  • Awesome, thank you for this LP. Great job.

  • Thank you so much for doing this! I played CB as a kid when it first came out. I believe it cost $50, and it had to last me forever (cause that was a lot of money for a 12-year-old back then). It sure did last forever, because I had no idea what I was doing. I think I spent months trying to get those closets open. Anyhow, I was home sick this week from work, and this helped me forget about my cold. You did a wonderful job!

  • Thanks for the Let's Play. I never got the chance to play this game but I like Laura Bow 2. Great stuff!

  • So Lillian just kills you if you enter that one doorway, take a shower, or walk in the attic for no reason? I can get the attic, maybe....but in the shower?

  • I played this game at a friends house back in 1989 and it all looks so nice and the game still scares me ... thanks for the walkthrough!

  • Great LP! Would have been a great ending if it turned out Laura was the murderer and the diary was actually your's.

  • You forgot to examine the cigar butt with the monocle. When you do it in the game, it says you don't see anything of interest. But you have to do it anyway. If you do, it shows up on the notebook in Items Requiring Close Scrutiny at the end.

  • I came across this LP the other day when I was looking for info on Colonel's Bequest. I then watched the WHOLE THING and the DOAR one, too. You guys are HILARIOUS and it brought back great (and traumatizing) memories. How fun! The comments on every video also provide some great entertainment.

  • There was that dusty bootprint in one of the secret passageways and you saw it, but you did not inspect it with the monacle or whatever so thats what you missted there

  • Awesome work Hercrabbiness!!!, you have talent explaining and playing Sierra games, you have the ability and the patient to teach us the whole game, with sarcastic, humoristic, creepy comments, you should work at a narror of Horror Series, let me thank you once again, this game was one of my favorist games at the 80´s, I was child and you remind me some good sensations seeing this game once again, thanks a lot dear!!!!!!

  • Why did Rudy even go after the colonel after he killed Lillian? I mean I don't know everyone's back story, but you would think that he could just sit quietly and wait for the colonel to die and take all the inheritance. He wouldn't have to split it with anyone, but whatever I guess he wanted to die.

  • @Thatneslper Because Rudy is full of debts so he needed the money immediately.

  • @BlueJoneleth I guess that make sense.

  • What about the magazine?

  • Brilliant LP, loved every bit of it. I know it's an old video but I just subscribed.

  • Thanks for that. I can't play that anymore on my Mac so it was nice to watch you.

  • Items Requiring Close Scruitiny: You already have one of bootprint, that you found outside, next to the rolling pin. There's a second bootprint, next to the broken record, in the music room that you never checked out with your monocle.

  • YAY!!!

lol i beat this game in like 1994.

  • YAY!!!

  • How the hell would sarah find the jewels?

    i mean parents you suck!

    lol

also ...if lilian invited you then wanted to kill everyone....what why...oh

  • I shouldn't be over critical, but this was bad writing if I understand any of the plot. First of all, laura did nothing, if anything she was aiding the murderer by not warning people effectively or stopping a single murder, except the colonel, and he'd have died soon anyway. Also, the murderer couldn't have been lillian. In my opinion, two strong people would have been required to commit all the murders and dispose of the bodies. How did she get the body out of the well alone?

  • I remember playing this game with my family when I was about 7. Thank you so much for posting these videos, they really bring back a ton of fond memories. I remember watching my parents play through it and being so worried about the next body they would stumble upon. I had to close my eyes on a bunch of parts! Thanks again!

  • AWESOME WALKTHROUGH!!! but, I have one question, what was it like for you when you first played the game and figured out the murderer was Lillian? And that the dead bodies were all in the basement?

  • @xTikezgax Thanks! :) To be honest, the first time I played this game I did a really horrible job. So by the time I found out that Lillian had been murdered, I was just kind of bemused and confused. After I played it I looked at a walkthrough, so the bodies in the basement didn't shock me or anything. But when I played through the game for the second time and saw the bodies they still CREEPED me the heck out!

  • @hercrabbiness You did an AWESOME! job on doing all the voices. Especially the Colonel... Are you going to do Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist with LateBlt?

  • Another great LP! I'd forgotten how ridiculous this game was for sleuthing. I couldn't even get through Act 1 of it without a walk-through. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

  • What I never understood is why Laura would take all the murder weapons. What would you say with your fingerprints all over them with all of them in your possession?

  • You have a voice that could calm an angel. I know these posts are over 2 years old, but I just thought you should know that as a recently dumped British man, I found great solace in your wonderfully melodic vocal notes.

I loved this game when I played it (even though I never worked out how to unlock the water nymph), and listening to you share your thoughts about it brought a rare smile to my face.

Thank you young lady. You've made a sad heart beat happiness.

  • Awesome playthrough! In case anyone's wondering, you missed examining the cigar butt. I'm 100% sure.

  • Just watched your review from start to finish, and I loved it! I beat it 100% back when I was 14, but it's good to relive those memories again!

By the way, if you haven't discovered it yet, the item you're missing from the scrutiny list is the cigar butt. I'm 100% sure of it. Thanks for the videos!

  • It's an interesting game, murder mysteries are rare to find these days (as I said in an early comment - Ace Attorney seems to be the only recent one, disregarding budget adventure games), but the pace is really slow, you can get killed off easily and if you miss one clue then you may lose track of what's happening (Then again, I think someone would have to be REALLY dumb to miss the clues about Lillian).

Anyway, a great LP, I really enjoyed it and hope to watch more in future. :-)

  • Rudy would've gotten away with it...if it wasn't for you meddling kids!

  • Gee, Beauregard! I'd say it's time for some of Aunt Celie's Scooby snacks!

  • you forgot to examine the dusty bootprint in the secret room

  • Sweet. Well done! Thanks for posting. I had a great time watching, to the increasing shock and befuddlement of my girlfriend.

  • I know it's going on two years since you did this Let's Play, but this was really outstanding.

I played this game (jeez, 15+ years ago), and It was one of the few Sierra adventures that I played but never finished. Not only was it fun for me to see you play it through, but I really enjoyed your commentary. After watching this (and hearing you on some LateBLT videos) I will certainly be checking out your other videos.

Well done!! (I used *two* exclamation points - so you KNOW I mean it.)

  • At 3:34 The Colonel kinda looks like Dr.Wily

  • I watched it all and you are hilarious and wonderful ok

  • XD your videos are really interesting! Keep them up!!

  • maybe you could look at that dusty bootprint in the passageway with the monocle?

  • Yeah, I think you had to examine the gun with the monacle... And find the Decanter in an another place.

  • This was an awesome lp, I really enjoyed this!! Can't wait to see what you do with LB2

  • Thanks HC for your very long The Colonel's Bequest playthrough, it helped me to enjoy the game and complete it. Just as a hint (this for readers) in order to complete the game to get a Super-Sleuth, you need to do these two things: look at the Cognac Decanter located in the parlor at the beggining of the game (later moved to Fifi's Room) and examine with monocle the Cigar butt in the floor of any of the secret passages of the Mansion at the start of Act IV.

  • Maybe, you have to check the derringer for fingerprints with the monocle. But I'm not sure.

  • Laura's pretty dry-eyed for someone who just had her best friend go crazy, go on a killing spree, and then get killed herself.

Maybe she's just good at quick recoveries.

  • It's weird I always thought Rudy was guilty and framed crazy Lillian.

  • Great work! I just spent my evening watching you play the whole game. And it was a wisely spent time.

Watching people play and comment video games will always be one of my favourite timesinks =P

  • Great game! And great job! :D I didn't get the Super Sleuth rank either, because I forgot to take the crackers and feed the parrot :(

  • HC, you're definitely one of, if not my favourite LP'er around. Hope you continue these, I love them!

...though the good ending does leave me slightly confused. Why was Henri faking his injury? And Rudy's motive for trying to kill Henri seems a bit...strange. Hmmm.

  • He may have not been paralyzed but it may hurt him to walk for to long, after all he had a cane.

  • I think you forgot using the monocle on the bottle of sleep powder in the wastepaper basket.

  • Thanks for this, it was a lot of fun! Can't wait for the second game :)

  • thanks a LOT FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO: I was too impatient to play the game on my own. So I got the whole story Watching alone took me several hours, I love those old plays, so go on !

  • I really enjoyed the way you improved your voice acting throughout the game - which I never played any further than to Act II (I believe) - and now never will play it because I would miss this absolutely marvellous voice acting.

    Thanks so much for posting.

  • hey HC, I miss the laura bow dagger of amon Ra LPs :) hope you get back to them soon!

  • Maybe your supposed to examine the dusty footprint in the secret passage way with the monocle. Great job with this, thank you so much!

  • thanks for doing this :)...this was one of the games I never did play...but it was great to see anyhow

  • Wow, i didn't know about this game and i thought i've played all sierra games T-T Thnx a lot for uploading this videos :D You did a great job reading all the dialogues, it was fun ^^

  • hey so i just saw recently watched your lets play of laura bow and i thought it was great. My boyfriend egger3rd had me watch it one time. I especially like how you did all the voices it was great

  • barely conscious... absent minded... ameteur gumshoe... seasoned PI (starts ticking towards super sleuth) 5 4 3 2 1... (falls just short of the mark) "Seasoned P. I." FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

  • Nice one, can't imagine how i missed this game, i thought i played all sierra games back in the days (it's basically how i learned english).

Anyway, i like your commentaries, it's the right mix of being serious and being goofy

  • Regarding the missing item that requires close scrutiny...I don't want to give it away, so I'll just say it's an item that could belong to more than 1 person. Remember to examine each item you find with the monocle!

  • When I was younger I always thought the Colonel was the killer. So I always got the bad ending and never realized it!

  • I enjoyed it! ^-^

    Muchas gracias! :-)

  • I heard about you from LateBlt with the Quest for glory 2 video. I just want to say you did a very good job makeing your videos. Both you and LateBlt have inspired to start makeing my own LP's. Keep the classics comeing. :D

  • Another sweet LP! I'd never even heard of the Laura Bow games until I happened upon your Let's Plays and watched this one. A very interesting twist on the typical "find stuff/do stuff" graphic adventure genre. More snooping and dialogue-driven tasks. Another super job!!

  • Great LP; I enjoyed it a lot and you read it all so well ^ ^ hope you're able to keep on like you do

  • Kind of reminds me of Clue.

  • The movie or the game?

  • Both

  • I believe it was the insignia on the bottom of the old boot that Lillian was wearing that you could have used the monocle on, I believe... no promises though.

  • Next time, try LOOK AT an item held by each person early in the game. For example, look at cigar while it's being smoked, look at drink while being guzzled, so on. I think you get bonus points for some of those, and I didn't notice you do it in the playthrough.

But as for me, I rate this whole series a maximum 100/100! Absolutely fantastic, I'll start watching your LB2 stuff soon (another of the greatest games ever made).

  • I always thought I never got Super Sleuth because I had this perverted thought I had to "smell Lillian" in the beginning when she applied perfum so I could identify it later in the game.

Looks like I was missing the cigar butt after all :(

  • I'm kinda sad it's over now. :'(

  • What WAS the embarrassing medical history and why DID the Colonel pretend he couldn't walk?

  • LOL awesome narrating.

  • Yaaay! Finished! I had a ton of fun watching them all! Thanks, Laura! ;DDD

  • Thanks for watching, Zoe! I'm glad you enjoyed them, it makes me happy! :D

  • Great job! You were soo close. In the section "ITEMS REQUIRING CLOSE SCRUTINY", you missed the Cigar Butt. Also in the section, "OBJECTS WHICH CHANGED LOCATION", you are missing the Cognac and Decanter.

I'm looking forward to the next Let's Play!

  • This is one of the few old-school Sierra series that I never got around to playing through or even sampling. Thanks for the great narration.

  • I think a lot of Sierra fans missed out on this game... I didn't even get around to it until a year ago. Glad you liked my videos; thanks for watching! :)

  • @hercrabbiness There was that dusty bootprint in one of the secret passageways and you saw it, but you did not inspect it with the monacle or whatever so thats what you missted there

  • I've never been able to reach Super Sleuth. Walkthroughs always said I was missing the cigar, but no matter how many people I showed it to, or how many times I used to monocle on it, it would never show up in my notebook, it was the only thing I was missing.

Either way, great job, I really enjoyed the LP.

  • You need to look at both Colonel's and Clarence's cigars in order to determine the propierty of the cigar butt, later examined with the monocle.

  • I first reached super sleuth back in 2001

  • You miss the Cigar butt as an item of close scrutiny. You either use to monocle or show it as many people as you can :-P

It took me 4 years to reach Super Sleuth

  • Thanks! I'm glad to see that there are still people out there that enjoy Sierra games and other adventure games... they shall not be forgotten!

  • That was a very fun Lets Play. I like it because I tried playing this game years ago, but got frustrated and confused. I don't think I would have made it through, but I enjoyed all the commentary and suprises. Excellent stuff, hercrabbiness! Thanks for making it through the whole thing and sharing the experience with us! :D

  • Glad you liked it! :D

I think this is probably the most frustrating Sierra game I've ever played. But after you play it over and over and over again, it gets better.

  • AW, you were so CLOSE! You'll get it next time.

Nice ending - love how Celie gets the dough in the end. :D

  • I don't think I've EVER gotten the full score without using a walkthrough! But I did get pretty close... maybe next time I'll get lucky!

  • Did you enter the playhouse in one of the earlier acts, before Lillian was in there? I think that gives points as well...

  • I don't think you can enter it before Lillian's there... the game always says it's locked.

I'm pretty sure the points I missed were from not looking closely at the cigar butt and failing to notice the decanter changing location.

  • You can! enter it during act 3, actually lillian is in there, but she's not acting as weird as later in the game; plus you can look at tally marks on the chalkboard, they represent the number of murders, and change from act to act

  • Hmm, I'll have to try that next time I play the game. Thanks!

  • lol good job on the voices. reminds me when i would play them with my brother and do the voices together lol

  • I used to do the same thing with my sister when we were little. It's really fun!

  • Cheers from Spain, sorry for the poor english, and my congratulations on these awesome commented videos playing LB1!! (That's it! All-in-one! Hehehe :P )

I discovered these classic Sierra games by buying the so called "Roberta Williams Anthology" when i was like 10 years younger and I wanted to learn some more funny english too (all of the games were in english but the manual was in spanish)

Well, concerning to the final notes on the game, monocle every print you discover :P see ya ^_^!

  • Wow, Spain? Awesome. :D Thanks for the compliment!

I'm pretty sure now that what I was missing was the cigar and not the footprint, actually. Ah well. Perhaps next time!

  • Just wanted to repeat what everybody else have already said, great LP.

And I have to wonder, did Rudy, before attacking, tell the colonel everything, including his own plot on how he was going to do away with his uncle, or did Henri just deduced it all on the spot?

  • Thank you!

I think Rudy lured Henri up to the attic and told him everything that was going on with in order to distract him, before springing to attack. I'm sure Henri was able to deduce then and there that Rudy wanted to murder him for his money.

But then again, this game *is* rather silly and cliché, so it wouldn't surprise me if Rudy told him his plans either, haha!

  • I thought I posted this before, but I guess it didn't work.

I was going to say that I thought you had to look at the insignia on (dead)Lillian's boot with the monocle.

  • Ha, so it did work, sorry for being repetitive. I can't figure out how to delete one. But I thought of something else. I think you have to look at the bootprint with the monocle and match it to the insignia on Lillian's boot.

  • Great job on all of them! As I said on the LP forums, you were my first watched LP. I'm watching LateBlt's QFG LPs. Looking forward to seeing what you'll do next.

  • I remember you! Thank you for your kind words; it is an honor that I could be someone's first LP. And LateBlt's LPs are very good, so I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

  • I thought I would watch one video just to find out what this game was since I had never heard about it but I ended up watching the whole thing. Really great, I especially liked the voice acting. Could the gun be the last object that needed close scrutiny? Anyways, looking forward to your next LP.

Hmm, I actually cheated and googled the last item, it was the cigar butt. However you did find out who it belonged to so technically that should count. ^^

  • Whaat, the first comment was about that. :S

Damn youtube, it didn´t give the option to look at the comments "on the next page".

  • I'm honored to hear that. :) And I'm glad you liked the voice acting; it was fun for me to try.

I can't believe it was the cigar butt after I had just goofed off with it a few minutes before! Arrgh!

  • Great work hercrabbines, looking forward to your next LP. I think found really funny that on the last scene, Laura, Celie and the Colonel blink always at the same time... very synchronized!

  • Yes, I noticed the blinking... it's like they're all experiencing a zen-like moment of bliss at the same time.

And thank you for your kind words!

  • Thanks! I had a lot of fun doing it, so it makes me happy to see that other people enjoyed it too.

  • Thank you so much! Will definitely keep an eye out for your future LP's!

  • You're welcome! I'm glad you liked my LP. :)

  • Good LP hercrabbiness.

I'm pretty much interested in Sierra games but being to much of a coward i never play Sierra Adventure games.

So that's one of the reasons why i watch Sierra LP's.

But anyway i hope you make many more LP's.

  • Thank you, bokkoo! :)

I know a number of people who like Sierra games but aren't fond of actually playing them because it's so easy to die... so you're not alone.

  • Thank you so much for putting up this LP! It was a treat to watch, esp. since I didn't complete this game when it first came out. Here's hoping you complete a LP of Laura Bow 2as well.

  • Thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed it! :)

  • Even so, great job! I see what you mean now, voice commentary can add SO much more to a Let's Play when it's done well. Take as long as you need before the next LP, I know they take a long time to plan and record... Meanwhile, thanks for the vids!

  • Thank YOU! :D

I've always liked commentary better in LPs; there's more flexibility in the gameplay and, if done correctly, it makes the experience a lot more entertaining.

  • I could be wrong, but I think you may need to look at the insignia on Lillian's boot with the monocle.

  • HUZZAH! You're seasoned!

The other item requiring close scrutiny is, ironically enough, the cigar butt. You showed it to Henri, but forgot to take a close look yourself! =)

And you're right, the other object which changed location is the cognac decanter. Close, but no cigar. :D

    Overkill. Heh.

  • ARE YOU SERIOUS? I thought that if you looked at the cigar butt it would tell you that there was "nothing special." What the heck is the point!?

  • Hmm, I'm not certain, but APPARENTLY, even though you don't get any "special" message for doing so, you're supposed to examine the cigar anyway... I'm pretty sure it's the other item that shows up in the list. I'd test it myself, except I don't currently have a saved game... When I get a chance I might try it, but you can probably do it a lot faster. =)

  • I just tested it. It had absolutely no effect on my score, and it didn't even show up in the notebook. My goodness, this is irksome... >:/

  • Okay, I think I jumped the gun. I've been looking through the entire list of text strings for the game, and the cigar does not appear to be examinable. I can only assume that what you're supposed to do is SHOW the cigar to someone; there are a couple of people (notably Fifi and Lillian) who will confirm that the cigar is Henri's. I'm not certain, but perhaps you're supposed to do this to confirm that the cigar is indeed Henri's, and not Clarence's. That's just my best guess right now, sorry. :(

  • But I already showed it to both Clarence AND Henri for clarification, so it doesn't any sense that you'd have to show it to someone else.

    Maybe my game's just broken..

  • *Shot in the dark* (Lawl)

    What about the gun?
