Don't get me wrong when I say this; I love Jazz, especially Bebop, and especially Gillespie, but one thing I still have trouble getting used to are those froggy cheeks he's got...
I wish he would stop puffing his cheeks. Brass instruments aren't really supposed to do that. But when you are a famous black musician I guess you can. But this guy is an awesome trumpet player. I wish I could play Trombone a good as he plays trumpet.
@ZombieKiller1234321 Cool. Apparently, Trombone is slightly difficult to improvisise on at first. But if your good and have vibrato and stuff, then solos start to sound pretty cool.
@acousticsades@Ndguy@fb55guitarzep .. you are partially right it was bent by the dancers stump and stumpy during a part while it was siting on a stand b4 he was going to play it... he had it immediately professionally fixed but he discovered some of the tones created by the bent trumpet couldn't be replicated so he sent hand drawn specifications to have the been instrument professionally fashioned en.wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Dizzy_Gillespie#Early_life_and_career
I would really like to know why Dizzy's trumpet is facing up words? Is it a custom thing he likes or a story behind it? If anyone could help and not make up some random story it would be much appreciated!
@AcousticShades I took an Intro to jazz and blues course and our teacher told us (I think) that Dizzy set his trumpet on a chair during practice and somebody accidentally set on it and bent the trumpet upward, he couldnt bend it back cuz it would crack the metal so he left it and he like the sound it made anyway so he kept it
@AcousticShades I assume the way he liked to play he would point the horn towards the ground, and lead trumpet should have it up. And so to compensate he simply bent the bell so he could play like he was pointing to the ground and still have the sound pointing up. A theory.
dizzys mouth blows up because when he was young his family was poor and he was really good at the trumpet so he played it for money but he diddnt give his face a rest because had 2 choices to sacrifice his face or let his family go hungry without hesitation he sacrificed his face and thats why when he plays the trumpet his face goes big
@ModernVisage it isnt exactly bad tecnique per se but see how much his cheeks puff out.... that is why also yes it effects many aspects of playing but when your like him ... well.... nuff said

Wynton Marsalis circular breathes and his cheeks aren't blew out like that. It is from damage for using wrong techq. I'm a trumpet player and a drummer. Been around music most of my life. I never perfected circular breathing but my cheeks weren't like his. My first trumpet teacher told me what was going on with Dizzy. Still the man by all means!
@arsenalroxx2222 hostroute is correct, the condition is common amongst trumpet players who try at a young age to play high notes, they put so much pressure on the muscles in their necks (and cheeks in Dizzy's case) that they rupture. Maynard Ferguson, Wayne Bergeron, and Miles Davis all had the same condition to varying degrees
@hostroute Both of you are wrong. Dizzy did not have a medical condition like that but for the most part he is not circular breathing as well. He puffs his cheeks and neck out the whole time he plays, and to circular breathe you only puff your cheeks out when you are breathing in through your nose, while pushing the air from your mouth out using your cheeks. so there
@hostroute Both of you are wrong. Dizzy did not have a medical condition like that but for the most part he is not circular breathing as well. He puffs his cheeks and neck out the whole time he plays, and to circular breathe you only puff your cheeks out when you are breathing in through your nose, while pushing the air from your mouth out using your cheeks. so there
@zendrummerSG Possibly! The story goes his trumpet was bent by mishap (perhaps someone sat on it) and he played it and liked the sound better after it was bent. So from then on his trumpets were customised to be like this. :)
@onceonlyaz well, they are pieces of metal worked in to a musical intrument, designed to be hit generally with a stick or mallet. In most forms of popular music they are used as part of a drum kit, as seen here.
I had noooo idea Bill Cosby could play that well :) I'm kidding! I know this is Dizzy. I'm a trumpeter too, and if I didnt know him, I'd be a complete idiot. But, thank God I do know :)
I saw Dizzy Gillespie's Dream Band in 1980, and one of the few things I remember about it was that the last number was called "Vote Dizzy," to the tune of "Salt Peanuts."
haha when hes blowing away he reminds me of the whoville's from the movie The Grinch (Staring Jim Carey) ironically i looked up this song cos the bathroom scene in The Cable Guy (Staring Jim Carey) xD
@bigbandman95 wayne bergeron is the man! anyway he also has scars on his lips from holding the trumpet too tightly in high school marching band and playing with excessive tension. i met him my sophomore year of high school. neat guy.
@shrimpy060 He came to my school when I was in 7th grade, and we got to open for him at his concert that night! He's great on stage, and a nice guy to talk to.
@hostroute your wrong dizzie gilespie did not have any medical condition like that he was practiseing a technique of trumpet playing called circulatory breathing where you suck in air from the sides of your mouth while playing a wind instrument for unlimited sustain
@spacepatrolman No. You are wrong. Its a condition called surgical emphysema caused by him not blowing correctly when he was very young. This is well documented.
@arsenalroxx2222 Except its not his cheeks. He burst through to the tissues in his neck by blowing incorrectly as a young man. It really is a condition called surgical emphysema. Dizzy spoke about the damage he had done through poor technique often.
@arsenalroxx2222 yeah, when you circular breath you puff your cheeks out almost like a bag pipe, but not the whole time, its quick, Dizzy just always played like this and im pretty sure has gone through several reconstructive surgeries on his cheeks because of it, bottom line, dont puff your cheeks out =p
@arsenalroxx2222 man, don't be stern. I've heard and read that his condition is indeed surgical emphysema, but it was really rare to happen to anyone: Dizzy was an exception, cause his poor technique when young shouldn't have generated such a massive aesthetic condition, despite what he said back then.
btw, circular breathing does indeed have a similar effect on SOME people, but never on such level as Dizzy's, for example, Arturo Sandoval, a very good friend of Dizzy's, practices that technique and has displayed some puffy cheeks when playing, but his have never inflated to a massive extent:
