Yeah no I dont think that the video needs some kind of a gay undertone to make it more powerful. I think the fact that hes using an old method of listening to music, a tape player, and the fact that he needs to find someone dealing in old tapes symbolizes the underground community of people who still love real music and arent becoming jaded and bogged down by modern pop. The video doesnt have anything to do with the lyrics, but its more relating to the song title.
note: to those who are telling me to "get a grip"... very mature. My personal opinion is NOT that the video is "gay" but that it SHOULD have had a solid "gay" element to be more effective and stronger.
@Themiszerak. that would be an interesting take. but then why don't just show the drugs. the concept of addiction is an interesting one yet the band makes it very clear that it is more a throwback to "the old days" - a more existentialistic portrait and elegy to youth
This video is about the nostalgia of remembering the ol'good times gone, which are symbolized by a guy who desperately wants to keep them alive by buying a cassette and playing it, when everything around him is nothing but the coldness of a modern and empty life. Klimt 1918 are ALL about nostalgia and melancholy. This is why I love them so much.
I despise banal and gay interpretations, so please stay off with your stupid comments about sexuality and tolerance.
brilliant! i mean...those fucking hair, those fucking expressions in their faces and their absofucklutly amazing english pronounciation....the world is not ready for you...but carry on! we luv u all! especially the drummer...just great!!
mi sembra di riconoscere dei luoghi di trastevere nel video...cmq...pezzo magnifico, come tutto l'album e gli album precedenti...bravissimi ragazzi, continuate a fare ottima musica per noi della "generazione delle cassette"
Gay is not always "gay"... it can also exemplify an existentialistic pov that can be very deep: look at Sigur Ros's video (the one with the kid playing soccer who is gay and is mistreated by his father etc.)... the story would have achieved so much more fate and meaning.
@charcoalspirits i disagree. i think this video ia bout addiction to drugs. the ending reminds of a typical "pushing" situation. he's so desperate because he needs his drug. ghost of a tape listener=someone who lives passively listening instead of really living. my opinion...
I'm pretty sure he's addicted to the music (needs his fix), I don't know where or why you got a feeling that there's a sexual undertone between him and his "dealer" but if you're straining that far to find a correlation that weak... I mean all I can say is get a grip man.
what a disappointment. The video is well shot and directed but i was hoping for something deeper. First of all, the story within the video ends on a flat note. I feel like many would have expected the "bike rider" to leave everything and then find the guy who is driving the car and then kiss him... yes... some might not be very into that whole "gay" thing but that's what many expected by watching the video and listening to the words...
I agree with you, but I do feel the music video works in a sort of tranche-de-vie manner, very reminiscent of the Italian neorealism movement. It works within itself, but not much further.
reminescent of italian neo-realism? neo ralism was about poverty, struggle, and the will to move on and step forward when things were torn apart (and literally, by the war). A kid who spends 20 Euros on a tape seems to me more like a spoiled brat supported by his parents rather than a kid from the booms trying to survive and make the best of his life (in a Pasolinian kind of way)... yes, the video works within itself, but being somewhat simplistic it appears to me as cliche' and commercial.

i think it actually was the intention of the director, having us guessing about that kind of "hidden gay story" or whatever, i love it

The answer is at the end of the video "to the cassette generation"...I was there and this video speaks to me a lot...
neo-realism was after ww2, it doesn't mean u can't see a certain resemblance in more contemporary times.
