@XxAlex1xX1 Depends on your riding experience. The less experience you have, the smaller the sport bike you should start out on. R1's are no where considered a good starter sport bike. All R1 riders I know started out on R6's.

Having owned only motocross and dual-purpose bikes i wonder what is the engine life of a R1. Can you expect to get say 100,000 kms out of the motor with only minor problems, or it high maintenance. Owners of past R1's any comments ....

Sounds a bit like a muscle car because it uses a cross plane crankshaft which is what all american v8's use as far as I know.

My mate that sorts them out on the dyno reckons they are a pain in arse, can hardly do anything to the engine as it goes out of sync real easy and vibrates like a bastid, worse than standard. I just cannot see the 12k price tag, such a joke, 146bhp at rear wheel standard..

@exup1k look, i've started with a yamaha gt50cc in 1988, then went 2 the TZR2500, then 2 an FZ400, the had an FZR750RR then went to my 1st 1000cc in 1991, after that i went to yamaha thunderace. 1998 i went to my 1st R1, then went to 2003, after went to 2005 and a year ago i got a 2008. Now i have the 2010 R1.. all i can say to u my friend is this: it may NOT have the balls my 2005 had especially at high revs, but MY GOD its by far the fastest bike i've ever driven in the track.

My list is very large, you would think Bsh*t.. owning over 70 bikes since, from rds, tzrs, to gsxrs r1s. basically almost everything. Currently have 3 R1s (2 track) RSVR mille, 08 R6, 00 R6 and 02 R6. Track riding mainy down to the rider, i have beaten 09 r1 on the track yet have been beaten myself by cbr600rr...with me on a 99 R1.

@GreatWhiteCY Interesting you say the 09 doesnt have the top speed of your old 05 R1, the 05 R1 aint even that must of a fast bike, i know i have gunmetal grey one in the garage at the moment, any GSXR thou is faster than the 05 R1, And the 05 R1 is quite a wimp in the midrange - so you will feel impressed by the 09.... but your 09 is outright slower than a 05, yet the 05 aint nothing fantastic, a carb R1 can keep with a 05.... so wheres your value for money ??????

All i ever cared about was the BIKE & if i enjoyed riding it and looking at it, and the new R1 just suits me FINE, all i said was i dont care if i get beaten on the str8s, as long as i can beat the shit out of them on the track. I love my new R1,it has everything i want on a bike, it suits the way i drive & thats y i bought it, 2 me the rest is BS

@exup1k Fantastic sitting position, no vibrations like ALL my other R1's i had, brilliant midrange power, finally a smooth gear box on an R1... to me power on the highway and max speed doesnt mean anything anymore, im in my 40's. all i want now is QUALITY..and the new R1 has that. If i wanted highway speed i would buy a suzuki FAT bussa, my friends might be faster in the long str8's but on the track??? i kick ass.. BADLY, and thats all that matters...

@GreatWhiteCY It is about speed, i agree especially the midrange, but a 05 06 GSXR has the big midrange the new r1 has. Looking at your bikes, your very much Yamaha, shame you never tried all the other great bikes out there! The 09 R1 needs alot gas early as you drive out of bends, so why you never tried a well sorted Ducati, not a fan myself but if thats the power delivery you like. I know MANY guys that bought the cross plane and sold it on, being disappointed, and the price is ridiculous.

I've read all kinds of comments on how good the '09 R1 sounds and how similar it is to the M1sound (and they really are, don't get me wrong) but the amazing thing that everyone keeps forgetting is that the M1 engine has only 800cc, against the 1000cc of the R1, it makes 6000 rpm more than the R1's engine but nevertheless it has the same low,deep growl exhaust sound as the R1. THAT is what is amazing!
