how is gays and lesbians be able to openly served in army a big issue? compare to health care and the war? they spent so much time on that... who cares if it's yes or no, how many people actually care in the military? you don't got time to promote homosexuality when bullets flying around!
Hey, check out 4:35...what is Hillary standing on?
By the way, thanks a million, researchris2, for posting this. I am currently living and working in China on a 10 month contract. We don't get CNN over here!!!
Am I the only one that feels that the first step in reducing America's need for oil products from other countries is to stop bending over to the BIG OIL COMPANIES by stoping buying the gas hog vehicles??? I truely believe that as long as we continue to buy them, we are basically telling the big oil companies and car companies that we'll bend over just as long as they want us to????
Also, looking at the visual layout of the debate it's obvious who's in the middle and in a position of stable leadership. Don't get me wrong though, most of the canidates appear solid despite. After Kucinich I'm likely for Obama. One underdog and one moviestar.
The layout resembles a popularity contest, but don't be surprised since it's CNN. They're looking for ratings and attention, which has been with the female, black and familiar canidate (Clinton, Obama and Edwards). Kucinich, Gravel and even Biden were impressive nearly everytime, but not asked to speak nearly as much as the 3 golden tokens.
you judge the greatness of a framework by judging what framework exhibits the best adherance to fundamental american principles and values of liberty, representative democracy, individual rights, limited government and free-market capitalism. problems do not have to lead to GOVERNMENT solutions. we have an amazing populace--let them solve problems on their own.
Kucinich is the only one who addresses the health care problem correctly. It's a shame Wolf cuts him off. I would have liked to see the front runners address how they would deal with the massive profits of the insurance and pharmaceutical companies.
also, those forces envisioned by smith are not present in the health care system because of government intervention. the whole system should be pretty simple unless you insist on a government safety net. doctors treat patients who pay an agreed upon rate. if they cant afford it they ask for help from other sources or they go without. government is not about achieving the greatest result, it's about adhering to the greatest framework.
proof--the system i describe is not based on opt-outs. government should protect us from each other and our country from its enemies, so military is in. so are courthouses and a police force. roads, i suppose, could arguably be protection-related, but i would not object to private companies being in charge of road systems, like they manage toll roads currently.
These ideas are indeed similar to those which were prominent in the USSR. French health care is a joke and costs its workers 40% in taxes. Try living in London on an American salary--good luck. It's ludicrous that America may be on the way there too. I should not pay for the medical care of others. Period, unless I choose to.
proffset: AMEN. the french healthcare systeme is the best in the world...there are BILLIONS of dollars in unpaid medical per year in the u.s. because people simply cannot afford the med bills, that eaten cost gets tossed back into every american's pocket & the costs rise every single day. as for the person that says the french pay lots of money in taxes-- well, they can still LIVE off a paycheck, and live a great, happy life. they must be doing SOMETHING right-- they're not starving.
USSR, Cuba went WAY too far, but some thinks make sense to have government intervention. Military, roads, city infrastructure are the most obvious examples. Would you grant me the right to decline paying for those because I don't want to?
Health care should be open to market forces. anything else is endorsing the use of force (whether tacit through administrative agencies or direct, through U.S. Marshalls) in order to ensure everyone comes to the same conclusion. I do not want health insurance. I do not want, either, to pay more taxes so that people who can't afford it or don't want it have it. We get to make personal choices in this country without the government forcing us one way or the other.
The problem is that market forces don't work well with health. Many of the conditions assumed by Adam Smith for an efficient market to work it's 'magic' are not, and cannot be, present in the health care market.
Comparing socialist ideas of these democrats to the USSR? Do you know anything about history? We're not talking universal central planning, we're talking HEALTH. This is not something that should be open to MARKET FORCES. And you compare to the USSR!? NO. The country we can compare with is the UK with their NHS, or France whose citizens are covered. YOU ALLOW YOUR TAX DOLLARS TO OVERPAY DEFENSE SPENDING, BUT YOU DO NOT THINK WE SHOULD ALLOW OUR TAX DOLLARS FOR OUR NATIONAL HEALTH!?
Kucinich and Gravel really are DIFFERENT from Hillary, Obama, and Edwards; they are not all the same, especially because the former aren't allowed to say anything.
Go back and count how many times Hillary was asked to speak and compare it to how many times Kucinich or Gravel were; then you will see what I mean. It was a media setup, just like the entire charade leading up to the primaries has been.

"government is not about achieving the greatest result, it's about adhering to the greatest framework."
If not by results, then by what criteria do you judge the greatness of a framework?

No, they pay a lot in taxes, but health care is a small slice of that. Americans on average pay more for their health insurance.
