I think it has to do with the American two-party system. If you only have one competitor, it becomes not only important to make yourself look good, but also to make your competitor look bad.
The consequence of that is that you use opportunities to make your competitor look bad by taking quotations out of context, or try to create differences on issues when in fact you both argue for the same thing, and other lies.
This is why I'm strongly in favor of a multi-party democracy such as ours.

If Bachman(sp) and her Republican cohorts want to continue bringing up guys like Wright and Ayers, who they've argued are anti-American, and then try to make a link between them and Barack Obama, how can they not be saying that Obama, by "sharing space" with these "evil" people, has anti-American views?

2006 - George Allen's "macaca" comment. Not only did he lose the race, he lost all possibility of a future presidential run. Maybe he would have been the Republican nominee instead of Mccain had he not said this.

They LIE right in your face and they think they can get away with it (in fact, they often do because Americans are so badly informed). In my country, things are so different. Example: recently, one member of parliament (Wijnand Duyvendak) recently confessed to some illegal activities in the 1980s, something everyone already completely had forgotten about. As a consequence, he was forced to resign.

(part 2) Duyvendak was not forced to make this confession at all. He decided to write about it in his autobiography, and he felt he was morally compelled to confess.
Of course, not every politician is the same, but on average, I would certainly argue that politicians in my country have a higher moral integrity than US politicians. As a result, Americans trust their politicians much less than the Dutch trust theirs.

I think it has to do with the American two-party system. If you only have one competitor, it becomes not only important to make yourself look good, but also to make your competitor look bad.
The consequence of that is that you use opportunities to make your competitor look bad by taking quotations out of context, or try to create differences on issues when in fact you both argue for the same thing, and other lies.
This is why I'm strongly in favor of a multi-party democracy such as ours.

I'm with you, though for what it's worth, it's sort of the same thing that brought down Dean in 2004. It's funny, though, because McCain's man Steve Schmidt tried really hard to run an "MTV" style campaign--changing channels every 15 seconds. But it didn't work. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter "B" into her face, Richard said.
