  • a hit. Both ERA and FIP are flawed statistics, I think a new, better stat will eventually be invented.

  • The thing is, FIP doesn't counter in pitchers who are better at drawing hits that DO go to their fielders, even if their fielders are turrible. There's a huge different between a hot grounder that goes past Yuniesky that Alexei would get and a slower dribbler that goes straight to both player to make the out. The pitcher directly influences whether the contact is strong or poor. Furthermore, some pitchers are better at preventing line drives, which is the easiest way for a hitter to get (cont'd)

  • We already moved on to xFIP and SIERA, lol

  • AND THEN PUNCH EM IN THE FACE!!!!

  • Ohh great. Just when I thought baseball couldnt get nerdier enough. LOL

  • Great video, but I think XFIP is a better indicator of future performance.

  • Great video man. Good job.

  • Sorry, I'm not seeing this stat as being that relevant or necessary. It does make sense but how much does a SS with a little less range, luck, umpires, etc, come into play versus a mediocre or bad pitcher simply getting shelled by line drives, gappers, and doubles off the wall? So those aspects aren't reflective of someone's talent because it includes the other stuff that happens sometimes? Why not just check the ERA, WHIP, and K/9 to get a more complete pitcture instead?

  • @sbh1215 Excellent points sbh. The beauty of FIP is that it actually takes elements of each of those stats -- the homers from ERA, the walks from WHIP, the strikeouts from K/9, and then combines them neatly into a single statistic -- and one that has less noise from defensive variations.

  • SM is nonsense. Created by those to simply look at baseball a different way. That is all ther there is to it.....and yes I understand baseball very well having played it for years and I also understand statistics well since I took advanced college courses in it. It is also a fad and all fads eventually die.

I don't mind if someone likes it, I do mind when told by some of these people that it is more reliable guage of a player or pitcher. I simply know better. Period.

  • @rickydevil32 I would contend that -- given how the Red Sox, Yankees, Rays, A's, and a multitude of other teams have embraced statistics and sabermetrics -- it is no more a fad than was adding minor league teams in the early 1900s.

However, if you simply know better, then I must defer to you, but it must also mean you know better than Andrew Friedman, Theo Epstein, and Brian Cashman. If you feel comfortable with that assertion, then I advise you write a book, immediately!

  • @rickydevil32 Why wouldn't you accept something new that better shows how a player performs? You sound like a person who sees people driving a car, has the money to drive a car, and still rides a horse.

  • My man!! Thanks for the shoutout!

  • @vorosmc I'M NOT WORTHY!!!

  • Bradley, this is your english teacher. Great video. And in your description it's affect, not effect.

  • @whitmisti Argh! Typos, my nemesis, you never fail to rear your wicked head!

  • Forever Alone

  • voice is annoying as fuck

  • @MrWoozy15 I agree. :)

  • the pitcher looks like fidel....

  • I think it's still not cool to be a sabermetrician.

  • @BSB19 Ha! Yeah, I -- and my wife, who shakes her head forlornly whenever she sees my clicking away on a spreadsheet in my poorly lit office -- think so too. I was just kidding.

  • Saw this on HardBallTalk. Enjoyed it. I'm just getting into sabermetrics so stuff like this is a great help. Even the dragons.

  • @flyercam2 Wow! HBT picked it up? I'm all sorts of honored. Thanks for stopping by!

  • Saw this on BtB, then Calcaterra. Great job :)

  • @jetpac7890 Thanks jetpac! I'm glad you liked it!

  • Excellent!

  • Great stuff - very amusing. Hopefully Clay Buchholz hangs onto his good-luck-dragon for 2011!

  • Fucking. Awesome. I saw this at Drunk Jays Fans. :)

  • @soydevon I'm totally with you there. I use BBRef all the time, but have to calculate my own FIP and wOBA. I've talked to the head honcho over there a little, and it sounds like he has those in the works. Hopefully they'll have FIP and wOBA sooner rather than later.

  • @homebodywithalaptop wOBA's a much more fun acronym than OPS too.

  • Fantastic. Saw this through Tango's blog.

  • @belichickscameracrew I'm glad you liked it! I can't believe Tango even came across it. I'm suddenly very self-conscious!
