I saw Stanley two nights ago in a Boston jazz club. During the third song into his set the thought occurred to me that I was probably watching and listening to the most talented human being on the planet. Yet most people don't even know who he is. The best kept secret in music.
Lots of people can play both rhythm and melody at the same time. But nobody does it as good as him. Especially with that technique. And even if he was playing it the normal way with a pick, he'd murder all of us no problem. He's too good...
Saw Stanley Jordan perform in the mid 80's. i think he was opening for Jean Luc-Ponty or Chick Corea at Avery Fisher Hall. The guy's playing just takes your breath away. I'm a metalhead, but still go back to virtuoso guitar masters occasionally to further my appreciation for guitar. No arpeggiated sweeps here. Gotta listen to guys like him, Chet, Al Dimeola, and Holdsworth to really bring your appreciation of guitar to another level.
the idea that anyone wants to say that what he is doing is rubbish would make me question sanity, sounds beautiful, man doesnt neeeeedd a penis extension piano because he has that guitar :)
@spiritofsantanabass For fuck's sake, I'm not saying it's rubbish. I'm just saying I don't like it very much. I don't like Italian opera either, but that's my problem.
@lexo30 Haha, just saw your other... discussion there ;) I'm glad we could end ours on somewhat civil terms at least. I agree it's sometimes a fine line between being derogatory or outright disrespectful and the plain stupid "no criticism allowed". As for me it was really your "sub-standard pianist" comparison that I thought was unfair, but by all means don't stop criticizing just because some fools get worked up by what you say. It's part of the game, and in the end it shows we care ;)
Not bad, but suffers from SJ's usual reliance on the obvious harmonies, and the fact that everyone will be so amazed that someone can play the guitar that way at all, that they'll fail to notice that he's playing something that, if played by the average jazz pianist, we would think definitely sub-standard. Nicer than a lot of his other stuff though.
@Ibucrthis I'm not talking about timbre - although of all guitarists, SJ is the one who most sounds like he's playing piano, because of his playing technique. I'm talking about the fact that everyone gets hypnotised by his technique (OMG HE'S PLAYING TWO THINGS AT ONCE! ON A GUITAR!) but the actual music he plays is often pretty banal. I'm sure I'm not the only person who thinks so.
@lexo30 Banal?... Only in his choice of pieces maybe (and we both know why he picks those). Only in that he's not playing say, a jazz reduction of the Turangalila symphony so *complex* as to make it unrecognizable. But his stuff is hardly what I'd call *BANAL*. Anyway give me a break, you're the one who seems to be only able to focus on his technique. Have no fear, he's not threatening the future of guitar. You can continue to play it the *right* way, and there'll be people to like it still.
@Ibucrthis Jesus. I find I need to remind you that my original comment was, on balance, positive. I don't want everyone to be Derek fucking Bailey. I just think Mr. J is a tad overrated, is all. I thought he was amazing when I was about 12, and now I don't, and it's *only* because I've since listened to a lot braver, weirder, more far-out, more moving players than him: George van Eps, Nels Cline, Bill deArango, yes, even Derek Bailey - hell, even Pat Metheny.
@lexo30 I get your point, I'm not even that big a fan of him (I don't even have a CD - or an mp3! - of him), and still I cannot help but be reminded of that segment in "Manhattan" with the "Academy of the Overrated", in which Keaton's character and her friend offhandedly lump the likes of Mahler, Jung, Fitzgerald and Norman Mailer. Don't fall off the cliff man.
@Ibucrthis As for playing the guitar 'the *right* way', my original comment was about how SJ uses unorthodox technique for...fairly uninteresting ends. But never mind. Forget the whole thing. Let this debate fade back into the general praise for Stanley 'Boring' Jordan. I no longer give a shit.
Someone said "listen to this" a long long time ago back in the 80's. . What I will argue is the masterfully deft talent this person possesses. You can find this level of genius in many genres, along with the same degree of complexity of arrangements. Superb renditions of this nature must be digested with an open mind and an extremely tentative ear to realize the enormity of expertise engaged by the renderer to produce such quality. Extraordinary!
Do any of you ignorant assholes realize what he is doing?
Playing the melody and the lead at the same time, only a couple people can do this in the world, he is a hand of God, he has powers that we just should admire and enjoy, thats why he was put here.
@leafsfourever I wouldn't say only a couple people in the world can do this... that's a gross underestimation. There are whole instruments dedicated to this kind of playing, like Chapman Stick or Warr Guitar. But yes, this guy is incredibly good, and he does it on guitar better than most.
@leafsfourever Some us ignorant assholes are just that......but if you only just been introduced to him....am i still a asshole if I think he's fucking great and motherhumping WOW! :)
@leafsfourever I agree he's a great player, this is obvious, nobody can say the opposite. But I think that if you exclusively train in a certain way which looks unfamiliar to other people, you can quickly grow an "extraordinary" talent (extraordinary meaning that this is not 'typical'), although not everybody would succeed in growing it.
I've seen a couple guitarists doing that, it's always impressive! Maybe you should check Zack Kim, that's kind of the same playing idea.

The thing about this is that it is amazing to watch this guy.. it is like watching a magic trick. That being said it is not my favorite rendition of this song. Though I have always been amazed by SJ - I've never been wild about the way he ultimately sounds.
@UnoEins Classical is far deeper compositionally than Jazz or any other genre but...almost all genre's can be relevant because everybody is different and music is so huge! You miss out on so many incredible artists and what have to say if you just listen to one narrow field.
@retriever7746and2 That is totally wrong. The genre of music has nothing to do with being "deeper compositionally". You can have masterpieces as much in classic, jazz, and even pop. Go listen to Rhapsody in blue, Giant steps, check out some Avishai Cohen. It's not because Classical music has a more "strict" way of composing that it is deeper. Sorry for my english.
@MrRemiCormier Pop? I think you got a bit ahead of yourself there... Pop is well known for simple, catchy pieces, intended for a big market and usually completely concentrated on the commercial aspects of the composition... I do agree that masterpieces can appear in many genres, but modern Pop, RnB and electro music just are not the place to look for them...
@crwnv It depends what you consider a "masterpiece". Yes, pop is well known for simple and catchy pieces, and most of the time intended for a big market and USUALLY concentrated on the commercial aspects. But not ALWAYS. I would like you to go check some Patrick Watson, Radiohead or even Michael Jackson. No, I'm not a big pop fan, I live as a jazz trumpet player. But, I really believe that there are masterpieces in any genre or style
@MrRemiCormier ok, you have a point there - it does all depend on what you call a masterpiece. but i just can't ever find pop that inspiring, like jazz, blues or metal... and you said it yourself, masterpieces don't USUALLY appear in Pop (i admit exceptions might exist, even if i don't see them as such), so the statement still has stands - Pop isn't a place to look for masterpieces... and i'd still like to hear your thoughts on modern RnB and techno? you need those for it to be EVERY genre :)
@crwnv RnB, very easy. Search for Esperanza Spalding on youtube. If you meant rap, then check some Wu Tang Clan, Cypress Hill, Eminem and many others. For techno, I'm not a big techno fan but I have a group of friends here in Montreal they are called Misteur Valaire and you should browse that also, those guys are insane! And I have a couple other friends making electro music and they really are amazing! What I'm saying is, we cant be jazz snobs. There are amazing things in any kind of music!
@MrRemiCormier And, it's when you start opening your mind to all that kind of music that you can really compose and play your own style. I'm not saying to try to appreciate lady gaga or some other shit which is objectively "poor" quality music. But, make your researches, which I have done. I listen to jazz, classic, pop, rock, blues, prog, indie, metal, electro, rap and many other genres and that's what helps me build my own style as a musician (Sorry for my english again)
@MrRemiCormier if this comment was also intended for me, well, i listen to most of r'n'r genres, jazz fusion, most of the jazz genres, a bit of punk, heavy and power metal, blues, classical music, a bit of reggae, and have delved into rap and electro as deep as i could, though it never grew on me.. i do try to look around, but as i said above - if i like something it still doesn't mean it's a masterpiece...
i won't even mention LG and the likes :) and your english is just fine, don't sweat it
@MrRemiCormier you definitely have a different perspective on masterpieces... :) still, i do agree, there's great stuff in all sorts of music, and i do give a chance to anything that might sound good... but i just don't like modern rap and any sort of electro... thanks for the recommendations, though..
but, we did kind of drift away from the topic - great stuff or not, I'm still not sure if most of those could be called masterpieces.. we should have probably defined that first :)
Stanely is just so good, he probably doesnt even know how good he is, but God knows, only God can give a man such gifts, and he has made the almighty proud!!!
Stanley Jordan Makes a melody come to life, with soul and the fingertapping takes you to a new dimension! Over the rainbow and over the top! got to feel it!
Always have such a hard time believing what I'm seeing/hearing with him. I bought "Magic Touch" on a whim at a used record store one time and I've been a Jordan fan ever since. He's incredible.
What if the guy could sing while doing this???My head would explode...LOL..Seriously who looks at a guitar one day for the first time and thinks, hmm, think Ill play this way different?Ive never seen anything like this, guess because there isnt anything like this out there. Thanks for the post, stan is the man.
When I think that people like Justin Bieber and Brittney Spears have hundreds of millions of views and this doesn't even have a million... it makes me lose a little faith in humanity.
@StupidHatMatt i know bro these new artist of today could never live up to the greats like srv clapton hendrix jordan has more talent in his left nut than bieber or spears has in there whole body
@StupidHatMatt: No need to feel bad for Jordan: His first tour sold out everywhere, & because it was just him alone, he immediately became one of the wealthiest musicians in history. This enabled him to virtually turn his back on the show-biz aspects of music & focus on the music itself & therapeutic qualities./ Cpmpare that to best-selling artists like Lady GaGa, who spend so much money on production that they -lose- money on the road.
its not about speed, its not about fancy tricks and flips, not even about the people whomake the music. It's about the music itself and the raw soul and energy that generates from guitarists like this guy.
I know this word is hackneyed and over-used. But I can find no better description: This man has soul. No caps, just statement of fact. I cried. He wears his emotions in the open for all to see. This is the language of music. There's no "who's better" or "who won." Many are proficient at it, but a precious few can tell engaging and dramatic stories that take you with them. Thank you, Stanley.
I wonder why people say this guitarist would kill another guitarist. Being a musician consists of showing your own talent, not comparing it. Yeah Jordan may not be the fastest guitar player around. But he can make a guitar sound like it has a body and mind. So what he goes out of time a bit. You dont look for flaws or weak points, you look for perfection. So on this note all the new guitarist and naive critics of music. Do not think being a guitarist is a race to see who is the best.
Most people seem to be missing monjoUtube's point. He's only saying that you can't call someone a better guitar player then another simply because they're too different to be compared. As for his painter reference, Rembrandt and Caravagio are both very different painters, which is why you can't call one better than the other. Just my 2 cents. Brilliant playing.
@monjoUtube that is the most stupid comment i've ever heard, so who was greater da vinci, or van gogh?! who was greater van gogh or steve vai. They've accomplished more goal than you and I will ever do. so stfu!
Pure genius. If you don't like this, you can't play the guitar. End of...
I like Joe Pass, I like Stochello Rosenberg and Paco DeLucia, I like Charlie Christian, Django Reinheardt, and of course this isn't better than them... Only a very foolish person would say that Rembrant was a better painter than Caravagio; the only thing they had in common is that they were painters, and exactly the same sort of thing can be said of these musicians.
I've been listening to Stanley for over 25 years. Nobody in history has mastered a guitar like him. And hopefully this video will support my opinion that Stanley shines best performing solo...without a band. When it's just him and his guitar that is when the true magic of Stanley Jordan and his unique sound is displayed best. Fuck a band! They just fuck it all up for a special guitarist like him. Guys like George Benson, BB King and Jonathan Butler need a band. Stanley stands alone!
@musichopper: i know you are called the robot and you say you are a world renowned musician. congrats if you actually are. i haven't heard of you, and nobody i know has heard of you, but that doesn't prove ur not world renowned i guess. yea, you've got fast licks, but from what i've seen, you don't have half the musicality that stanley jordan has. he's a musical prodigy, and if you can't see this and respect it, you aren't half the musician you think you are.
I looked at his videos, and I wouldn't say he's a professional musician :P I think he's just a mediocre guitar player it seems who thinks a little too highly of himself.
Mooch666 has to be kidding. Stanley Jordan is among the best guitarists alive today. He was a concert pianist, and transferred his skill to guitar, and began using the unusual right hand hammering technique. He made it very popular and now many guitarists emulate his style, only none do it as well as Stanley. I can't find anybody better than Stanley anywhere, and I look constantly.
@mikezach i wasn't talking about stanley jordan :P How could anyone refute that he's a great musician. There was some kid earlier on this video who was saying he was a famous guitarist or something, and I looked at his videos and saw that he clearly wasn't.
Ok, ok I see what you mean. He isn't nearly as well known as some of the big name pop guitarists. But trust me, he is well-known in the jazz crowd. Also, ask any studio musician out there, and they will tell you that they have heard of Stanley ... believe me, I have asked. Ever hear of Andres Segovia?
@mikezach yeah I was referring to some kid who left a comment earlier in this video. I know Stanley Jordan is well known, I love his compositions. Andres Segovia sounds familiar, but I can't say I've heard anything by him; I'll have to check him out.
Seems very good at this stuff.. however, he is falling out of time often and should practice to a metronome a little more often, especially when working on contrasting rhythms.
Ridiculous. Stanley is a world renouned professional. If he didn'y play in perfect time, he meant it to be that way. Trust me, he has no deficiencies in keeping time.
I am also a world renowned professional and I am telling you he is playing off time and dropping rhythm. If he is doing it on purpose then his taste / style to me sucks.. Eric Johnson kills this guy with musicality in my taste.
@andy123456789A My response was to musichopper that claimed Stanley could not keep time. I guess when he found out Stanley is the real deal he removed the post :). I'm happy he comes annually to Blues Alley in DC.
Ingwi and some other guys like Van Halen also did tapping; so with my favorite guitar artist Joe Pass. Jordan just brings it to new heights of technical excellence and harmonics.
And he is very humble, so quiet... I watched him in Rio, Brazil during 2009 tour. 1st time and I could take some pictures with him! =D

MrRemiCormier 9 months ago
@MrRemiCormier if this comment was also intended for me, well, i listen to most of r'n'r genres, jazz fusion, most of the jazz genres, a bit of punk, heavy and power metal, blues, classical music, a bit of reggae, and have delved into rap and electro as deep as i could, though it never grew on me.. i do try to look around, but as i said above - if i like something it still doesn't mean it's a masterpiece...
i won't even mention LG and the likes :) and your english is just fine, don't sweat it
crwnv 9 months ago
@MrRemiCormier you definitely have a different perspective on masterpieces... :) still, i do agree, there's great stuff in all sorts of music, and i do give a chance to anything that might sound good... but i just don't like modern rap and any sort of electro... thanks for the recommendations, though..
but, we did kind of drift away from the topic - great stuff or not, I'm still not sure if most of those could be called masterpieces.. we should have probably defined that first :)

bensooty1 5 months ago
@StupidHatMatt: No need to feel bad for Jordan: His first tour sold out everywhere, & because it was just him alone, he immediately became one of the wealthiest musicians in history. This enabled him to virtually turn his back on the show-biz aspects of music & focus on the music itself & therapeutic qualities./ Cpmpare that to best-selling artists like Lady GaGa, who spend so much money on production that they -lose- money on the road.

its not about speed, its not about fancy tricks and flips, not even about the people whomake the music. It's about the music itself and the raw soul and energy that generates from guitarists like this guy.
gekcoification 1 year ago

Jordan

Simply the best guitarist I've seen since Jimmy Hendricks! A real treat to see and appreciate ! Thank you for posting this amazing artist :)
wraparound2000 1 year ago
Most people seem to be missing monjoUtube's point. He's only saying that you can't call someone a better guitar player then another simply because they're too different to be compared. As for his painter reference, Rembrandt and Caravagio are both very different painters, which is why you can't call one better than the other. Just my 2 cents. Brilliant playing.

@monjoUtube rembrant was better than caravagio.

@musichopper: i know you are called the robot and you say you are a world renowned musician. congrats if you actually are. i haven't heard of you, and nobody i know has heard of you, but that doesn't prove ur not world renowned i guess. yea, you've got fast licks, but from what i've seen, you don't have half the musicality that stanley jordan has. he's a musical prodigy, and if you can't see this and respect it, you aren't half the musician you think you are.
zasshu88 1 year ago 2
I looked at his videos, and I wouldn't say he's a professional musician :P I think he's just a mediocre guitar player it seems who thinks a little too highly of himself.

zasshu88 1 year ago
from who you are talkin abot '? sTANLEY jORDAN ???
redenied 1 year ago
Mooch666 has to be kidding. Stanley Jordan is among the best guitarists alive today. He was a concert pianist, and transferred his skill to guitar, and began using the unusual right hand hammering technique. He made it very popular and now many guitarists emulate his style, only none do it as well as Stanley. I can't find anybody better than Stanley anywhere, and I look constantly.
mikezach 1 year ago 2
@mikezach i wasn't talking about stanley jordan :P How could anyone refute that he's a great musician. There was some kid earlier on this video who was saying he was a famous guitarist or something, and I looked at his videos and saw that he clearly wasn't.
mooch666 1 year ago
Ok, ok I see what you mean. He isn't nearly as well known as some of the big name pop guitarists. But trust me, he is well-known in the jazz crowd. Also, ask any studio musician out there, and they will tell you that they have heard of Stanley ... believe me, I have asked. Ever hear of Andres Segovia?
mikezach 1 year ago
@mikezach yeah I was referring to some kid who left a comment earlier in this video. I know Stanley Jordan is well known, I love his compositions. Andres Segovia sounds familiar, but I can't say I've heard anything by him; I'll have to check him out.

Seems very good at this stuff.. however, he is falling out of time often and should practice to a metronome a little more often, especially when working on contrasting rhythms.
musichopper 1 year ago
