For the Persians the declared enemies were the Athenians. Greek chose to battle mainly on sea rather than land. The plan was to hold them in narrow passages like Thermopylae and try to win on the sea. Total Greek army on the sea 80000. Total Greek army in Thermopylae 7000. It was a stalemate at both land and sea. Ephialtes showed to Persians a way to surround  Thermopylae. Most Greek then retreated frome there. The 300 Spartans AND 700 Thespians stayed.

300+700=1000 Stayed and fought to death. 400 Thebans surrendered to the Persians (the rest retreated) Xerxes passed and went to Athens. He completely destroyed Athens. Athenians had evacuated the city. Only a few remained on Acropolis to guard the Temples. Xerxes killed them all and destroyed the temples. Parthenon and most of what is on Acropolis is built on 5th century after this disaster. Finally Greeks won at sea (Salamis).

They were ambushed and killed by the Immortals and Leonidas had his head ripped off and he was dragged around the camp as a way to make fun of him. The film had him throw the spear and force the Tyrant into shedding blood because that would be Epic. But if they made the spear hit and kill Xerxes, that would make the whole film fiction. Because Xerxes didn't die that day, Leonidas did.

@Thanasaros21 they were not half naked, they had a 60kilos armor equiped.. only the shield was 25-30 kilos. thats why the normaly finished a fight between 30 to 45 minutes... they were fast cause they didnt wanna get tired. a normal spartan warrior was about 1,6m tall... and that helped them a lot cause they could get covered behind their shield easily, + they had now archers, they thought that bow is a cowards weapon.
