You're 100% correct TzzX78. Other than the tribute to Whitney Houston, I simply could not relate to most of the music played at the Grammy awards ceremony recently. I feel sorry for the youth of today whose only exposure to music is through songs that have lyrics that you mentioned in your thread. In otherwards absolute and complete junk that simply is offensive to one's ears!
@TzzX78 oh don't get so doe eyed, every generation has good and bad. if you think modern music isn't as good as old music you're either an anachronism or a product of the music you like.
@TzzX78 music is definitely more sexually explicit that it has been, but you could say the same of literature and cinema too, so i'd find it hard to condemn anyone for it. and not all of yesteryear's music has been chaste, if you know what i mean. you shook me all night long by ac dc springs to mind.
@MuckyGhost, i agree each generation likes the songs primarily of its own generation but anybody that has been around long enough has to know that music has taken a dramatic decline in substance, quality and creativity. You would be hard pressed to find much today that will be the classics of tomorrow. Where are the real students of their craft? I hear songs today and see what is passed off as talent and cant help but wonder what the heck has happened. Yesteryear was better by far
@summersbr1 you have to remove your own prejudices from your judgement. what about keane, or coldplay? bt? the decemberists? if you think musical creativity has declined then you're not listening to enough. the best music is rarely the most famous, and fashions change. appreciation of style changes. frank sinatra didn't write the songs he sang, and in 40 years time people will say no one sings like katy perry anymore. music will always be different and people will always say it's worse.
@TzzX78, i agree that profanity and bad lyrics dominate music today but its more than just that. Todays music, even without the foul lyrics leaves alot to be desired. From R&B to rock to pop, music just isnt that good these days. And we all know jazz and blues is almost totally extinct. There is a reason why large events like the super bowl usually invites the old school entertainers to perform their halftime shows. The best music has already been made. Yesteryear's music was far better
First time I'm listening to this and I had never eared of, but yet I'm french and even though I was born in 61, I was too young to be aware of their existence ! Thanks to the great Harry Nillson who guided me to them !
@TheCandice40 They're a Jersey band; some of them were with Joey Dee and the Starlighters. They were a rockin bunch of guineas and Eddie was a great talent.
Eddie still sounds as GREAT today as he did years ago......Where has the time gone????Those were truly the "GOOD Ol days......Nancy, from "THE REASONS"
I dont think enough people realize or understand that this band was not just a little pop bubble gummish band. They are so much more than "oldies". They were REAL musicians and their songs were crafted. They were fun, beautiful, honest and very real. I just consider them to be very important. And I hate looking over and seeing bubble gum bands in the YT vid list. The Rascals should not even be associated with crap. Love em dearly. Thanks for posting x
@MegaTommy1957 I love that you have the names as I remember them too.! I met them at a radio station in NC in the 60's. I was so young but remember it so well. Love the Rascals
where I live- theyve taken the "oldies" station and changed it to (blehh) contemporary country. I miss real radio. I miss hearing these kind of songs. I love the Rascals. Love these records. Thank you & peace :)
@TheLadyjazzy1 ya know what, I have heard this song since the sixties and I never thought about that being parisian cafe music, but it is! wow - that is cool - thanks for pointing that out. So it only took me over 45 years...
Maybe my interpretation skills are getting rusty in my old age, but I don't see where this song has anything to do with Occupy Wall Street. Lighten up and enjoy it, people!
I was born in 56 and grew up in the 60's too. I was most certainly a fabulous time and I'm lucky for it. Today, I see these OWS kids trying to co-opt the 60's but they don't have a clue. It was about beauty, not all this vileness and hate. We had nothing and we didn't care. There were no trustfund babies, living off mommy and daddy, like them. They turn my stomach because they pervert the real spirit of the 60's. OWS, shut up and go home!
@Iknewb4udid - I was there, too. The 60s was a time very much about peaceful demonstrations against unjust politics and the selling out of America to corporate interests, just as it was a time of marching against war & the draft, against racism, for women's rights, and have you forgotten the Grey Panthers marching for Social Security and Medicare?
Everything was free in the 60's & I mean everything. It was so great growing up then, I feel sorry 4 these young kid's nowaday's, they seem so angry & we were so happy & care free.
Everytime I hear this I'm transported to my childhood home lying on a mat on the front porch and my Mom serving melon and cantaloupe to me and all my brothers and my oldest brother Ricky being in Vietnam at that time. I see the birds flying overhead and envision my block, What a time it was to be a kid,
i thought that promoted video on the upper right said "and I'm a moron"... ....but i love this song, each time i hear it in the grocery store i still get goosebumps
Heard this on A.F.-Radio 1969 Cu-Chi Vietnam, someone came up and I could hear them talking but I couldn't. The song filled my ears and brain when I looked back up I forgot where I was... Thanks for uploading
Must be 2 Bieber fans that didn't like this song (thumbs down) FYI Felix was one of the greatest songwriters of that era. Very under appreciated. They just don't play great songs anymore on the radio...so glad I have my cd's.
Excellent. I went from California to New London Conn. to go to commissary school 1967. What a time to be 17 and in the coast guard. This song was hot and my pals and I would go to New York lookin for luv on the week ends. The Rascals gave you courage to go up to the girls. The radio would wake us up to, It's A Beautifu Morning, and the day always went beautiful. LOL
"hows the weather-whether or not we're together, together would be much better, i love you i love you forever, you know, well that can't be bad" what more can i say about one of the all tirme greatest groups ever!
When this record came out in 1967 I was 13 and just getting into Top 40 and pop music in a big way. I was enraptured by this record the first time I heard it on the radio and it immediately became my favorite song of all time ( I was only 13 after all). In fact, I played this record so much that it ended up warped. I still have it upstairs in my big box of 45's and it still knocks me out to this day.
The genius of this group is on the highest level. To bad this mix is not very good on this youtube video ,but when you hear them on a record it is amazing.
I got off a bus in Nagoya, Japan when I passed a record store advertising that they had ALL CD's. Sure enough, they had the Best of the Rascals. Absolutely love this song!
@inkey2 There were many groups of the 1960s who equalled the Beatles at least one time, with one song; even the one-hit wonders. (From a big-time Beatles fan.)
@57highland yeah, I agree......there were many songs that were equal to Beatles tunes.....but most were one hit wonders or, had a couple of hits. Like the Knickerbockers hit "lies".....Very few were consistant "hit factories" like lennon and mccartney
@inkey2 Yeah, that's what I was saying ... that while no one had the Beatles' consistency or longevity, many groups (including one-hit wonders) had one song that ranked with Beatles quality (e.g., "Mr Dieingly Sad" by The Critters, 1966, which is posted)
@inkey2 Very few had the originality and consistency that comes from the awe inspiring talent of the Beatles. I'm sure any such as yourself who are easily impressed and can't tell ingenuity from dumb luck would agree with you.
@MrSluggo666 actually I am not easily impressed and have followed the Beatles since I first saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. ....I was also a musician and taught guitar for 30 years, so no....I definately am not "easily impressed". I am just saying that there is more to life than the beatles.......By the tone of your comment to me I can only assume that you have a beatles shrine in your basement with candles and an altar,
@57highland AND....here is what I like about this song....there is a lot of subtle tweeks chained together that make this song a masterpiece...the opening tinkle of the piano sounds like twilight coming.....then the thumping of "an acoustic stand up bass and it's buzzing against the fingerboard.....and the "accordian or concertina"....feels like you are sitting on a streetside cafe in france.....the strings and horns are delicately sewn into the fabric of the song.....it's "perfect" production
@inkey2 You are right about all those finer points of "How Can I Be Sure?" I've always been fascinated by that brief but perfect bit on the accordion. The horns worked out nicely too. (I think we hear a French horn in there somewhere, besides the obvious trumpet.) BTW, Gene Cornish grew up in my hometown ('bout 12 years older than me, though). I think he was born north of the border but his family moved here when he was a kid. He still comes up every few years.
Too bad hard feelings make a reunion impossible. Great songs great performers. I saw Felix on tour recently and has surprisingly good pipes after all this time. The Bragetti bros had amazing voices on these recordings.
Just amazing, a brilliant version. I can't believe I have not come across this before - and I'm from the era! I like the song anyway, which helps - but this is special. Until David Cassidy came along and made it famous I'd only ever heard the song performed in the [proper] nightclubs of the 60's - usually by the resident trio that played between main performers and when the DJ/MC was having a break.
When people talk of the 60's it seems they always like to bring up the social strife. I like to mention the music. Songs such as this made it a great time to be alive.
@tp10488 yeah, the later part of the 60s got pretty out of control but it produced a lot of great music from a generation not afraid to explore new musical avenues
One of the greatest bands from the greatest era of pop music in the lifetime of any of us. This rendition was/is/will always be unbeatable. The Rascals' sweet sincerity has been strangled to death by the thrusting coarseness marketed as "music" by the manufacturing industry that is today's pop business. As for their superb musicianship - forget it if you want to make it big today. Grow a fringe.
These guys are SOOOOOOOOO under-rated....this and others are the songs of my teen years...I get gooseflesh when I hear this and other of their songs...what an epic group.
@bullfrog11758 :What a great observation!123123.Plus that Parisienne squezebox-it is a great tune, fun.Loved this when I was growing up-rainy night ,lying in bed listening to my transistor radio...bliss.
amazing when I hear a song by these guys I sing every word along with them and it's been 40 YEARS! Felix, IMO had one of the all-time greatest voices. Soulful, get's me every time.
every time i go on vacations with my family, my dad always plays his set of oldies music for hours on in and this was one of them. I'm glad I was introduce to this kind of genre of music.
How beautiful....

@inkey2 Very few had the originality and consistency that comes from the awe inspiring talent of the Beatles. I'm sure any such as yourself who are easily impressed and can't tell ingenuity from dumb luck would agree with you.
MrSluggo666 5 months ago
@MrSluggo666 actually I am not easily impressed and have followed the Beatles since I first saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. ....I was also a musician and taught guitar for 30 years, so no....I definately am not "easily impressed". I am just saying that there is more to life than the beatles.......By the tone of your comment to me I can only assume that you have a beatles shrine in your basement with candles and an altar,
inkey2 5 months ago
@inkey2 What a ridiculous comment to make ,as if my altar would be in the basement !
MrSluggo666 5 months ago
@57highland AND....here is what I like about this song....there is a lot of subtle tweeks chained together that make this song a masterpiece...the opening tinkle of the piano sounds like twilight coming.....then the thumping of "an acoustic stand up bass and it's buzzing against the fingerboard.....and the "accordian or concertina"....feels like you are sitting on a streetside cafe in france.....the strings and horns are delicately sewn into the fabric of the song.....it's "perfect" production
inkey2 5 months ago 2

For a long time I didn't know this magnificent song was The Rascals. It's so different from their previous songs.

@tp10488 Or a time to wish you were alive.....I am under 40, but am a huge fan of all rock music made before 1970....it's been mostly downhill since!
