Whoa! my hair does exactly the same thing when i flat iron - even before i finish the ends are curling up.... nightmare! Ive given up now... in May 2012 will be 2 years natural so i will get it flat ironed at a salon and watch what they do!! I must do a natural video...lol!
@Pretoriafly Because not everyone is interested in slapping someone else's hair on their head. Being natural does not mean that you have to give up straight hair. That's the great thing the ability to have both and heat damage is something everyone natural or relaxed needs to be concerned about. You can even heat damage human hair weave.
@LBargainBeauty: To add, I never said “straight, natural-looking *human* hair weave”. I personally can’t stomach the thought of wearing someone else’s hair on my head. But anyway, it seems to me that you like versatility. I like it too—I’m always putting my natural hair in different styles. But my question was sincere—why risk burning your own hard work? Why not just put on a wig/weave instead? That seems more logical to me. That’s as versatile as flat-ironing. Even more so, actually.
@Pretoriafly I just don't see the point in a hair journey if the end result is not being able to enjoy your hair. Why strive for beautiful hair if the only way to enjoy ALL of it's options is to slap a weave or wig on it? If we went through life not enjoying it because of the possible "risks" it would be a waste of air in my opinion. I think the same is true for our hair, heat damage is a possibility not a given. If we keep relying on fake hair when will we ever enjoy our own hair in ANY style?
I don't know much about weaves since I don't wear them myself, so I was thinking maybe synthetic wigs/weaves? Either way, I still stand by what I posted-- I'm not against flat ironing, but it genuinely puzzles me when women who worry about getting heat damage flat iron their hair a lot (I'm not pin-pointing mstanish1 in any shape or form). For example, ladies on YouTube & hair forums who've lost their progress because of damage. I personally would rather damage the weave/wig than my own hair.
@Pretoriafly And I think the key is they flat iron A LOT. Natural isn't for everyone and some do it for the wrong reasons. If you obviously prefer straight hair so much that you are constantly using heat then natural isn't for you although I don't think this was Taren's case. You can do one too hot pass and get heat damage but you can also heat damage relaxed hair the key is learning to do it properly. I have never had heat damage when I was relaxed or natural.
@LBargainBeauty: But that was the point in my first comment. Maybe I should've worded it better. I don't understand why women flat iron their natural hair *a lot*. Lol, like I said I'm not against flat ironing or any kind of heat. I use them too, but I don't know why some girls do it so much that they eventually have to get their hair cut. But anywho, I think we shouldn't take up too much space with this. If you want to continue, you can message me. *shrug*
San Diego is where it's at!...I didn't realize you ever came down...we should connect some time. Jagged Edge is coming to 4th & B on May 12th if you like them...Anyhow, I know SD treated you right! and Happy Belated Birthday!!
you needed a hotter iron. my hair would laugh at 235. I usually do a higher setting (no higher than 400) w/ protectant for the first and then to maintain it i use a low (2 something) setting after like 3 days. then its time to wash and i am like F that crap for about 6 months. I cannot stand spending more than 20 min on my hair haha and i can spend like 3 hours flat ironing
If you want a professional flat iron and you are ok with spending around $140 I would highly recommend the Karmin G3 Salon Pro, it heats up to 450f with temperature control, dual voltage, tourmaline ceramic plates with rounded edges which makes it great for also curling your hair. Also has a 3 year warranty. If you do look at other irons make sure to stay away from irons with painted plates (colored plates) these can damage your hair.
my hair is natural and has VERY tight coils. I've had to hot comb and flat iron my hair in order to get it to where I'm satisfied. I use the hot n silky flat iron, with a remington blow dryer and a gold n electric hot comb. This seems like a lot but I do a LOT of deep conditioning and use a good amount of grapeseed oil for heat protectant with Hask Straightening solution. I do this every few months when I trim my ends. I got bored with it and washed it out 3 days later lol. reverted fine!!!
My hair is kinky/curly and my hair looks like yours just from a blow dry. When i use my Jilbere flat iron and do small sections it comes out bone straight, lots of body and bounce, but it depends on the flat iron. Higher heat gives you straighter results, unfortunately..
ahh .. that's why it did not get very straight, the temp people use is a lot higher (375 to 450 degrees). But, I would be chicken to do that to my hair - Happy BD :)
all u gotta do is brow dry with shea butter then u have to get a flat iron thst goes past 300 degrees for ur hair to be bone straight and the way u really want it without getting heat damage...... trust me it's gonna work.
Thank you so much for your honesty and showing the frustrations of flat ironing kinky hair. This is exactly how my hair looks when I attempt to flat iron to see how much growth I have had. I stop doing that because I am too afraid of heat damage and do not want to start all over! So far, I am about 8-9 months into my journey and want to retain as much length as possible and keep my hair healthy. Your twist out looks great and so pretty!! Please do a video on it! Again, love your hair!
Did you blow dry? I tried to flat iron my hair twice since I've been natural without blow drying first and it always puffed back to it's natural state.
What type of heat protectant did you use on your hair. If you didn't use one that could explain the burnt smell. Also what I do before I straighten my hair (when it was long the first time I went natural) was blow it out using cool air. It helps get thick hair straighter in the beginning. I divided my hair into 6-8 sections and after I dried a section I would break it in half and twist it up. When I was done I would apply the heat protectant and then straighten with the flat iron.
It's been almost a year since I flat ironed my hair and when I did a month ago, I tried to rush through as well (my hair has grown tremendously!) I learned to take my time. I also use a FHI that goes up to like 435, although I don't go to it's highest, I usually go up to 3 something. There is also a YouTuber, Brittanynic16. she goes into detail about heat training our hair. I think you could have gotten similar straight results if you only used the blow dryer. The flat-twist out looks great!!!
@exoticeyes32 OIS. MY hair probably didn't get straight because my iron doesn't get that hot. But thats ok. I didn't want to risk heat damage anyways. I had it before and its not pretty...
That is exactly how my 4b/c hair is like when I flat iron it. I attempt to straighten it and it puffs up. I seriously want to find a method that will allow my hair to straighten without losing my coils when I wash my hair.
@Prime1018 We have the same hair type and I find that when I part ridiculously small sections and use a rat tail comb to genlty comb thru and then guide the flat iron, my hair gets really straight and stays that way, but it'll poof up if I don't wrap it. Maybe you should try a saran wrap? If you find something that works, please let me know :)
@hwiley09...You're right. When I used to flat iron frequently, I used Saran Wrap, and wrapped my hair every night and it stayed straight for a little over a week. I also did small sections too. It already took a long time when my hair was shorter. Now that my hair is longer, I am waaay too impatient to do it. Your method is on point :).
@Prime1018 You need a good blow dryer, good flat iron, & good heat protector. I have 4b/4c hair & use to get the same results. Once I purchased a new flat iron, the Jilbere Palladium Ceramic Iron which goes up to 465, it looked a lot better! I also use One n' Only Argan Oil or Silk Elements Megasilk Heat Protection Spray before I blow dry & before flat ironing. I use the flat iron on 400. Because our hair is thicker or courser, it can take a lot more heat than finer textures. Hope this helps!

I know this is wayyy late but do you use the chase method to flat iron? That with just a little more heat will give you better results.

I don't understand why some women flat iron their natural hair, and then worry about risking heat damage.
Why not just wear a straight, natural-looking weave? Wouldn't that be easier? ^_^
