There are only 3 people that could have pulled off contra and you need all three. Sylvester Stalone, Arnold Schwartzenegar, and James Cameron. You need all three and sadly they are all past their prime.

Hell yes James Cameron HE directed Aliens and Terminator 2 of the main inspirations of the series. I forgot the 4rth required production team member and sadly he's dead died just last year back in '08. We need Stan Winston. The Canon Contra Games directly draw from each of these mens work thus the only oones that can do The game justice would be them.

This is actually almost happening; Uwe Boll and Robin Morningstar tried to do a film of Sega's Wonder Boy and got derailed and they're now they're going after Contra. It was in Retro Gamer Magazine and the Wonder Boy script was posted online. It's not bad actually, hope Contra is as good.
