quest - find raid array information on my knowledge level explained technically yet also in plain english so it's easy enough to understand.

thank you linux, you have taught me so much yet again! ... stupid bills - keep me from buying toys and setting up ultimate systems... i now want to setup raid 10 for my file server and raid 0 with SSDs for my day to day pc... (if i lose everything on my day to day pc i really dont lose anything)
@Kole208 Raid is just either combining drives into one drive (raid 0) for much faster performance, or using one drive to back up the other drive simultaneously (raid 1), or doing both at the same time with 4 or more drives (raid 10)
@TheAustin3184 Yeah really. The prices went up like a week before I ordered parts for my new computer, so I had to buy a 250gb because I couldn't afford a 1tb.
How is Raid1 more failsafe than Raid 6 for 4 drives? Raid 6 allows that any 2 drives can go down. When you have Raid1 it is unrecoverable when the 2 drives with the same data crash.
@pistolpete2nd I think the way he said it just came out weird. He meant having a RAID 6 with 4 drives doesn't make much sense. 4tb for 2tb, you might as well use a RAID 1 with 2 2TB drives. RAID 6 is more fail-safe but with 4 drive array you'd be paying way too much for it (4 drives + a RAID card). Once you start expanding out to more than 4 drives you start making up the cost of the redundancy (5 x 1TB drives = 3TB)
I think for me RAID 1 would be the best. I feel if you want RAID you want it for the redundancy not the speed. I feel RAID 1 leaves the read/write speeds upto your drives instead of the array of data storage. Anything higher would be used for data centres and businesses and such where redudancy is the key point
why should you'r HDD break down anyways? :P I had a gaming computer for about 6 years now, same hardware, same HDD. Nothing had ever broke down, except one RAM chip that burned down under a LAN-party.... but that doesn't count ^^
@herrjonna2007 I can say the same about RAM, I've never had RAM go faulty on me... the fact is, HDD's are moving parts and if you've ever pulled one apart, they are very fragile, bump one while its reading something and the drive goes faulty... not just that but HDD's also store your important data on it! Besides, RAID setups are usually for business computers and servers, they can't afford to lose data from a faulty HDD, the only common RAID setups for home are RAID 0 for gaming
@snoopwoggywogg I know ^^ I have pulled one apart, made it a lantern xD anyways :D I know it's moving parts and I use the RAID 0 config. for my setup ;-) I was just sayin' My HDD have never broke down ^^
A technical correction: RAID 0 does not stripe on a bit by bit level. It does it on a block by block level. Block size is often 16k bytes or higher. Bit level striping is RAID 2, which is almost never used.
I have a 500GB. Just got 4 more. Could I create a quad stripe and get a program to transfer the data from my HDD to the quad stripe, and keep the original as a backup?
In addition I could periodically backup the info off the quad stripe onto the backup HDD to keep it up to date.
Or would it be better to just start from scratch and use all 5 drives in a RAID 5? If I did this I would have to get a RAID card, which I have no room for. Would also lose data.
By "Throw in a new drive" he means spend $100 on a new 1tb drive and then wait for it to be delivered or go pick it up from a store and then open up your computer and screw in the new devices and plug the cables in.
Can I set up two RAID Arrays. I have a bootable 240GB Revo x2 which is already set in RAID 0 which i use for my O.S.. I would also like to add four 3TB hard drives in RAID 10 for additonal storage. Does anybody know if thispossible?
Also, for RAID-5, software RAID is waaay better than chipset RAID, and is comparable to hardware RAID. No idea about Windows, but on Linux best option would be mdadm.
Linus would you recommend raid 5 for a gaming desktop machine? Or like you said just a file server or whatever, cause im gonna get a 4th HDD in a little bit, and i'm wondering if i can use raid 5 instead of raid 10, cause i get more space that way. I don't loose 2tb's i only loose 1tb....pls respond :D.
@RagingBubuli - two more points: it would cost some assload of money & not only would multiple drives have to fail but they'd have to be two in a pair.
I received a vibe that you didn't fully understand what you were explaining BUT you gave a pretty good explanation PLUS you provided a nice stepping stone in my comprehension process. Thanks for the video!
i never had raid before but i want to have my pc configure it that way. i just want to ask how will you going to know which hard drive is failing (in case its going to fail) in a raid setup???
Raid 0 is still been the best for me. I have never liked JBOD or raid 10. Good info for reference but Raid 0 should be good enought provided you use a formated back up drive.
Just a questione everybody- If I am transferring files to/between two PC's on my network through my router, is the speed limited to my shitty 1.5MBps Down/.6MBps up? or will it transfer at the full speed of my CAT5e cables?
Nice video. In terms of physical implementation, I have no doubts. I want to know from you if I can setup a RAID 10 in a Windows 2008 Server with the required 4 Hard Disks only using Disk Management. I know we can setup RAID 0, 1 and 5 only on Disk Management, but did not see anything related to RAID 10. Can u pls tell me?
Hmmm, missed this RAID coverage. Wish I'dve seen it before building my RAID0 drive.
If you want to be safe though I would just get a +3rd drive(depending on your RAID config) and use it for back up duty as long as it's the same size as your RAID config. Problem solved. You have a faster setup than a single drive and you have the safety of running in RAID1 w/o the loss in performance. BOOYAH!
RAID 10 is like Raid 1+0, but it can also be like 0+1. Depending on your needs, you can mirror then stripe (1+0) or you can stripe then mirror (0+1). Great intro to the topic though.
Transcribe the audio at 1:40.....and you will LOL!
"In grades six you this to drive with the storage capacity so you can see here with a four hundred sixty on the anti terror but its that doesnt even make any sense."
@HostileDonut RAID 0+1 requires minimum 3 disks, RAID 10 requires 4. Other than that RAID 10 has better data protection, especially when you're running more then 4 drives.
@TheLoon508 you don't i dont THINK you can put a HHD and an SSD, if you can it' useless because you'd end up with 128GB of space as it uses the SMALLEST drive as the.....max amount.... if you will
@TheLoon508 None. But I'd get a 500GB external drive (at least, though drives are cheap as chips these days so get it as big as you can afford) as backup.
The time has come for Free energy to be revealed ,But the Big corporations spend millions to ensure that information does not spread to the masses,Check this free energy magnet motor at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Free yourself!
i built an enterprise network with x5 servers with 6 drives each on RAID 5, after waiting all night to format the raids they all crashed..... after 2 weeks of this i discovered the intel raid cards firmware had a known issue with raid 5 and needed an update to support raid 5... i hate raid 5 now regardless.... i <3 my SAN array :D
One question, or maybe I just need some advice. I have a 1TB HDD and I wanted to buy another one (might be already full of porn :P) and perhaps make a RAID 0 array, but now I see that it might be a good idea to buy two 500GB HDDs, put them in RAID 0 for 1TB (and store the OS and installations there) and have my 1TB HDD for additional storage and keep it safer (I dont want lo lose all my dear porn :P). I would apreciate sharing your opinions about this. Thanks.
we run raid5 in a dedicated external box with 8 drives and never had a problem with two drives failing near each other. the link to the machine is a pci-e SAS card and seems to benchmark about 240MB/s on reads, using LSI 3801e.
Well, now i know I'm heading in the right direction.

biulding first pc puting windows 7 64 bit on 64gb ssd and 500gb for storage what raid do i need to put it in to
TheLoon508 1 year ago
@TheLoon508 you don't i dont THINK you can put a HHD and an SSD, if you can it' useless because you'd end up with 128GB of space as it uses the SMALLEST drive as the.....max amount.... if you will
camdened123456 1 year ago
@TheLoon508 None. But I'd get a 500GB external drive (at least, though drives are cheap as chips these days so get it as big as you can afford) as backup.

Does anyone know where to find a good setup tutorial on RAID 10?
themanthatrocks985 1 year ago
i built an enterprise network with x5 servers with 6 drives each on RAID 5, after waiting all night to format the raids they all crashed..... after 2 weeks of this i discovered the intel raid cards firmware had a known issue with raid 5 and needed an update to support raid 5... i hate raid 5 now regardless.... i <3 my SAN array :D

excellent info... one question, do you still need to use identical drives when building RAID's?
