DP's were in OS division, OPs Dept from 75 through 77 when I was the Division Officer on Fat Albert. They sure have changed that rig since those days, removing the missile and gun mounts, adding all sorts of stuff on deck. It's longer than it was, too. And there were no women on board except for one who wrote our computer program who'd come out now and then to trouble shoot it.
What's the deck below after mooring called? When I was assigned to her, it wasn't there, of course it was added during dry dock at some point along with being outfitted with side arms, and having the missile pods and the 3 inch .50 cals removed. I used to stand GQ in the port turret loading the hopper. Also being outfitted with updated life rafts.
I was on that deployment. They have me in the video loading the .50 cal machine gun. The best part of that trip was the port visits to the Canary Islands and Dakar, Senegal
I served on the MTW from July 98 to Jan 2003. Got my ESWS on there. Like anyone else, I could go on there this very day and I would know exactly where everything is. I could go to it pretty much blindfolded.
Wow have things changed, I served here from 87-90 when it was home ported in the states and referred to as building 20. Great duty, great people on an awesome ship.
I missed sailing into NY Harbor on Fleet Week 86 cause I was TAD at a NAVMAC V5 OP school in Maryland but I was off that weekend so I came home that weekend and met up with the guys here in NY...
Hey t128ny...What a different Mount Whitney back then huh? I served as an RM3 with ships company on the Mount Whitney from 86 - 88. The ship has changed so much since, I got to visit her on one of the fleet week visit in NY, probably sometime early 2000. How it's all changed....from cable tv, phone capability, e-mails and of course women onboard. We had vhs movies to watch...
I was a DP in OPS Div. I was going to try to make it to that Fleet week but had to work. Were you onboard for Fleet Week 86 for the re-dedication of the Statue of Liberty?

My old home from 1980 to 1983. I sure do miss her. And from the website, she's still LCC 20.

Served on Mt Whitney 85 - 88. Was a Forward Look-out, on the flight teams as a "Hot Suit", and 1st loader on the starboard 3in 50cal gun mount.
