@Hot100daze1976to1997 Jesus, did they even have cars back then? I saw some people riding around on horses, I guess that's how people got around back then! lmao
@TheCheezhead15 Steve Goodman was a *fantastic* songwriter. Check out The Dutchman, Spoon River, Banana Republic, Old Fashioned....in addition to this great song.
I'll bet Arlo's Dad Woody would have loved covering this Steve Goodman song as well. Too bad he never had the chance. But for me, Goodman's song is great -- Arlo's version the definitive one to my ears. I am sure Goodman's is equally good. It's just that kind of song. There are many singers and songwriters who never write a song this beautiful. It's almost an American traditional song by now. Like "This Land Is Your Land."
Let's not forget the person who wrote the song -- Steve Goodman. A great song-writer from Chicago who died young of Leukemia. It was his hope that the royalties from this song would help his family when he was gone. I've never heard a bad version of this song -- which is a testament to how good Steve Goodman was as a writer.
Is it too cliche to say the first time I heard this was from a 'bum' who played my geetar the first time I hopped a train? ...And no, I didn't go to Nawlins, but it seemed appropriate enough..
@nightprowlerful Not to disrespect, but you're incorrect. Steve Goodman wrote the song for a 1971 album. Goodman being famous for writing "Go Cubs Go" and "Confessions of a Dying Cubs Fan". Killer good folk player. It's a shame he passed well before his time in 1984
@Studio51Music I love Steve Goodman, but I still love Arlo's City of New Orleans, but mostly I love to hear Arlo tell the story of Steve pitching the song to him in 1970 in a bar in Chicago at 2 o'clock in the morning.
I love this song, but I never understood the "good night, America, how are you" you say good night when you are leaving, not as a greeting. It's just peculiar. I still love the song.
@judithcdp Probably because the City of New Orleans was heading south towards New Orleans in the night. And he was greeting America as they travelled south
WSBK, an underated independent Boston station! I always loved this song, I was singing it for some reason this morning at work and just had to hear it.
I discovered "Underground radio" with this song, working at a camp in Colorado the summer of '73. Major nostalgia, but it's also amazing how authentic and wonderful it still is.
Ah, one of my all-time favorite songs. Beautiful tune and lyrics from Arlo. Linda Ronstadt helped out singing backup harmony,I believe. Thankyou 1michelemichele1.
@brad238899 Thanks for the kind comment friend. I guess I never really looked on my old LP to see who wrote the tune but Arlo's version is my favorite.(I like Willie Nelson but his rendition just doesn't compare) Happy trails to you.
I told my Dad I was going to New Orleans in the summer and he told me "You have to get an ipod and stick this on it!"
Tonight's the first time I've listened to it and I'm addicted!
Can't wait to go to New Orleans this summer!
