sorry theres also combat mission battle for normandy,Combat Mission: Afrika Korps,Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord,Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin,Combat Mission: Campaigns,Combat Mission: Afghanistan

  • @ofpveteran73

    That's a lotta combat mission!

  • 57 chevy @ 2:07?

  • Hee hee... Hitler / Stalin / Bush... Darn right!

  • i think i like games like grand scale games axis and allies.

  • Just had to add that i'm very familiar with computer strategic war games but never really had any change to play any proper strategic war themed board games. Some of these look insanely interesting and with tons and tons of depth. I think i should try one of those with entertaining solo play campaigns and if i like them maybe i can try and encourage someone to try it out every once in a while. Sad there is no online mode in board games. lol Yeah i know, that was pretty dumb joke.

  • Thanks for this great video. I love all kinds of strategic and tactical war games but it think grand scale seems the one i seem to have most fun with. Very, very good and informative video.

  • your upsesd in this game

  • THX Monsieur for the lesson ;)

  • Outstanding!

are you drying out some mapsheets, Joe?

  • Excellent! Really very good!

  • I never noticed the dryer until someone mentioned it. Awesome vid! I hope you don't mind that I'm putting this video on my facebook page so that I can let you explain wargaming to them for me :-)

  • You are President Bush....

    LOL LOL LOL!!!

    Loved it.

  • it seems to me that table-wargames will not have any future. what i see instead is very large touch screens, where you don't have to worry about wind, spilled booze, angry loosers, lunch break and saving or pausing the game.

  • Tell your wife to turn off the damn dryer if you're going to make a video, Joe. Come on.

  • Thanks a lot Joe, I've been getting more and more interested in wargames lately. This series of videos has helped me a lot in understanding the basics of this kind of games. I think I will go ahead and order Infidel :P

  • Great video & gret collection, Joe

please let us take a walk through your ENTIRE collection, that would be neat !!!

  • The Dice Tower presents: Laundry 101 Part 1

  • That dryer in the background is quite distracting.

  • Great idea Joe.

Always liked the idea of wargames but thus far have never had the opportunity to play one. At least now I'll learn some of the fundamentals.

  • What is that background sounds? a Dryer?

  • Always great video's. . .but dont have the dryer running in the background

  • ...and don't put text over your face.

  • Thanks Joe. I look forward to the next installment. Very well done.

I play a lot of heroScape. Based on your categories that would be a tactical board game. Do you play? Would you even consider it a war game or is it too simple? Have you ever done a review of heroScape? Would you consider it?

    Thanks again.

    Eirikr

  • I see TOTALER KRIEG! Best grand scale wargame I've ever played!

If anyone is looking for some gaming, Kent State in Ohio will have it's game club start meeting in a few weeks. Every Monday night at the student center, 7PM! Look for the Evil Geniuses for a Better Tomorrow.

We are happy to teach games, and have many dice tower classics to play.

  • Wow. Thanks for doing this!! This is one one your better videos. I like the use of close up and "head shot". A bit more text would help.

Can't wait for more...but no surprise tests okay...

  • I really enjoyed this video, I hope you decide to keep the series going.

  • Curiousity here... I used to play battletech, and one of the things that would annoy the crap out of me were keeping track of the character sheets. What wargames exist that don't have those?

  • Most wargames don't have that much detail. But that's a VERY tactical game, so it Car Wars or Star Fleet Battles.

I recommend Ogre, by Steve Jackson games. Each counter is one tank, and the only combat results is disabled or destroyed.

Also Axis and Allies has no details at all on units. One hit kills them. The units have different stats and costs, but there is no tracking.

  • Thanks Joe, this is something I've been wanting. I would love for you to publish a list, or perhaps have three different episodes where you cover the categories and your favorite games in each one.

  • Nice overview. One thing in my mind that separates tactical/operational/strategic is the side concerns: supply for operational, production for strategic.

  • I really like that breakdown. I'm still a wargamer in training, but I found this helpful engdy1.

  • next time turn the tumble dryer off :-)

  • Ya, I caught that half way through. :-)

  • key word is SCALE

    keep em coming joe

  • It surprised me that you never mentioned World in flames. It's one of the most famous grand scale games (outside of more casual games, like Axis & allies).
