  • As someone who grew up in the 70s i can tell you i think the songs khe sanh , i was only 19 and others of the time did more for the awareness of what the troops went through than anything politicians or any protesters could come up with . The songs said so much with so little and at times brought large sections of people to tears. Im glad i was a kid at the time , because the 6 oclock news was a horror show.

  • i love this song brings back good ol memories of me and me mates in punchy , on the vb good times singin along to the likes of barnsey , accadacca and peter garret...i love australia , love it or fuckin leave it people ,.....-TheJohnno

  • is this live i cant tell

  • @jazza141328

most bands in that day preformed on stage as their music video but it wasnt live.

  • The REAL Australian National Anthem!

  • It's bands like this that make me truly proud to be Australian.

  • If your a Cold Chisel Fan, your a true Aussie.

  • Don Walker, australia's greatest ever lyricist - Second Paul Kelly, Third Nicholas Cave.

  • seeing Jimmy Barnes tonight in brisbane :D

  • Jus so the world knows its unaustralian not.to know these lyrics of by heart. And if you dont its probably cause you came to australia and refused to intigrate lol

  • Go Jimmy Barnes!

  • Why are these Bogans breeding and their minds are less. This is one of Don's best as well as Steve( RIP). As with winning the lottery people just forget. They were nervous times 70's. Please listen too the lyrics. Bogans, I am not very bright but I can lift heavey things.

  • only 109,214 views! and 6 dislikes to boot!

    BAD FORM!

  • @Tahlexia those 6 are viet cong

  • i didnt know faggots like you lot who made them comments above listen to music like this....say that shit down the pub and them so called bogans will beat your skirt werin ass...you fuckin pillow biters (nzoz1978 and dirtygore)....

  • cheap wine and a 3 day growth

  • I don't think most people have seen this clip! There should be more of these songs style-wise...

  • one, obviously young guy, reckoned this song was named after khaosan rd.in thailand-i love the internet but it makes you realise how dumb so many of the young generation are,i was working in the public service when i was called up for the vietnam war aged 19 in 1968,the year of the khe sanh battle(the only lottery i have won(or lost, whichever way you look at it). yes, chisel should be part of the immigration test.please listen to the lryics before you comment on a song!

  • War has no glory

  • To those of us who grew up listening to, admiring and loving Cold Chisel it is an anthem of sorts because the culture of the time included get togethers and parties and gigs where copious amounts of alcohol were consumed. Most of us thought Cold Chisel were so representative of Australia at the time, it didn't matter what the lyrics were, it was just great Rock...

  • Not a big Chisels fan, but the lyrics on this piece are quite remarkable.

    To wit:

"Their hearts were held in fast suburban chains".

This is the closest the average bogan will get to poetry. ;-)

  • This song feels incomplete without a hundred drunk people singing along with it.

  • @Kermitron ha ha

  • @Kermitron *several thousand drunk people.

  • @KrAUSerMike wtf i hate remakes. i think remakes by other artists should be illegal. cause they are fucking up a completely awesome original song by changing lyrics and tempo and shit. i bet if they deleted ALL remakes, there would be 50% less songs in the world.

  • My Auntie lived next door to jimmys mum for a couple of years at Eliz Vle! Never a bad word could be said, she'd probably be say'n Can you please turn the music down. and my cousin and i would say yeah no worries, 1/2 hour later we would crank the music! ALOT of everything.

  • Such a sad but brilliant song. A true classic!

  • before there was Axl and Guns n Roses, there was Barnesy and Cold Chisel (for pub rock). Long live the King!

  • i wish they had this version on itunes, so far they only have a slower paul kelly version and the others are live versions with clapping and cheering in the background.

  • definitely not actually playing live. I dont care though. awesome song. Jimmy's voice had such an amazing tone when he was younger too. fuckin gun.

  • Man, the name of the song it's "Khe SaNH" not "SaHN" cause this is the Vietnamese name of the military base xD

  • To me this is a song about a man who is lost and searching for something. This is all too common. We all have a God shaped hole in us and many try to fill it with all sorts of things before hopefully realising that God is the only one who can.

  • This sond should be our national anthem. Anyone agree??

  • @JamesJonathon013 This or Working Class Man by Jimmy Barnes

  • a young jimmy barnes always reminds me of heath ledger in the movie 'two hands' very similar appearance

  • I'm going to sing this to my beautiful sheila Athena from Seattle. ^_^

  • Such a unique voice, these kinds of songs dwarf the style we hear on the radio nowadays.

  • @Devilshumour funny thing was that the popularity of this song was derived from the radio in Adelaide

  • @ipsilon160 As I said, nowadays. Back then radios were golden!!

  • @Devilshumour i don't listen to the radio often there is too much shitty music on. so i have my cold chisel CDs to listen to as well as my Jimmy Barnes collection. i might be 24 but i love my 70s and 80s era of music and have a deep appretiation of Australian music. my favourite chisel CD is circus animals that is a golden cd

  • This song be the official Australian national anthem; surly! Go Jimmy!!

  • heard this in a pub in brissey and every one there was singing along, it was a great moment one i will never forget!

  • this song shouldnt have a like button it needs a LOVE button, LOVE ITT

  • the best thing out of sydneys almost gone , could some one tell me what the hell that is because I truelly believe the state transit add truelly fucked up this song damn you government transport

  • Hey, thanks for posting this. Excellent quality in every way. I don't know how many times a piece of me died when another of our boys, after surviving the hell-hole that was Vietnam, got taken out by cops in a stake-out, desperate & alone.

  • As a prisoner of mother england, went and saw Jimmy in 1992...........pure quality

  • Such a great band I got this album on cassette, in 1993 when traveling in Australian. The song makes me miss the lucky land, really bad every time I hear it.

  • If you were not part of it... than you can't say anything except good things about this song

  • no matter the meaning of the song,, this has got to be one of the greatest masterpieces ever written and recorded.

  • Brilliant song from a brilliant band.

  • i agree with both sides of the argument !

khe sahn was fought by american marines!

not australians but on the other hand he sings "i left my heart to the sappers round khe sahn" he doesnt say anything about being there or fighting there!

on the other hand this song would be more appropriate to be called long tan!!

  • @michaeloconnell84 I think the song title is irrelevant, although granted Lon Tan is more fitting for an Australian song.... but in a lot of way Khe Sahn is a public representation of the waste and loss of life in Vietnam, so in that sense its a more universal meaning than just for Australia.... Either that or they were shit faced and got the two confused while writing lol

  • Exactly. Such a great song. I find a lot of those songs that are rallying cries are usually very ironic, either because of the artist singing them or for the lyrics.

  • I was in the pub last night and these irish guys were there requesting khe sahn and i cheered them on and this chick who was real aggied up and real butch cowgirl asked me what khe sahn was. i pulled the akubra off her head and told her to stop being disrespectful and to stop callin herself an aussie till she found out,.!

  • Comment removed

  • I don't think I know an Aussie who doesn't know this song.

  • HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY!!!!!!!

  • every aussie knows this song!

  • @magicanth5 I am expecting this to get played at least once tonight here in Manchester UK :D Happy Australia Day!

  • ah, takesme back to the great times I had down under. Time of my life..

  • This comes to show that 70's and 80's rock is much better than the new rap crap music

  • @Jojo90659

    Agree well said

  • @Jojo90659 another ignorant person putting down a genre of music going by what they hear on the radio......

  • sigh, beautiful music. sounds so similiar to some of billy joel's stuff.

  • I too associated this song with big drunken mobs and for many years I hated it. But to listen to it, it's quite poignant and powerful. What these kids went through in Vietnam, and what kind of men they became because of it. From my understanding it's a road-dog song, about a guy who can't find peace or answers anywhere, especially back home. In the past 6 months it's become one of my favourite songs of all time!

  • LOL. The irony of Khe Sanh is lost on bogans of course. Even the very pinnacle of boganhood the Australian Cricket Team celebrate a win with a rousing rendition of a song about a man who can no longer stand to be in Australia

  • Great comment and a very good observation. This song has gone over the head's of many, many people over the years. They either under estimate the power of the lyrics or they just do not listen in to the story. Quite laughable.

Thank you for the insightful comment.

  • @nzoz1978 It's still a beautiful song nonetheless.

  • @nzoz1978 i just cant understand why it has just flowen over peoples heads like i love this song i believe our aussie culture is just too modern they need more of these songs. the age now most songs don't even make sense and every song is about parties, getting wasted, how big someone dick is, fucking a chick or about a male dick or ass fetish. i just don't get it i think if someone doesn't at least like this they shouldn't be australian (i know there are many other ways people are aussie)

  • Question for you - do you ever find yourself looking for paper after taking a dump?

  • Ha ha. Bogans are great, aren't they?

  • yes they are

  • @dirtygore Yeah it's exactly the same as Brucie's Born in the USA. Everyone mumbles the verse and shouts along with the chorus, stupid bloody Yanks! Ha!

  • @dirtygore I always found the irony that the racist rednecks overlook is that its about a man desperate to leave Australia in order to get laid in Asia lol

  • @dirtygore... maybe you should go read the lyrics again and what the commentary is before you go ahead and make an "insight"... this song was about the post traumatic stress suffered by Aussies coming home from the Vietnam war....The battle of Khe Sanh... (see that name there?) maybe that will ring a bell.

He doesn't want to leave Australia... he wants to find an answer for the way he feels... Go study up on it and try again... I think the Irony is lost on you.

  • @dirtygore, I think you are mistaken here. This song is about how disconnected the Vietnam vet became because of his wartime experience (arguably, post traumatic stress), and of his struggle to re-integrate into society. It's not so out of place on the cricket field when you consider that another unofficial Aussie anthem, Waltzing Matilda, is about a man who steals a sheep and then commits suicide just before being caught by the police. Both songs are tragic, yet hauntingly beautiful.

  • if you pay closer attention to they lyrics you will find that it is not about a man that can no longer stand to be in Australia but is about a Vietnam veteran that returns to Australia and cannot find his place in society or the world. He then travels around the world looking for anwsers aimlessly and at the end of the song he is leaving Australia to keep aimlessly looking for answers and is heading to hong kong for sex. It is by far more about the effect the Vietnam war had on vets.

  • @letsgetiton84

    totally agree

  • if you pay closer attention to they lyrics you will find that it is not about a man that can no longer stand to be in Australia but is about a Vietnam veteran that returns to Australia and cannot find his place in society or the world. He then travels around the world looking for anwsers aimlessly and at the end of the song he is leaving Australia to keep aimlessly looking for answers and is heading to hong kong for sex. It is by far more about the effect the Vietnam war had on vets.

  • @letsgetiton84 Dont know how people can listen too this song and not find out what he's really singing about.

  • @letsgetiton84 exactly, at least someone is paying attention. Great song also.

  • @letsgetiton84 fucking spot on.

  • @letsgetiton84 beautiful expalnation, it's perfect!

  • @letsgetiton84 Wow, people thought it was about not liking Australia?! I always thought it was about 'Nam!

  • @letsgetiton84 I'm American, middle-east veteran, enlisted when I was 17. I'm getting old, but I'll never grow up and no place will ever be home. I can't stop listening to this song and Redgum's "I Was Only 19".

  • @dirtygore if you are the sort of person who seeks out songs just because they have deeper meanings then i sir feel sorry for you some songs are just good because they sound good and i think you would find that about 80% of people don't go looking for songs that have lyrics that reflect upon real things, the fact that you are insulting people for liking such a good song whether they understand it or not is sad and you should probably go listen to songs about suicide and try to relate to that

  • @SlutCuntBitchFuck Whats sad is you replying to a year old comment.

  • @dirtygore ur calling me sad for viewing a comment 1 year later as if its my fault for not watching this video a year ago? u just contradicted your own insult by replying you moron, your the one who still responds to things you said a year ago not me, i said it yesterday. Your the only bogan here buddy maybe you should go back to school

  • @SlutCuntBitchFuck no offense to you but its funny you getting up people saying they're bogans when you're name is SlutCuntBitchFuck :P

  • @dirtygore You had the same situation with Bruce Springsteen's 'Born In The Usa'. Americans getting all patriotic while singing along to it.

  • @dirtygore yep..this song and BORN IN THE USA ...and to a much lesser degree eric bogles " i hate wogs ' - this song is pretty much hated by a lot of "smart people' ....simply because bogans love it -yet if tom waits wrote it -they'd love it. Then again ...bogans dont get it either ! ...maybe because you had the wild man out front - and the cerebral writer hidden away ....maybe if don walker had sung this himself..it would have resonated properly.

  • @TheMichaelseymour Don Walker does not get enough credit

  • @dirtygore That is today's society, it doesn't matter if it is wrong so long as it is socially acceptable. This is socially accepted as a great Australian song, even if the meaning of the lyrics are lost on the lips of it's drunken singers.

  • this song is great! I love it; Jimmy barnes is so good!

  • i love this song! the piano is great and so is the lyrics. fuck the techno songs! a computer is not an istrument!!

  • Why isn't music like this now a days?

  • jimmy barnes he is stil going and lets hope he stil goes on on on on (yobby05 big fan go jimmy....

  • fucking brillant song. Cold Chisel one of the greatest 70's-80s bands of Oz

  • only 70's and 80's

I'm thinking the best band of all time

  • This is a bloody brillent aussie song . I love Jimmy barnes

  • for bear brave strong and true xx

  • Love the almost empty bottle of Johnny Red and the Coke on the piano, even still, this is one of the anthems of my youth.

  • Jimmy Barnes is awesome man!

  • Fuck off DUZZAMAH66 you dero, no one knows what the fuck you're on about, stop trying to be aussie and gangster at the same time.

  • great song!!!!

    man 2 man VB

    true aussie song

the lyrics remind me of a mate of mine. BIG SCOTTY

    love the bloke

this song shud be the national anthem

  • you have my vote for a new national anthem.

  • nebody know what tuning this is in (guitar)?

  • most guitars were just in standard tuning (E). But im not 100% sure.

  • I'm not sure what the name of the bar was but it was one of the country and western bars on pearl harbor naval base. Put it this way. They liked it so much that all we played for the rest of the night where chisel, hoodoogurus and ACDC. But the Yanks loved it. Still it sucked that we spent Australia day there. Although we all ran a muck.

  • the singer of the hoodoo gurus went to school with my dad!!!

  • "Fact: Dismissing Cold Chisel as a band for piss-heads is a serious sign that you need to see an Otolaryngologist."

That was me until my musical tastes matured at around 30 years of age and I could see them for what they truely were - one of Oz's great bands.

(but Oz has many great bands)

  • classic !

i may only be 15 but i no the words of this better then the national anthem but i still think the anthem is what the athletes should sing.

    LOVE this classic,

not a fan of current jimmmy barnes though...

voice and magic is gone :(

  • Let us all rise for the national anthum .....

  • hey c'mon. its the BEST FRIKIN AUSSIE SONG EVA!!!!!!!!!!

    but seriously our nation anthem.........

u can jus see the olymic swimmers standing there and khe sahn playing (NO)

so guys, show appreciation but quit saying it shud b our national anthem. its frikin awsome ok. but it should neva be our anthem.

  • classic

  • love this song!

  • classic aussie rock... lets see anyone argue with that!!!!!!!!!!!

  • your right !!!! no one could argue the fact that this is truly clasic aussie rock

  • I was in pearl harbor in February. We but it on at the bar on the base and the yanks had no idea what chisel was. We never got that cd back.

  • yeap that the americans for ya mate

  • lol - luv stikin it on! ;)

  • hahah watd they think of the song?

  • 20 million australians know the words to Khe Sanh, 1 million know the words to Advance Australia Fair

  • agree!!!!wots say we change it!!!

  • best band in the world****

  • Dunno who's Durdan? I've got PTSD and it sucks. lost my legs in a prick of an accident. love this song, I can see how much our troops went through, so I've got nothing to complain about.

  • He Durdan ...what's with the strippers and whores man? Clearly your appeal to women is like that of a dog turd on a summer day. What a fuckin knob ...

  • i reckon cold chisel's the best aussie band in history

  • Hang on, you're fogeting AC/DC. They're equally the greatest

  • To Mr. Durdan: no Sir, you're wrong, there's lots of good music coming from Australia. If you don't like it, just don't listen...

  • MrDurdan getting crabs? Proof of Karma I say

  • Hey DickKnowsBest,

Yeah you would have to wait in line, im sure there are many people who would love to just knock him out cold lol.

  • Hahahahaha Mr Durdan got crabs, as if you would admit it, that just proves that he can only get dirty skanky girls to have sex with lol.

  • I've been a fan of Aussie music since the '80s (Paul Kelly, Colin Hay, Mental As Anything, Divinyls--Hell, I even liked Pseudo Echo for about a week) and I can't believe I just discovered these guys. What do I buy first?

  • *Gasp*

You discovered --Hell before Cold Chisel. --Hell are so obscure. I think they only recorded one demo that didn't get any further than the singer's bedroom. Kidding...

With Chisel, try the compilation CD 'Chisel' and 'East'. Both CD's are the best introductions and will help you get used to their style quickly. All their albums are good, although I think the first Chisel album (which features this track) is the most bland of them all IMO. There's more Chisel on my other nzoz's.

  • that's funny man,try Doc Neeson, that's the best aussie has to offer. The Angels are still living legends

  • Razzo..........What is the matter with you? You say that you are all nice and all in OZ but then you are a very angry person. There should be a better person representing your country because I know it is a lovely place but I think you need some medication.

  • LOVE THIS SONG, It Is Awsome. . . anyone who says it is a crap song deserves a good kick in the HEAD, ROCK ON GUYS!

  • Bloody fantastic song - My dad went to Vietnam and I was born as soon as he got back. He is so screwed up...nigtmares etc

  • best song to came out australia.

  • This page is for comments about the song. Don't let some idiot get you stirred up. I have a friend in Australia and eat vegemite!! G'day!!

  • MrDurdant has blocked me because he couldn't handle the messages I was sending him and the comments I was leaving on his page. Pretty fucking pathetic, much like the 'boy' himself.

  • This Durdan fella is 100 out of 100 on my personal Wanker-o-meter.....

  • If you keep your eye on MrDurdant's profile. He deletes negative comments made about him.

He can dish it out, but he just cannot take it! lol

  • MrDurdan1776 does not represent americans, he's n arrogant turd that should b shot. not all r as ignorant and unaware of things as him

  • Yes, we know better than that, but it's sad that you feel you have to come to the defense of your people just because of cumstains like MrDurdant. Sorry mate, but we will give the arseholes that give a bad representation of your country the most difficult time they'll ever have to endure.

  • lol faggot aussies cant fight for shit. thats why they got fucked up in WW2

  • Much the same way you guys fucked up in Vietnam?

  • Long Tan - 108 Australian men. 1500-2500 Vietcong.

And we fuckin' thrashed them. We went home with 18 dead. They retreated after we'd killed 300 of them and injured many, many more.

Cant fight for shit, huh? I'd be interested in seeing 100 Americans take out TWENTY FIVE times their own forces.

  • one american can take out 1500.

    its called air support.

USA would crush fagstralia in war so suck a dick. all of u faggot aussie jiblits.

  • MrDurdant,

If what you're saying is true, than why is it that your government calls for British and Australian support?

  • Thats interesting, Im surprised you would be able to hit the enemy, your track record suggests your better at hitting your own troops and allies than you are at the enemy target.

  • @MrDurdan1776 This is to MrDurdan1776 One American to an other. Shut the f--k up. You are a total loser and you need your ass kicked. And I would gladly do that for you. Look me up In Seattle I would love to kick your ass. And if you where every so lucky to have Been with a Australian women I am sure she was the best woman you every had. I don't think a loser like you could get any women. An this AMERICAN HATES ALL YOU LOSERS THAT TALK ABOUT KILLING HUMAN BEINGS. Its not what this song is about

  • australian troops in Vietnam feared to call in artillery support from the yanks because most of the men maning the batteries were fucked up on heroine.....

you know why you're called Dough boys??? because yanks are always the last nation to 'RISE' .......

  • lol funny considering 300 aussie troops held off the full force of the japanese army on the kokoda trail during WW2, and the fact that australia has one of the best trained armed forces in the world

  • Fun fact, This song was written from an Australian soldiers point of view, The only involvement that Australian military forces had in the battle of Kha Sanh was close air support flying Canberra class bombers.

  • JIMMY!

  • you're a real piece of shit, aren't you. your mother didn't do the world any favours the day she forgot to flush you down the toilet after nine months of constipation. You mother should be shot in the head for giving birth to you... in fact, i think both your mother and father should be put out into a field and shot like the inbreeded animals that they are.

You are a small-minded little shit, you have no importance in this world and you're desperate for attention. Please kill your parents.

  • Everybody.... I do encourage to raid this guy with as much hate messages as possible. He has insulted many people on other Cold Chisel videos and quite frankly, I just dislike the little shit.

So, to all the Cold Chisel fans out there and the decent people who have a purpose in life, unlike MrDurant, please send hate mesages to him, because eventually he is going to hate it.

He thrives on the attention now, but it will get to him. So, let the hating begin!

  • Mate he is to dull!! He is so poor !! No Brain and balls!

    Cheers from Germany!

  • lol its funny how u say "to all the decent people out there who have a purpose in life, send hate mail" lol ur such a fuckn retard. thats as backwards as this gay music. lol u think ill hate it? lol i laugh and go out and get whores like ur mother. i spend 30 secs here u spend 30 minutues with ur comebacks. cold chesil sucks cold donkey dick. thats my opinion. like it or suck it.

  • MrDurdant, go back to sucking on your mother's dildo. We hate opionated Americans.

  • MrDurdant; stop being such a little bitch and leave Chisel to their fans. Don't go pissing them off just because you are in need of attention.

I've read most of nzoz's comments on his video uploads and in my mind, he comes across as a lot more intelligent and contributing to youtube than you have ever been. You've never attended a war nor have experience the story that this song details. Yet, you say it sucks and it's homosexual. I think you're just a spoiled brat who needs a kicking.

  • hey nzoz1978,

Cant believe Durdan is still on here trying to trash Cold Chisel, what a sad loser.

  • hahhahahaahaha your a fuckin pig mate, and i hunt pigs on the weekends so watch out cunt. WEEEEEE WEEEEEEEEEEERRRR. SQUEEL PIGGY!!!!!

  • lst time i looked australia was a free country , i dont agree but he has an oppinion let him share it and if you dont like it dont listen and if you really dont like it wjy flag it and draw attention to him ????

    1
