This breaks my heart just to see, only really cruel people would set this place on fire, and kill people without any reason, as if you had any reason, it wouldn't make it better.
Some places don't have the death penalty for many reasons . If the guilty is put to death then they don't have to live with the guilt knowing they took a life or many lives. If a person is sentenced to life imprisonment then they live with the guilt for the rest of their lives. At one moment in their lives the person will have some type of guilt for what they have done, even if they haven't felt it yet, its still there, somewhere deep inside.
They actually WERE union workers... and Puerto Rico is a US territory, not a Third World Country...ignorant... do a little research before commenting smart guy...
and originally, their plan was to scare tourists away from the Dupont by means of making a series of bomb threats before resorting to arson as a way to intimidate the guests. it's a shame it turned out like it did, with 98 casualties
The problem with some of the Latin terrorities is that they don't believe in the death penalty. These Union Scum that caused this fire and murdered 98 people needed to be put to death. Union Scum.
Stuff like this always makes people talk about the countries and the laws in them. How many states in the US still DO NOT have the death penalty sir? Now let me ask you another question, did the USA have the death penalty in the 1980s? There's been many people who have risked hundreds in their acts of hate, and sometimes just for the money. Some of those crimes are punished with the regulations within the time they happened. Timothy McVeigh was lethal injected in 2001, too recent to compare.
someone has a version of this clip with extra scenes like there was supposed to be a rescuer talking before the end and the ambulance going to hospital, is this a cbs version.
indeed, what was going to be a great day (being the last day of 1986), became a day where many lives were lost all because 3 disgruntled workers wanted a salary raise.
Not true. If you scroll all the way down on the wikipedia page of the event you'll find "Categories: Terrorist incidents in the 1980s". This was a not a "terrorist attack".
Indeed 9/11 has had profound effects, yet this was not a terrorist attack.
it's kinda strange that someone classified the Dupont fire as a terrorist incident when it was an arson. but then again, wikipedia has some info which needs to be fixed
i was only 2, but the father of one of my cousins was going to be there, but a last minute issue kept him from going there. also, a friend of my father died in the blaze. (that friend was actually a federal agent who was at the time investigating a case that involved the use of counterfeit bills at the Dupont's casino). i'm not insinuating an argument, but it shows that even if you're not there, but have heard of it. it affects you in a way.
I was living in PR at the time. I played a gig there a few days before the fire. I lost a neighbor in the casino.
There was a dispute between the hotel's administration and the employer's union. Two men from the union set up a sterno, one of those things you use to heat up meals. What started as a mere scare tactic turn into a huge fire. I believe those men are still in jail. Sad sad sad...
My grandparents died in this fire and as it get closer to the anniversary I find myself searching for an insight of what happened. I remember seeing this happen on the news, i remember thinking how sad it was. I remember not getting that call from Mom and Pop wishing us a Happy New Year. I remember seeing my dad break down for the first and only time. Thank you for your post.
I looked the info on this fire up on wikipedia and it says that of the 3 men convicted of the fire, only 1 is still in prison. The other two were released in 2001 and 2002... To cause a fire that took almost 100 lives and to only get about 15 years in prison is not right...
You know, if those employees who started the fire weren't happy with their jobs, why didn't they just quit instead of starting a fire? ANyway, if you have it, could you put the segment from this episode where a boy saves his brother who chokes on a piece of candy?
I was 5 or 6 when I saw this episode of Rescue 911; 17 years later, I still remember the episode vividly. I guess it was the creepy feeling of watching the helicopter with the spotlight searching for any survivors left, but found only empty rooms.
BTW, the felt and materials used to make the casino furniture and the furniture left to burn in the storage room was very flammable and was attributed to causing a large fire in a small amount of time. Now, hotels and casinos have changed their construction plans and furniture materials to be more flame retardant to increase chances of putting fire out in time.
I saw a disaster recreation of this event and the reason for the high body count was in was too few exits and poorly marked exits, yet so many people trying to leave at the same time- a big fire hazard commonplace of high population buildings constructed in the 70's and 80's.
and despite the fact that yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of the fire (12/31/06). it's still brings me chills (and back in '86, i was only 2 when this happened)
the scene I remember the most is when they find brandon and put him on the stretcher because that's heroic of the Rescuers to me and it reminds me of me being in the ambulance when I was little and in the hospital and O.R.
I still remember this horrible event as it was yesterday. Very sad!

I just love how the system works. The 3 got life in prison and 2 out of the 3 are already out. No big deal they only killed 98 people.

98 people were pulled out of the building after it was put out, that is not counting the jumpers.

I remember seeing skelotens burning in the windows and people in the lobby that were just sitting in the chairs dead from smoke .
it was macabre and eerie
