I know this is quite old but I thought I would post anyway:
The reason they are on grass (even though it's harder to dance on) is safety for practicing aerials. It puts the style out for the rest but then that is not the point. (that said I have never met them...) As far as marking the rythm, Jive, Swing, Rock'n'Roll and Rockabilly all 'mark the rythm' distinctly differently so I wouls say please ignore TomtenT. The aerials and fake-rials are done really well. Ihope these two are still dancing!
Didn't anyone tell the how to move more compact - don't let the arms sway around like they're out of control, keep your steps proper and controlled (which would be kinda hard on the grass), and mark the rythm SUBTLY with your whole body.
aww~~~ i swing dance... and i used to take classes (i'm a current high school student) and the class had like... people around their 30's -40's and it was aaawkwaard lol~ i wish i had a dance partner ^ ^
Check out your local colleges, and see if they have a swing or even ballroom club. Or even try starting your own, and see if any local (and I hate to say this, because I hate ballroom studios - most teach horrible styles of swing dancing, badly) dance studios and see if they'll volunteer their time to help you teach the club. Some groups will volunteer their time, or offer a low fee, like charge a couple of bucks per person, per lesson.
i love this song! my friends can play it in our schools junior band. I also had to do the jitterbug for a school play. you guys are much better though. ;)
