I have 10 chinchillas! First i got 3 chinchillas and then i got 4 more. I feel bad for the mom, she had 7 kids but now she wont have any more chinchillas which is good for her ^^

Adorable. I got now three chinchillas. Our kit was also born accidentally as we were told both chins were females. Not even the vet could tell that the female was pregnant while she stayed there over night in an emergency. She bled and we did not know why. About a week or so later I noticed she wasn't coming out and went to check on her and so a little thing moving. I was shocked for hours. Had one live kit and bits of another (guess why she bled) and he is a gorgeous, naughty little dude!!!

you really shouldnt breed, if you dont know the exact background of both chinchillas, male and female.

some have a genetic defect, if both mother and father have it, the kits are often born dead or even the mother dies from intoxication.

@BlackFays It's not really a genetic defect, it's just how the genetics of chinchillas work. There are a few combinations (ie: white to white) that contain a possible lethal factor if bred together. This means the kits, or both the mom and the kits will die. This shouldn't scare anyone though because besides breeding white to white, the other possible lethal combinations all consist of rare color mutations that only experienced breeders would even have (sapphire, or touch of violet).

@paytoncrystal only EXPERIENCED breeders should breed chinchillas. PLEASE DO NOT DO IT. they have to be taken care of like babies and you have to devote every night to them (staying awake). You also have to provide separate cages / food/ toys / and time to EACH ONE. NEVER breed a chinchilla unless you are a professional !

Wanna hear my chinchilla story?

sunday evening. My mother brought home a chinchilla. It was something like a epic party. Yeah. I felt like blessed. We had a great 7 years with that chinchilla. One day, i came back from school and i was like A NEW CHINCHILLA! YEAH. He was a boy. So after 5 days they "made" babies. Sad part starts here. One day he died. He lived around 2 months with us. That was HARDEST moment in my life when he died. Now we have baby chin :)

Chinchillas are best thing in my life.

@paytoncrystal My Chin's didn't get along at first but i did the same thing chewie007 suggest's..keep them in seperate cages but still close together so they can smell and talk to each other. - It might take a little while...it took mine about 4-5 months to get used to each other..now they get along great and live in the same 'big' cage together.=)

usually chinchillas have no problems during birth, most first-time owners don't realize their chins are pregnant until they give birth. i think the difficult part is making sure the kits don't get into any trouble (they can squeeze through cage bars less than an inch wide) and that the parents get along. mine raised their two litters together just fine.

Yeah, I remember my first baby chinchilla. I was up until 4 am babysitting the thing--kept getting out of the cage! Eventually I gave up, blocked off all exits from the room, and went to sleep... Jesus, it was its first night alive and it was already crawling all over the place. xD

Some chins just don't get along. One thing you could try is to seperate them. Either in two cages, or by creating a divider in the cage. Either way, try to make it so they can interact (place the cages next to each other, or use a divider with small holes in it) without chasing or biting each other. Keep them like this for a month and then try to rejoin them. If that doesn't work... well, sometimes they just don't get along. If they are attacking each other, you need to seperate them.

breeding is very dangerous. We had the kits by accident, as the pet store we purchased our first Chin from told us it was a male. We did not find out that she was a she until she had the kits.

Yes, they do tend to poop wherever they are, but their poo is dry and easy to clean up. As far as peeing goes, they tend to prefer to pee in the same few spots, so if they get used to a cage, they probably will not pee when outside the cage. The real thing to worry about is their tendency to chew on stuff, especially electrical cords. You have to "chinchilla-proof" a room before you let them out in it.

Yea..My two Chinchillas Solar and Eclipse are lil poop mechines.. She was once over top of him on the 3rd floor, him on the 1st..We was feeding him a treat and then next thing we knew she pissed on his head and pooped on him as well..He took off and dove into his dust bath rubbing his head deep into it..He came out with a shiny gray forehead lol.

They can be really social and since they're not like dogs or cats sometimes they dont get out of their cage often and they get really bored and lonely so it's reeeeally good to have a pair. Every chinchilla i've rescued came in a pair.
