nanceio is right and wrong at the same time you need to have a very big level in sking but if you never flew a paraglider or a parachute and you think your gonna be ok with your skiing level you really should make sure you have a very good health insurance

The people who teach this in Samoens are in their 50's and have been paragliding for 20 years. When I did the beginners class I was the youngest of 6 - and I'm 40.

OK. Time to settle this! I've just got back from skiing in Flaine where I had a four-hour Speed Riding taster session with the Samoens Parapente school.

Point 1: THEY ARE PARAGLIDERS! Not parachutes, and not kites.

Point 2: It is fun, fast (30mph takeoff speed) and, safe and smooth. Try it! You won't regret it.

Point 3: It is NOT a "young dude's sport! The instructors are in their 50s - 60s with 15 yrs+ paragliding experience.

Hi!

SpeedRiding wings are quite different from paragliders! There are small paragliders: Google for "Nova Shockwave" or "Nova Ibex" to find small paragliders. (12sqm to 15sqm)

SpeedRiding wings are somewhere between parachutes and paragliders. Some are closer to parachutes and some closer to paragliders. But a small paraglider, like the Nova Shockwave is definitely not suited for speedriding. One reason is, that the performance (glide ratio) is way too big.

That sport has many names: ground launching, speed riding, ski flying, etc.

Balance is no point in the air.

Clip on systems can replace/ strengthen handfunction or think something out for yourself. Exercise arm/ hand function.

Not like any kiteboarding kite I've seen. I believe they are small sports paragliders or parachutes due to the bridle arrangement, wing profile and harness arrangements. See my other South American videos for guy using a 6m2 one to jump from a plane!

Re: no such things as "speed paragliding". This is how the sport began. Mountaineers flying down with skydiving canopies. The wings in this video probably are jump 'chutes, although paraglider manufacturers are now making (uncertified) wings designed specifically for this purpose = called Speed Riding/Speed Gliding.

They're definately not Paragliding canopies... one of them is using a PdF Springo, and another looks like a Sabre. Both of which are skydiving canopies.

A few Speedflying wings are starting to come onto the market, but look very different to these.

They have fewer, larger cells like a parachute, though. PG's have many more, smaller cells... and are at least 22 square meters. I've heard of a 16 square meter paraglider, but I've never heard of anything smaller.  I'd call 'em parachutes.
