These guys still set the standard for hot electric guitar-steel guitar more than fifty years after they first recorded... that's amazing! Leon Rhodes and Buddy Charlton of the Texas Troubladors came close, as did James Burton and Ralph Mooney, and also Danny Gatton and Buddy Emmons.... Love the humor with which JB and Speedy played; they were clearly having a great time. Bryant had perhaps the most advanced right hand picking technique ever, and impecable country-jazz chops and taste.
Wow! These were two baaaaaaaaaaaaad boys. I've really started getting into their music lately. So much jazz and swing in there! Thanks for posting this!
Supergeile Darbietung - aber der Titel ist falsch! Wurde auch falsch vom Moderator genannt. Auf der Capitol - Single CF 3150 wird als Titel "Cotton Pickin` " angegeben. Western Swing vom Allerfeinstem !!!
These guys were kindred spirits. The only duo that ever came close was the pairing of Danny Gatton and Buddy Emmons. Different styles and approaches, I love both equally. You certainly don't hear fun stuff like this these days!
Thanks Pappy, you sure dig up some good ones. I'd like to know the date? Jimmy had a few of the earliest Fender electric guitars. This is probably a 2 pick-up Esquire (pre Tele), Broadcaster or NoCaster. These guys had such great tone and swinging interplay. This cooks a little better IMHO, than alot of their records.
This was Cliffie Stone's Hometown Jamboree. Cliffie's dad, Herman the Hermit, played stand-up bass every week in the house band. Ernie Ford made his 1st TV appearance, ever, on Cliffie's show, and I can remember watching it that night. I also remember Mollie Bee's very 1st TV appearance, also on Cliffie's show. I also remember Cliffie, the 2nd week that Mollie was on the show, screwing up pronouncing her last name, and saying, "let's just call her Mollie Bee." Her last name is Beachboard.
This is what "country pickin' " is all about. That kind of music is fast becoming a lost art because modern country music is all about the next "country/pop crossover" hit and getting behind the next Taylor Swift/Carrie Underwood/Shania Twain to come along, and forget about actually learning your craft as a musician or singer/entertainer. Support people like Junior Brown and Brad Paisley (a real throwback if there ever was one).
Ok, were those applause there in the middle prompted? I've often wondered when you hear applause like that on old shows. Not that they didn't deserve it, of course!! It's just always in a weird place.
......and your hearin' two of the greatest "hillibillie hero's" ever!
Basically jus' makin this up outta thin air is like,......, well, jus' another example of the abililities of human ingenuity ( Barber & Einstein, etc.). It's ALL GREAT!
Watch the Speedy / Jimmy space ship movie for a real kick. Editing is great!

thanks for this clip these two guys were so fantastic it's hard to believe even when you see it! Jimmy Bryant has been a huge inspiration for me as a guitar player (I'll never get anywhere near his level, though...) and the sheer take-no-prisoners musicianship of Speedy and him as a team makes me downright speechless.
Thanks for sending, vladgomek, it's real fun seeing these guys playing together, and as you say: this is lot's of improvisation going on and could well be placed in a nice Jazz context, they certainly would be able to handle that, very nice Vid with historic value, greets Vic.
Finally! Some one put the whole clip on! I have a copy of this on a VHS tape that I haven't been able to play in years! Your copy is quite clear, but the tracking gets funky in the same spot as mine. A friend of mine has a very clean tape of this - he claims that he got it from Cliffie Stone's wife. Anyway, the internet is forever grateful for your work, Pappy...
Licks galore! And I sure miss Cliffy. What a great gentleman. Met him at the Palomino Club when he was emceeing the weeknight talent shows. Mr. Smooth with a cigar. Johnny Pal

that kicked ass.
if they had a P-Bass walking the bottom end on that song it would have rocked even harder.

Thanks for posting this one. Speedy was a character, and it is nice to be able to see him play.
I met him after he had the stroke, and couldn't play any longer. He was always fun to be around.
