They don't try to take a direct role unless needed and coordinated with Colombian officials because it is Colombia and the responsibility of Colombians, who I think are doing a great job. You know, they don't kidnap people against their will. Ingrid Betancourte was a vocal supporter of the FARC in the early 90's in Basque country, France.

She volunteered to be taken "hostage", so that the Government would pay the FARC to release them, thus giving the FARC more money to obtain weapons and food.

Anyone who is "kidnapped" by the FARC volunteers for it, as they support the group. They never kill innocent people on purpose. Only by accident, as with any army. Trust me, this is fact.

I also met another lady who was kidnapped by FARC. She was released after her family paid the randsom.

However, she was able to tell the army/police where they kept her hostage and they army/police raided the place and killed them.

It is sad, because Colombia is a gorgeous and fun country. If they could get rid of FARC, stop the drugs and cut the street violience, tourists and investors would flock there.

It could become a wealthy tourist stop and the citizens would benefit from it.
