  • I think the crowd just isn't recorded well enough

  • this is not fuking hard!!

  • Worst crowd

  • Don't get me wrong when I say this; I love Jazz, especially Bebop, and especially Gillespie, but one thing I still have trouble getting used to are those froggy cheeks he's got...

  • Bill Cosby ?

  • OOF MOOD SQUAD

    Great tune though.

  • the crowd was too busy talking about his cheeks to sing...

  • that croud is retarded lol

  • Is that lebron James on drums

  • 2:25 Dem cheeks.

  • he looks like a frog :D

  • I wish he would stop puffing his cheeks. Brass instruments aren't really supposed to do that. But when you are a famous black musician I guess you can. But this guy is an awesome trumpet player. I wish I could play Trombone a good as he plays trumpet.

  • @ZombieKiller1234321 You do realize he's aware. But he cant. He was born without sheek muscles, so he isn't able to.

  • @RINGMASTER1118 Sorry, i didn't realize!

  • @ZombieKiller1234321 jajajaja it's k. At least you noticed. I wouldn't have because I'm a vibe jazz player. Are you a horn player?

  • @RINGMASTER1118 Hell yeah! Trombone. Best wind instrument ever!

  • @ZombieKiller1234321 Cool. Apparently, Trombone is slightly difficult to improvisise on at first. But if your good and have vibrato and stuff, then solos start to sound pretty cool.

  • @RINGMASTER1118 its a little difficult. But with a few year experience it easy!

  • @acousticsades @Ndguy @fb55guitarzep .. you are partially right it was bent by the dancers stump and stumpy during a part while it was siting on a stand b4 he was going to play it... he had it immediately professionally fixed but he discovered some of the tones created by the bent trumpet couldn't be replicated so he sent hand drawn specifications to have the been instrument professionally fashioned en.wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Dizzy_Gillespie#Early_life_and_career

  • Amazing piece of music!

  • he looks funny ;)

  • It always amazes me how the hell he was so fucking good playing the trumpet that way lmao

  • he's like a frog or a toad when he blows the trumpet.

  • I would really like to know why Dizzy's trumpet is facing up words? Is it a custom thing he likes or a story behind it? If anyone could help and not make up some random story it would be much appreciated!

  • @AcousticShades I took an Intro to jazz and blues course and our teacher told us (I think) that Dizzy set his trumpet on a chair during practice and somebody accidentally set on it and bent the trumpet upward, he couldnt bend it back cuz it would crack the metal so he left it and he like the sound it made anyway so he kept it

  • @AcousticShades I assume the way he liked to play he would point the horn towards the ground, and lead trumpet should have it up. And so to compensate he simply bent the bell so he could play like he was pointing to the ground and still have the sound pointing up. A theory.

  • dizzys mouth blows up because when he was young his family was poor and he was really good at the trumpet so he played it for money but he diddnt give his face a rest because had 2 choices to sacrifice his face or let his family go hungry without hesitation he sacrificed his face and thats why when he plays the trumpet his face goes big

  • @axelsapprentice thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard and it is not true.

  • It looks a little scary, but he's reeaally goood

  • who's on guit?

  • 5:18- 5:20, night in Tunisia?

  • @coltranesaxIV There was the same quote at the beginning of Dizzy's playing too.

  • Isn't blowing with cheeks bad technique?

  • @ModernVisage it isnt exactly bad tecnique per se but see how much his cheeks puff out.... that is why also yes it effects many aspects of playing but when your like him ... well.... nuff said

  • he's such a cutie. i wanna hug him. that isn't weird, right? oh well...who cares.

  • I didn't know Bill Cosby could play the trumpet...

Haha jk, his voice just sounded like him at the beginning of the video.

  • its real scary how his cheeks and his neck blows up.

  • 2.24

  • pause at 2:42 = EPIC FACE

pause at 2:52 = EPIC FACE

pause at 2:55 = EPIC FACE

  • Thumbs up if "The Cable Guy" brought u here!

  • Diggin the 90 degree cymbal angle.

  • I thought he looked like a bullfrog. THis is my first time watching a video of him. Really awesome player but that face is priceless.

  • Dizzy is like, who Bill Cosby would be if he were actually funny.

  • does anyone else think of bill cosby when he talks?

  • well that was awesome...

  • He looks like a fucking frog when he blows haha!

  • OMG...I was AT this concert! Found this video after watching an older one a mate posted...and commented about this concert - it was awesome and I was sitting only a few seats from the stage (which rotated 360 degrees so everyone had a good seat).

Whoever filmed this did a brilliant job...

Ontario Place Forum, Toronto, Ontario (Canada) circa 1975

  • Wynton Marsalis circular breathes and his cheeks aren't blew out like that. It is from damage for using wrong techq. I'm a trumpet player and a drummer. Been around music most of my life. I never perfected circular breathing but my cheeks weren't like his. My first trumpet teacher told me what was going on with Dizzy. Still the man by all means!

  • why isn't this crown going crazy for dizzy? they should be ashamed!

  • Dumb crowd

  • BOOM

    Crowd: .....

    Me: *facepalm*

  • @Skutieos7

Exactly.... do they not realize what is happening in front of them?

  • @arsenalroxx2222 hostroute is correct, the condition is common amongst trumpet players who try at a young age to play high notes, they put so much pressure on the muscles in their necks (and cheeks in Dizzy's case) that they rupture. Maynard Ferguson, Wayne Bergeron, and Miles Davis all had the same condition to varying degrees

  • thumbs up for the most awkward drum solo in 5:30

  • @namwoolala actually its a GREAT solo, he really displays musicality rather than just ramming notes that you probably expected...

  • who the hell cares about why his cheeks are like that... he's fcking amazing and thats all that matters.

  • @cheeserulesall1 There is no way to link to articles here, but it is documented in a number of articles.

  • @hostroute Both of you are wrong. Dizzy did not have a medical condition like that but for the most part he is not circular breathing as well. He puffs his cheeks and neck out the whole time he plays, and to circular breathe you only puff your cheeks out when you are breathing in through your nose, while pushing the air from your mouth out using your cheeks. so there

  • @hostroute any names or sources so we can look it up on our own?

  • Did someone sit on his trumpet? ;P

  • @zendrummerSG

    yes, at a party

  • @zendrummerSG Possibly! The story goes his trumpet was bent by mishap (perhaps someone sat on it) and he played it and liked the sound better after it was bent. So from then on his trumpets were customised to be like this. :)

  • The Bill Cosby of Jazz

  • i am not trying to be funny or rude when i ask this but i wonder if that hurts when he dose that

  • what the fuck is with the cymbals

  • @onceonlyaz well, they are pieces of metal worked in to a musical intrument, designed to be hit generally with a stick or mallet. In most forms of popular music they are used as part of a drum kit, as seen here.

  • @vdeferens no shit but there really big and dumb looking

  • These people must have not been aware that there was a living legend in their presence...

  • I had noooo idea Bill Cosby could play that well :) I'm kidding! I know this is Dizzy. I'm a trumpeter too, and if I didnt know him, I'd be a complete idiot. But, thank God I do know :)

  • does it hurt?

  • sloppy nuts, sloppy nuts

  • Accent the PE

  • reminds me of Bill Cosby

  • Ive blown my cheeks up to the point where they felt like they were going to explode and it fuckin hurts.

  • crowd is gay

  • Talk about grooving "In The Pocket", OH HELL YEAH!!!

  • Looks Like a Small Crowd~ How Big this that place?

  • Fuck the crowd.

  • HIS HEAD IS BLOWING UP! D:

  • Dizzy Gillespie seen here storing music in his cheeks for the long winter ahead.

  • ...not a single laugh. That was hilarious.

  • that fucking drummer, man...

    holy fuck

  • @shizbie93 hahaha, yes but his music its soooo great , croack :D

  • I heard part of the head of A Night in Tunisia in there! :D

  • @Kursevalify Where?

  • Dude, I typed that up looking for something about Dizzy and I see some huge fuckin' inflated balls that look like balloons O.o

  • That drum set is ridiculous... :-p

  • Owwwww!!! My Neck!!!

  • I'm pretty sure I've seen senior citizens more excited than his audience...

  • @airbornman7 If Matlock was on, yeah for sure.

  • each of his cheeks looks like a sideways butt. im surprised he has two eyes

  • Dizzyyyyyy .... One of the pioneers of Jazz

  • I saw Dizzy Gillespie's Dream Band in 1980, and one of the few things I remember about it was that the last number was called "Vote Dizzy," to the tune of "Salt Peanuts."

  • i underestimated how big his cheeks blew out!

  • I wish I was there I would scream at the top of my lungs.

  • what a crowd!

  • dizzy is fresh! he looks like a frog

  • Comment removed

  • I feel my cheeks sore when I see his!

  • Bloody hell his cheeks !

  • haha when hes blowing away he reminds me of the whoville's from the movie The Grinch (Staring Jim Carey) ironically i looked up this song cos the bathroom scene in The Cable Guy (Staring Jim Carey) xD

  • that must be the worst feeling ever to have the crowd suck like that great song

  • he is soooo good. But when he blows on that watever instruments... he look like frog... no offence.. but yea really luv dizzy's music

  • :D 2:51

  • go to 1:51 to hear him start playing

  • Number One Ever. Period.

  • i always knew he blew his cheeks out like that, i didnt realize his NECK did it too

  • Its a condition called Subcutaneous Emphysema. Look it up on Wikipedia.

  • @hostroute Looks kinda like what Wayne Bergeron does, except a lot worse.

  • @bigbandman95 wayne bergeron is the man! anyway he also has scars on his lips from holding the trumpet too tightly in high school marching band and playing with excessive tension. i met him my sophomore year of high school. neat guy.

  • @shrimpy060 He came to my school when I was in 7th grade, and we got to open for him at his concert that night! He's great on stage, and a nice guy to talk to.

  • @hostroute he looks like a FROG! haha but he's an amazing musician regardless

  • @hostroute That's not correct. In his biography, he stated that it was a result from playing incorrectly. he wasn't born with it.

  • @mcrkid22 True. Its a result of bad technique. Full stop. Or period. Depends where you come from.

  • @hostroute your wrong dizzie gilespie did not have any medical condition like that he was practiseing a technique of trumpet playing called circulatory breathing where you suck in air from the sides of your mouth while playing a wind instrument for unlimited sustain

  • @spacepatrolman No. You are wrong. Its a condition called surgical emphysema caused by him not blowing correctly when he was very young. This is well documented.

  • @hostroute dude it is circular breathing. Thats why his cheeks go out like that bro. exactly how spacepatrolman said

  • @arsenalroxx2222 Except its not his cheeks. He burst through to the tissues in his neck by blowing incorrectly as a young man. It really is a condition called surgical emphysema. Dizzy spoke about the damage he had done through poor technique often.

  • @hostroute I think you're all right :P

  • @arsenalroxx2222 yeah, when you circular breath you puff your cheeks out almost like a bag pipe, but not the whole time, its quick, Dizzy just always played like this and im pretty sure has gone through several reconstructive surgeries on his cheeks because of it, bottom line, dont puff your cheeks out =p

  • @arsenalroxx2222 man, don't be stern. I've heard and read that his condition is indeed surgical emphysema, but it was really rare to happen to anyone: Dizzy was an exception, cause his poor technique when young shouldn't have generated such a massive aesthetic condition, despite what he said back then.

  • btw, circular breathing does indeed have a similar effect on SOME people, but never on such level as Dizzy's, for example, Arturo Sandoval, a very good friend of Dizzy's, practices that technique and has displayed some puffy cheeks when playing, but his have never inflated to a massive extent:

check Dizzy's virtuoso protegé Arturo Sandoval, in action:

  • @spacepatrolman thats not circular breathing. you don't breathe in through the sides of your mouth

  • @PickEmAndFlickEm theres sax players that do it too the blowing up cheeks thing that dizzy does is storing up air like bag pipes

  • @PickEmAndFlickEm idc about dizzie i'm just saying you don't breathe through the sides of your mouth when circular breathing

  • @hostroute Yeah cos I know my doctor looks shit up on Wikipedia. Screw medical school.

  • @BabyBoiQue lol, me either, it blew my mind.

  • @BabyBoiQue lol, me either, it blew my mind when I watched this video.

  • ooooooooooooooooo

    mmmmmmmmmyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

    gooooooooooooooooooooooooood

what the hell is going on with his face. Even his neck puffs up!!!

  • someone slipped xanax in the entire crowd's drinking water

  • it's probably in germany..

  • he kinda talks like bill cosby in the beginning lol...and i agree the crowd is some crap.

  • What a showman!

  • dope

  • guitar chords at 2:54 sound real nice

  • i meant 2:51 :D

  • look at that china and ride haha oh my god awesome. crazy style.

  • the worst crowed ever!....

  • I know!

  • @wallacels1 open air performance... accoustics didn't do it justice.

  • @wallacels1 crowd*

  • @wallacels1 i agree that was awful. imagine standing up there and asking them to say two simple words, and you get silence. it just completely kills the mood.

  • @wallacels1 it's more likely that the crowd didn't have mics near them, I mean, it was Dizzy!

  • @wallacels1 That's because they're a crowd not an audience...

  • @CreteNick @Simjo17 a 1970's Jazz crowd had respect for the musicians and their craft...they LISTENED...we also gave several standing ovations complete with whistling and shouts of "Oh yeah!" along the way! ;]

  • this is a jazz legend!

  • hehehehe his cheeks look like apples ish funny

  • 2:15 aww! :D

  • this guy is amazing.

  • The drummer sounds and looks like Tommy Campbell.

  • I think this is such a magnificently simple and creative song.

  • Dat's a funny lookin trumpet...

  • That funny trumpet is amazing!

  • of course.its his special style trumpet

  • anyone ever find out who is playing drums here? he is really cookin.

  • awesome song. Get a load of his cheeks. They're like fucking balloons. o.O

  • Who is playing drums for him?

  • that can't be good for his cheeks.

  • dizzy was a baaaaaaaaad man! not 'bad' meaning bad, But 'bad' meaning GOOD!

  • oh that bad lol why do we use the word bad these days it makes no sense

  • balloon face

  • thkis song is awsome, cudos to Dizzy
