  • People in 1979 did not realise how foolish it was of Fitzroy to recruit as they did in the late 1970s.

    It is notable how other clubs then in debt - St. Kilda, Melbourne, Footscray - were willing to accept wooden spoons as a lesser evil than operating losses, and sold all their top players in effort to cut their debts. They survived - and Fitzroy, whose supporters saw wooden spoons as worse than any operating loss - died. What does that tell you about club management??
