I prefer the 2008 version. I couldn't even make it to the end with the 1998! I think Tess is displayed properly in the naivety she has in the book, one of the main traits of her character. I just believe her character has been captured by Gemma perfectly whereas in the 1998 version I only saw her as a heartless woman - all the time, from the beginning. It just didn't feel right. Taking the book into consideration, this version shows Tess the way I read about her and imagined her to be like.
I hate Angel Clare; often he seems worse than Alec for hurting Tess so badly and being such a moralising bastard. She's ovvie better than both these men put together and I love that Hardy knows this
She is supposed to be more in a trance. She's definitely not "hypnotized-seeming". Justine Waddell communicated her hypnotized look and actions far more accurately.
I prefer the 2008 version, i think Gemma captures a more fiery nature in Tess than the 1998 version. I love how we really get the sense of strength and passion within Tess. i think without this Tess would have fallen apart. But i just wished she didn't have to die. i think she is one of the best heroines in literature!!!
Why did Tess even marry Alec she didn't need that piece of crap. When Alec rapes Tess he just took advantage of her which his SAD because she is innocent and did nothing wrong execept from the further scene's...
@FloralSilk I agree, Alec is indeed a piece of crap, but from what i gathered in the book she went back because Alec used her family against her and made her feel guilty, and as if it was her only choice to go back to him so that he would take care of her family who she felt responsible for :(
@lnvaderKez I agree with that fact that its a tragedy because in those 'times' life was unfair; she murdered Alec for his own good. thumbs if you agree, also it is kind of weird saying to Angel '' if i die marry my sister'' weird but has a meaning; she loves Angel dearly and dosent want him to go to the wrong ladies hand which is very sweet ;] Thank you for reading my life-killing paragraph of a 2:32 minute clip on youtube
I think both Gemma and Justine are great actresses! But I think Justine acts the Tess I know from Hardy better than Gemma. This scene should be a very intense moment, feelings that can't be expressed, that need to be surpressed. But it's not really Gemma's fault that this scene is cut so short and with those cheesy words, she played the Tess as it was written in the script and does that very well. Blame the script! Though I think she couldn't have played the other Version, that needed Justine!
rachray83 I said I love this version of Tess, only this part from '98 is better, more emotional and longer, but that's just my opinion. I agree with you with the last 2 sentences.
I love this version of Tess, but this part is far more better in 1998. version. This one is too short and the other one is far more emotional. I love Eddie Redmayne as Angel better than Oliver Millburn - not as actor, they're both great actors, but Eddie s more my type of guy:-)
@taty1719 I disagree. The 2008 version of this scene was better. this scene was a little too calm. She says "I hate him" the same way she says the rest fo the lines. To me the 98 version, the actors seem like they are acting like the characters, where in the 2008 version the actors are living the lives of the characters, they became them. The 98 version makes me feel like I'm watching a play
i will never understand why she just does not say "im his creature but if you love me still I will leave with you" and then gee i dont know just walk out of the house? But then it would not be this wonderful sad romatic story that it is....so there you have it. I really like this version - but I also love the 1998 version - they both have good and bad points - so I watch them both :D
what? that was fast lol why did they cut it so short??? it erases all the power of the scene. go see the 1998 version! so much more emotional and less melodramatic...Justine Waddell's acting is much more genuine. It is a wonder of cinematography.
I like Angel more in this version regardless of the fact that he just stood there and did nothing; It takes a lot of courage to shut up when the love of your life's pushing you away though she's also telling you she still loves you but it's just...too late.
Gemma is wonderful here, but the dialogue is too different from the book - "I'm already dead", "Goodbye my love" never passed Tess's lips in the book or in the other two film versions. This scene was cut short, and Eddie Redmayne just stood there looking dumbfounded - it really feels like Gemma did most of the work - and I didn't buy the romance between Tess and Angel in this one.
the 1998 version is far superior. The country side scenes are very realistic.Jason Flemying is the perfect cynical seducer of maids and Oliver Milburn as the pathetic husband. Justine Wadell is Tess incarnate.
There is absolutely no comaparison with the 1998 version of Tess. For me, Justine Waddell portrays her in a way that very few actresses could. I really love the fact that people have been turned on to this story by watching this version, but do yourselves a favour and watch the 1998 version, without bias to this, and cling to the heart of the story. I found this version generally lacked the emotion of the older version, and I think it's because of the lead actress. Justine Waddell IS Tess.
@SassoonOwen I wholeheartedly agree. Especially in this scene, Justine did a tremendous job. Gemma was good, but her Tess is more of a naive and docile country girl and somehow just ends up being a martyr. Justine's on the other hand is a victim, but she never plays the martyr card. She's spirited and has character, and is not so easily submitted. One pities her but at the same time admiring her, if that makes any sense.
I like the 1998 version MUCH better. In that one you can really see that Tess is just completely numb in order to keep herself from feeling her hatred and loathing and grief, though it keeps breaking through. In this one she just seems robotic, like the actress is trying to portray being numb, but can't pull off the complexity of having to feel emotions she's trying not to feel.
I really liked this version, but this scene simply didn't have the power and dynamic of the 1998 version. I don't know, I think the acting was a bit bland, there simply wasn't enough emotion. But other than that, I really liked this version like I said.
@Liana10091989 Nope. The 2008 version of this scene was better. In the 98 version this scene was a little too calm. She says "I hate him" the same way she says the rest fo the lines. @Liana10091989 i prefer this one better. i like how the ticking of the clock stands out at the start and black suits her better i think than the white it the other version...but that my own personal opinion
This is *such* a good scene! Although I'd have to say, the other version of "Tess" had me breathlessly sad as opposed to just mornful with this version. I think it's because the actors sped it up incredibly here...
It's strange how she looks soooooo much nicer with no makeup and her hair messy... she's beautiful, I remember seeing her at the globe in london in Love's Labours Lost and shes lovely!
I also love it when Angel says "Is it my appearence?"> aint NOTHING wrong with his appearance! :D
No strange reason at all... I feel the same as you. Intelligent women need sensitive and intelligent men by our side to share and talk about interesting things...

This version of the film feels more like it came from a book written by one of the Bronte sisters and not Thomas Hardy. The 98 version is way better.
