if i run ubuntu on usb WITHOUT INSTALL it,is all the change about the OS will disapear?such as installing some program like PHOTOSHOP,install the NVIDIA-DRIVER for my display card....?
Your flash drive may turn to junk pretty quickly (6 months maybe). I would recommend buying a USB hard disk instead of a flash drive, because flash drives are not designed for this sort of load.
if is was to do this and download a piece of software or program or file, would it install on to the usb instead of the computers main hard drive and then be useable every time i boot Ubuntu from the usb ... and also what was the name of the music in the video?
Ubuntu has still long way to go and if you want to switch exclusively to Ubuntu, you have to make a list of your expectations (like what programs do you used on Windows and are there good replacements on Ubuntu?) and search the web to find out if Ubuntu can fulfill your needs.
There is really no simple answer to your question...
For some reason my sisters old pc won't let me change the administrator account so I will be using this until I decide to put linux or windows xp oh it?
I did everything you said on the video, and when i restarted my laptop (DELL btw) and got as far as the "Installer boot menu" then i chose "Run Ubuntu persistently"...but that was it, i couldn't go any further, in fact i'm getting a message saying:
@blu3civic Hmm, I'm sorry I haven't seen something like that. Try to Google it the error message. It came up with some suggestions. BTW did you installed it on USB flash drive or USB harddrive? If the first one, try to repeat installation proces. What Dell laptop do you have?
@cynthiarosemarch: Hi there. Sorry but don't really understand the question.. You just use and edit the Ubuntu however you want and it will keep the settings, not like when u r using Live CD which revert to default as it doesn't have the persistant partition. Here all the settings are written to persistant partition.
Anyway, stay tuned and soon I will make another video (finally) but first I must finish my website... bye
Thanks man. Everybody needs persistance. I tried to use grub4dos along with the grug loader gui to modifer the mbr on the stick. It never worked, not even with the mem-- tag
I'M SO GLAD you linked me to something pre-compiled. I compare what I did wrong.
@jfvnsdjkncv: As far as I understood when I checked Unetbootin, it allows you to create LIVE USB, which means it is like LIVE CD - can't save settings and install programs. Procedure in this video will create possibility to install software and apply changes to system and they will be kept.
Yup, don't be fooled. This method is by far superior. Livecd's are great but not being able to save your wifi settings, or any setting at all makes you frustrated.
This is a full 1:1 installation of ubuntu and is awesome to just have around
@TheWorldOfMeh: You can install anything into Ubuntu than. If your question is if you can still use flash drive to store files, the answer is yes. But those files won't be visible in the Ubuntu. I have it like that. Have Ubuntu on flash drive and I also created folder on the drive called DATA where I keep other stuff. Working without problems.
Yes shutyrhole, it is hippo USB ;) Honestly, I don't know where you can get one. My girlfriend got it from Poland but I couldn't find anything like that back home in Slovakia, nor in Ireland. So I presume, you have to try some Polish website. Maybe try to go to ALEGROdotPL and search for TRACER USB...
Thanks for the help with installing it to my flash drive, but how do I get my computer to boot back into windows? I am running windows vista home premium edition. Help!
Hi xthedrlovex. If you really installed it onto flash drive and didn't mess up your harddrive, than just turn off the computer, remove FD and after starting computer again, it should boot to Vista. If not, maybe check if it is booting from harddrive.
Hmmm. What system are you using to format the flash drive? As far as I know Windows offer just FAT32 formating for flash drive so I haven't experimented with others. But I think this procedure will not work for other formats.
Actually on Pendrivelinux website there is written that you need FAT32 flash drive, so...
AFAIK It can be FAT16 or FAT32. I haven't tried an NTFS drive for this, but when attempting similar projects on an NTFS drive, I found it gave errors writing the boot sector (when you run the bootsect.bat file), and the drive wasn't bootable. I would use FAT32, since it is better than FAT16, though.
This post made me laugh! Mostly due to the fact that music is just few bars of my improvisation especially for this video :D I didn't want to distract anybody with it. Maybe just drive crazy, but not distract ;)
I see I recall some memories for you... ;) But honestly you should start watching some better productions...
I used VMware instead. I did this with my 4Gb flash drive gave 2.5gb partition for Ubuntu and another partition 1.2Gb for my files. also did with external USB HDD 4Gb partition for ubuntu and the rest for my files. Cool portable OS btw.
I used VMware instead. I did this with my 4Gb flash drive gave 2.5gb partition for Ubuntu and another partition 1.2Gb for my files. also did with external USB HDD 4Gb partition for ubuntu and the rest for my files. Cool portable OS btw.
If you have VMware, just delete the HDD and plug in your Flash Drive before booting or starting the Ubuntu Installer. If you want to do this on your host pc, just disable/disconnect your HDD's in the BIOS or physically disconnect them so Ubuntu doesn't mess them up with grub, then plug in your USB Drive b4 installing Ubuntu. Ubuntu can partition any storage device even if it is removable or not, which you can't do in Windows.
Then, when you start your computer just set your USB Disk as first boot device. For me this method is better than using "Create USB Startup-Disk" which is simply gonna copy all the disc contents to your FDD which is messy when browsing the FAT32 part. Unlike in the method I used, only the FAT32 part can be read by Windows and the Ext3 FS unable to be read by Windows so you have a nifty Flash Drive with partition. Sorry can't upload a video I have terrible upload rate.
Cool. So u say that u disabled virtual HDD in VMware, connected Flash Drive (that was recognized also in VMware and than became the only storage place 4 Ubuntu to recognize), than u installed Ubuntu standard way, right?
Did u use Ubuntu CD ISO image mounted to VMware to install from?
This looks also like a good solution and probably doable on VirtualBox too. And that way u can easily "hide" linux partition for Windows not to mess up with it.
That's one way to put it. Ubuntu doesn't really care as long as you install it on a storage device. The same thing also goes with VirtualBox altough I don't know how people were able to mount USB Drives onto VirtualBox, I'm quite used to VMware but the logic is the same between VMware and VBox. I used the ISO image since btw, it reads faster than any CD drive. Yes, in this way the Ubuntu FS is safe from browsing by Windows.
I tried to check you computer but was not able to find out any information. The thing is that when you are using this method on old machines, they don't necessarily need to support booting from USB...
Hmmm... I have to try it. I didn't try to install it on USB hard drive. Actually i think if you install it even on USB flash drive, you cannot access this flash drive from Ubuntu (you cannot create a folder there and copy files into it). So there is probably no need to install it on external HDD, instead use flash drive AND external HDD. But as I said, I will check and let you know.
Hi Joseph, I will be honest with you, I am not Ubuntu profesional. Actually just amazed beginner ;)
I haven't seen that problem before, but I would advice you first to try to run the MAKEBOOT.BAT file as administrator on USB drive and see if this helps. If not, try to reinstall the Ubuntu on USB...
omg i love you i have been trying to find the method of doing this on 9.04 for ages! BTW PLEASE tell me will this take away my windows? and if it doesnt how would i access windows when running linux, like after im done with linux. please HELP ME!!!!!
This will not take your windows away, at least not the ones of your house. Kidding. You can safely boot to Ubuntu from USB and after work just shut the computer down (or restart) and remove (or even leave in) the flash drive. Computer will boot as normaly - to Windows.
I'm dual booting vista and ubuntu 8.04, both of them are 32bits, but im scared to try. Btw i tried everything in the video, seems to be working, except booting from the USB part, still scared to try it.

No need to worry. I trippleboot ;) Vista, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04 and have also this USB. Everything works.
You need to be careful and type in the correct drive letter of USB to make it bootable.
If something goes wrong, you can try to repair with SuperGrubDisk.
Good luck!
