Hi justin!
i been playing songs using chords fully and plucking out melodies instead of just two strings going up n down the frets. can I do this or is it forbidden? Essentially im playing melody as well as rhythm n key.
A bar is a segment of time with a given number of beats. Count along with the video and you see that the Root chord is played for 4 bars, sub-dominant chord for 2 bars, root chord for 2 bars, dominant chord for 1 bar, sub-dominant for 1 bar, root chord for 1 bar and then 1 last bar on the dominant chord. 4+2+2+1+1+1+1 = 12 bars Wash, rinse, repeat....
12 bar is the number of bars in the musical pattern. ie in a 4:4 time signiature the pattern repeats every 12 bars. 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and / 12 times.
Thanks a lot. I have a question though. It is pretty difficult for me to play twelve bar blues, say in the key of G, because it requires a huge stretch for my pinky and it is generally difficult to keep my index finger down while reaching on the 2-and, 4-and. Do you have any suggestions for me?
@searchingfordaniel An exercise that helped me is to run a scale like pattern w index on 3 middle on 5 pinky on 7 and just run it like you would a pentatonic scale.
stupid youtube wont let me change my rating. i was going to push play and the stupid thing gave one star instead so im gonna say sorry and your video is really useful so thank you.
Does anybody know where I can go on youtube to learn blues songs where it sounds like one person is playing rhythm and lead. I think maybe they use full G or full chord tunings. if you look up jimi playing acoustic thats kinda what i mean.
play pentatonics and start throwing some two string strums and chords.. jimi usually played like that... its a matter of rythm... it wasnt as deep chord melody work as eg joe pass... but just start strumming groups of strings instead of one... once u get that work on a rythm thats tight enough so u can feel like its two instruments chatting... also, try to play a lower lick and answer with a higher one... Q&A like that for a moment... and jimi played the bass notes with his thumb as well ...
I've been playing guitar for about 7 years now and have just discovered the wonder that is the blues, and your video really helped clear up a lot of unanswered questions from tablature.
cheers man this is how i've always played it but never understood the counting so thankyou very much
i've been soloing all over the blue last few days using the minor blues scale where you add an extra note into the minor pentatonic its working lovley :)
real useful lesson again justin. one thing ive never understood though, why doesnt the 12 bar blues take into account sharps and flats? if it did, it would be A, C and C#.. enlighten me anyone?
well, you know how he says for the I IV V chord progression, you count up from A like: A, B, C, D.. so D is the IV chord, right? but how come he hasn't counted sharps and flats. because then, it would have gone A, A#, B, C, so C would be the IV chord in the progression.
hope ive made my meaning clearer, its a tricky question, sorry!
If you are counting only in half notes, it wouldn't be the I IV V, it references the fourth note in the [scale] of the key, and accordingly the fifth note in the scale.
For example, the A scale is composed of:
A B C# D E F# G# A, so the I IV V would be the chord of A, the chord of D and the chord of E. Hope this helps.
great lessson thank you u sooo much i was always thinking that for blues u need 2 use ur barre chords and that was it but the world of power chords is just as sweet
the last bar doesn't really have to be the V chord most songs use de root on the last two bars bus it's a very nice explanation not all chuck berry's songs are that way but johnny be goode is on A# ;)

yes, the intervals and everything are correct. it just creates a different sound when you use different chords. but everything in this video is correct.
Oh my, I've been trying to figure all this stuff out forever! And it FINALLY clicked. Justin, it's like you just explained the secret of the universe and I finally get it. Thank you for the explanation.
good lesson but a little suggestion. instead of your ring finger on the 7th fret for me at leastits easier to use your ring finger on the 7th fret. that makes the stretch a little less painful
Good stuff, As a long time picker, I just like you frank manner and eloquent delivery. I would dig some sort of interaction with digital meshing in a future day. Thanks for de-mystifying the 12-bar. I've been playing them for years, evryone loves them, be well, erik
having been playing the guitar on/off for years jsut reading tabs and knowing next to 0 in theory. glad you explainerd the 12bar. now I can put a name on what I was playing ;)
nice nice...i think he was right about what he said on the end of this tutorial. "learn to play through ears, stop relying on youtube and internet tabs".. hahaha It's hard !!!! LOL
Hey! I would like to have some lessons about doing solos... you have learned out how to use scales, and I think you should continue and show how to play solos..
Hi Justin, came across your vids on You Tube searching for 12 bar guitar lessons! Was amazed by your vids. FANTASTIC instruction!
I took up guitar many years ago but was given a really bad guitar, so dropped trying to play as i though i was crap, but you have inspired me as much as my new Eric Johnson Fender. I love to play now and im learning fast thanks to you! cheers mate!
Since I didn't see an answer I decided to give my 2 cents here... honestly it depends on the age and comprehension of the person. There are some who are able to play Satriani licks in just a couple years, and some take ages to move on past bar chords. What IS important is lots of time to just fool around on the neck and experiment. 1/2 hour is good but try bumping that up to 1 or 2 hours at least.
I suppose after 10 months the player should be getting a good hang of chord changing and simple songwriting. The first year or two are vitally importa

good lesson but a little suggestion. instead of your ring finger on the 7th fret for me at leastits easier to use your ring finger on the 7th fret. that makes the stretch a little less painful

Good stuff, As a long time picker, I just like you frank manner and eloquent delivery. I would dig some sort of interaction with digital meshing in a future day. Thanks for de-mystifying the 12-bar. I've been playing them for years, evryone loves them, be well, erik

Just a quick question justin what sort of level do think someone should be at practiceing 1/2 hour a day everyday for 10months thanks in advance
