  • Thank-you. That was marvelous. Heaven and earth in every phrase...

  • It is amazing to come across someone with a link to Wanda Landowska. Simply great. I can't wait to finish re-stringing my harpsichord so I can try this. Had not heard it before.

  • Why do some people insist on calling a non-vocal piece a 'song'?

  • It warms me every time, watching this.

  • I'm so happy to have found this video Its one of my favorites I love he minor sound

to have found you playing it is wonderful !

  • Wonderful performance!!!!

  • que linda señora! hay una sensibilidad muy profunda en su interpretación!

  • I adore this song. Thank you so much for posting. The Harpsichord is such a beautiful instrument and you play it beautifully. When did you begin to learn to play it?

  • @ReginaMuse93 My teacher was Putnam Aldrich. His teacher was Wanda Landowska

  • No surprise atree3. This recording is very clear and a pleasure to listen to.

  • L o v e -_-) א ה ב ה

  • absolute purcell! The cromatical step is the same as in Music for a while!! great music btw!

  • This is the Ground by William Croft..not Purcell!

  • I listen to this alot...:)

  • This is wonderful.

  • @TonicMike

so is your violin , the arrangement, and the performance, on your page. Couldn't find a place to comment there.

  • @atree3 Thank you! Your playing reminds me of why I'm never going to give up.

  • bravo!

  • I must watch this video at least once a week.

  • @Waldvogel91 or else?

  • @atree3 Don't know what would happen, am probably not going to find out for a while!

  • Such a beautiful melody!

    Such a moving performance!

    Such skillful hands!

  • You play harpsichord too? Awesome!

  • una grosa la tia!!!

  • Be it strange or not - it is one of the very few pieces not suffering at all from listening to it on and on. So simply many thanks for sharing those wunderful and kind of magic 2:45 minutes with us. All the best!

  • I have been quite surprised at the number of views . .

  • You play so beautifully, I listen to your recording of this weekly. I love your instrument also. The way you play moves me. Thank you so much for posting. best wishes ;)

  • omg, thumb on white key!!! ouch. but he/she treats the harpsichord in a very gentle way! i like it.

  • @Chiquichivil What about thumb on white key? You think you never play that key with the thumb or what do you mean?

  • For score search "Icking purcell". Then GROUND.

  • fantastic perfomance! my favorite!

  • wow the old man play so well!!! im awed~!

his hands is still so soft omg

dis piece realli very very nice ^^

  • Splendid!!!

  • For those that want to have the score, I remember that I edited it in Encore, so I can send it via e-mail, OK?

  • Very beautiful interpretation. This is a fantastic piece.

  • nowadays this piece is believed to be by William Croft. You will be able to find it in many collections. My very old score of this piece is in the Lea Pocket Scores number 158 - Purcell Works for Harpsichord - although Croft is not credited.

  • i don't suppose you have the score on your computer, do you?

  • I love this piece and also your very sensitive interpretation ! But the score is very difficult to find... Could you please, or someone else, give me a reference or a collection title with the name of the editor ? Thanks a lot.

  • Absolutely beautiful

  • génial!

  • what a beautiful piece

  • as strange as this may sound, i find this piece to sound very much like the moonlight sonata's first movement. it's just the structure, its very similar.

  • this piece is gorgeus! you play very well!

  • This is absolutely the most beautiful music I have ever heard and very well play... I want to thank you for this recording. It really moves me. ;)

  • what is the purpose of having two sets of keys?

  • This piece is a good example of why two keyboards are necessary. In the opening the treble line crosses over the bass and sometimes even needs the same note.

  • Bravo !!!

Très belle interprétation de ce Ground de Purcell !

On veut d'autres vidéos vous au clavecin !

  • @ROGLIANO C'est pas le Grownd de Purcell...c'est William Croft

  • Sublime, simply sublime.

and you have worn the absolutely apposite garment for such music.

  • amazing

  • This is lovely music. Is that your own harpsichord?

Michael Nyman adapted this into one of his pieces for The Draughtsman's Contract-do you know which one I mean?

  • yes, it is my instrument, built for me in 1970 by Wm. Dowd.

I am a great fan of Peter Greenaway

    thanks

  • Lucky you!

Oh good-me too. I've just favourited on here a trailer for a digital oratorio thing he's done based on Genesis called 'The Blue Planet'.

  • Dear aTree, what piece of music is it marked as on your score?? i've found ground in c minor but this is far different. do you know where i could get hold of this arrangement? thankyou.

  • I do apologise the sheetmusic online shop was lying to me.

    You're playing is wonderful.

  • I'm confessing to listening to this song over and over again for hours at a time.

  • You're not a lone in that!

  • This is a very well-made video since it also demonstrates the advantages of the dual-manual harpsichord along with the delightful playing of a fine and rare piece.

  • thank you

  • Greetings, viewers! I've found a modest copy of the ground in PDF format along with a MIDI rendering available for download at the Werner Icking Music Archive. It may be found under _Purcell_ as _Ground_--it is the only ground titled as such presently available under his name. I hope this helps anyone else desiring a copy!

  • thanks. It is such a beautiful ground, I am glad others can play it

  • Excellent! It is not the same without the second manual and your tempo is most agreeable. Tell me, where found you the score?

  • sorry I cannot help you with that. It is a xerox I made decades ago,, probably from a library copy.

  • Its in the Complete Works of William Croft which was published a few years back by Stainer and Bell.

  • I guess the playing Person is a little aged. Therefor this extreme fine Play and the fingerwork is impressive.

  • No, but there's an idiot commenting! ;p Cheers! You gave yourself away!

  • simply sublime

  • Thank you very much for this!

This is a very respectful instrument! Long before the Grand Piano...there was Harpsichord.

  • respectful and respectable

  • Bravo!

  • I've been hoping you'd put up some harpsichord here. Great to hear it!

  • I have nothing I could add that would express how this made me feel. Thank you

  • thank you for listening

  • Guooooooood.....!!

  • I love this music and your eminent playing!!

Thank you for sharing. I hope to hear more Purcell music from you!!

    Vennlig hilsen

    Tor Inge

  • Really nice... but wrote by William Croft and not Purcell. Thanks to share!

  • interesting, evidently this is still up for some discussion, I'm trying to get a facsimilie .

  • The ground is included in William Croft's complete works put out by Stainer and Bell. 2 sources list it as by Croft and in one its part of a complete suite by Croft. There is a ground in C minor correctly attributed to Purcell, but this isn't it.

  • thank you

  • Beautiful piece...

  • You, multitalented one, playing Harpsichord is in accord with poetry in motion - a unique set of instruments - delightful.

  • i guess the schooling at standford did you well

  • You may well be the Renaissance Woman of YouTube. Always a delight.

  • lovely !!!

  • 5* need I say more?

  • You inspire me to take up the piano again...it has been so long. Not sure why we toss away the things we love sometimes. Oh how I long for more than 24 in a day. Thank you for sharing with us. I absolutely loved it.

  • I wish this video and that piece of music would last longer.....Margaret, you should do more videos featuring you at the keyboard.

    Hope you're feeling better.

    Ronnie

  • Wonderful sound. (-:

  • This is John BTW (Cosabio) Yet another channel. This one for just for Astrotometry, but you're welcome to check it out.

  • Wow. Very nice!

  • You never cease to delight, amuse, bedazzle and amaze me :) Wonderful playing.

  • Stunningly beautiful, and oozing with emotion... encore... ENCORE!

  • Great composition, and - of course - marvelously played. I've been waiting for a musical performance video from you and it did not disappoint. Thank you!

  • thank YOU. I am really out of shape

  • Lovely!

  • Is there no end to your Beauty?

  • "Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us" Martin Luther quotes

    Thank you Margaret;)

  • That was amazing. I had no idea you could play the spinet. Beautiful.

  • oh how I love the harpsichord! Thank you, this was beautiful!

  • It's passed too much time, since the last time I've commented a video of yours, lady.

    And I apologize for this...

But I'm glad, now, to be watching this one of yours... and to comment it!

You're amazingly talented... and this music, to me, tastes of absolute and eternity.

Thank you very much for sharing! :-)

  • beautifull you are a great player

  • Bravo!

  • Do you play any other instruments? The Harpsichord makes me think of some parlor with a young woman corseted to the hilt playing away while life goes on outside.

  • Margaret, I wish you had a CD of your harpsichord music I could buy. I LOVE it. So soothing and miraculous! :-)
