great Horse. You need a little luck to win the triple crown. There are so many things that can go wrong. I think the Triple Crown is a bit overrated. Many great horses didnt win it. Including Skip Away, Man O'War, Spectacular Bid, Cigar and many more. Real Quiet almost won it and i dont think he was that great a horse.
This horse is a poor Kentucky Derby showing away from being compared to Secratariat. That Kentucky Derby haunts me to this day. I wasn't born yet when Secratariat won his Triple Crown and I was sure Point Given could do it. I hit the Exacta in the Preakness and the Tri in the Belmont b/c I never gave up on Point Given. In my mind, this is the 2nd best Belmont performance behind Secratariat's.
the only reason he lost the derby was because he was up too close to that BLISTERING pace...every horse that was up front in the early fractions was COOKED at the top of the stretch. stevens even said he had no idea the pace was so fast, or else he would have kept him back further.
Point Given had one of the best 3 year old seasons of the last 30 years. 5 grade 1 wins, a grade 2, with only the Derby a blemish. Dont agree pace beat him in the Derby; Congaree was much closer to that pace and still ran 3rd, 6.5 lengths ahead of PG. For whatever reason, the Derby wasn't PG's day. Too bad he was injured before the Breeders Cup. Imagine him w/ Tiznow, Sakhee, and Albert!
One of the best horses to not win the triple crown ever! Period! If you ever got to see this horse in real life it was unbeliveable! The biggest most "ripped" horse I have ever seen. Just a monster. He had a real weird demeanor too. Like an intimidator. In the Derby the track and the pace just wasn't the horse for the course that day.
how come kents ride on Real Quiet was so bad, when basically point given did the same thing, only point given kept going, thats horse racing, but its ridiculous the amount of ridicule that Kent D. takes for the real quiet ride. Whos to say Monarchos wasnt going to run down point given for moving early?? He just didn't. and Victory Gallop did.
Can't agree with Real Quiet in that list. Delete him, and add Sunday Silence, and I'd agree. SS went on the win the BC Classic, and Horse of the Year in 1989.
Thanks for posting this, I really think this horse was underrated! It seems the horses that win the LAST 2/3rds of the Triple Crown are forgotten much quicker than the Greats who win the FIRST 2/3rds, which is sad. I got to see him at Three Chimneys and he is still spectacular. Video on my channel if anyone wants to see him there. :)
Anyone who says Point Given didn't like Churchill is nuts. Stevens is quoted saying he loved it when he flew up on Macho Uno in the BC Juvenile the year before that. I was there that day and the dirt was packed down hard as a rock and blazing fast; records were broke all day. Monarchos had a super set up and got it done. It's all good though, everyone knows who the real horse was that year.
Should have won the Derby, then you could talk about how great this horse was..Nothing memorable stands out about this horse, except to diehard fans..Nice stretch run though...
Easily the best horse in the TC races that year. Monarchos win in the derby was a pure insane pace setup. When the races were run with more normal early pace and better tactical rides from Stevens Monarchos was not within hailing distance of the son of Thunder Gulch.
I agree with you, but you do have to at least give Monarchos credit for winning the Derby at his own pace. That's horse racing. The favourite doesn't win nearly as much anymore.
Stevens, being the veteran he was, should have known to back off more in the Derby. It would have been great to see them battle it out to the wire, if only he had shown better judgement. Pure jockey error.
Point Given was indeed the best of that year, without a doubt.

Too bad the Derby had the pace of a downhill turf race at Santa Anita. Or Point Given may have put the Triple Crown drought to bed.

All this chatter about Stevens on this ride, watch him win the BC Mile on War Chant and get back to me.

There should have been no reason why this horse shouldn't have won the Triple Crown.

Agreed, he was amazing to watch... just a really amazing runner. Wish he could have come trough in the Derby...

nobody could have beaten monarchos at that derby though

well Monarchos did run the 2nd fastest derby of all time. Congaree set the pace and ran his heart out to be 3rd.

Afleet Alex. Probably one of the best ever. Real bad trip in the Kentucky Derby otherwise he would have been a Triple Crown winner.

I also would like to add Afleet Alex to the list of best horses not to win. His Belmont win was huge, and the Baltimore win says it all.

Point Given = the horse in the 2000's that should have won the Triple Crown.
Best 3 horses since Affirmed to not win the Triple Crown:
Spectacular Bid
Real Quiet
Point Given

Looks like a lot more than 11 lengths to me.
If only he'd been on this form in the Derby.
Dibsthe1 4 years ago
His official past performance chart lists the winning margin at 12 1/4 lengths.
The quick Derby pace seemed to be his undoing, and I don't think he cared much for the going at Churchill either.
