  • R.I.P. Ray Gillen you was and always will be a great singer

  • Dio's version is the best by far, but damn, Ray was one amazing vocalist.

  • He seems to sing it in a diff key at times to what the band is playing ! ....dont wish to speak ill of the dead ....but i thought that was very "rock generic" ...no real personality n his voice = adequate , but that all.

  • I saw this live and for years I thought I had seen Ian Gillan! They sold posters with Gillan in it and even the locandina had Gillan in it .

  • Great stuff, Ian sounds kinda like Bruce Dickinson on this recording though

  • @ChristianU2ubeh it's Ray Gillen, NOT Ian Gillan...

  • @MattSVK1 Fuck my life Ray* sorry.

  • he is far better then martin.I tried to get into those albums and i just cant.Ive listened a few times thinking it might grow on me but it doesnt. ray was amazing and martin was great but i just didnt like the songs

  • nice job but does need the keyboards.

  • mmm it's horrible for me compared with Dio's vocals mmm not really good

  • Black Sabbath should've just stopped after Dio left. Seriously.........

  • @RedKnightTheGreat I liked the ian gillan album

  • Ray Gillen ... great voice, but he belongs in a choir, not in a classic metal band like Black Sabbath.

This version of The Mob Rules has none of the savagery of the Dio version. It sounds like a smoothed out pussified version of the Dio rendition, which is screaming and apocolyptic.

  • @nightowl8936

Are your finger's hardwired to my brain?

..I couldn't have expressed it differently.

  • This is not a good example of his best in Sabbath. The Eternal Idol demo sounds way better than the actual album versions of those tracks, that alone says alot. But also one version of the demo includes some excellent live renditions of Danger Zone, War Pigs, and Heart Like A Wheel..the other 3 live tracks not so much.

The actual album isn't bad, it's just too stiff and lacking feeling when compared to the far superior Gillen versions. The album doesn't even exist anymore in my view.

  • Frank I. is not the Prince of Darkness. He's the best there is, the best there was, the best there always will be ....... and you are too, Bret.

  • But gillian is amazing yes.

But i cant imagine the sabbath i know with anyone other then Ozzy or Dio.

    They make sabbath... Sabbath!

Althought Iommi is the true prince of darkness ;D

  • Btw p0rkjell0,

Do you have the third, unreleased, BADLANDS album called "DUSK" from '99, i think?

In case not there's a few on ebay now...

Tight album but horrible artwork. You can't read any part of the booklett....not even with a magnifying glass.

  • All i can say is puff, puff, give mother fuc@#! Awesome range!

  • He sings this song in a higher key than Dio.

  • It's a shame that this line-up didn't last. It was the most youthfull line-up since Ozzy. But Tony Martin was perfect on the first three albums he did, so I'm glad it turned out the way it did.

  • nah man dio can actualy sing n so can gillian the material from the ozzy period era was better that all

  • People who think Black Sabbath stop existing after 1979 = Epic Fail

  • This is smoking hot, but I think Ray's best work was with Badlands... RIP Ray!

  • Hy p0rkjell0,

You're on the money regarding Ray Gillen. HIm singing Mob Rules was hot but BADLANDS was thee shit! I love those albums! Jake had a great guitar sound

  • I agree 100%. Badlands was wicked! One of my favorite bands of all time by far!!

  • Badlands is wicked!!! Damn shame the band never got the credit for the music they made... Respect to mr Ray Gillen!!!

  • not a patch on dio........actually the best singer sabbath ever had was Ian gillan (born again)

  • Glenn Hughes, Tony Martin and Dio kick his ass any day

  • wow!!!! if there's one person who can just smoke the one and the only Ronnie James Dio... it is Ray Gillan.

Tony is the most underrated guitar player to ever live.

    wow.

  • I agree man

  • Actually Tony Martin gives Dio a big run for his money....Headless Cross? Eternol Idol? Tyr? Same Dio inflections but VERY powerful voice.

  • He wasn't talking about those songs, he was talking about THIS song (Mob Rules), and I agree with him (on THIS song). Nobody can top Dio on this, but still I absolutely LOVE Martin singing the songs like Headless Cross, he's an amazing singer, regardless of comparissions.

  • Absolutely love Ray but he wasn't mean enough for this song. Veronica Freeman from Benediction is the only singer who can give Ronnie a serious run for his money on this song. Talk about a mindblowing metal voice!

  • Just thought '1986, he's got that wrong' and had a check. 20+ years ago..... I'M SO OLD...

This guy was great for Sabbath - shame

  • Ray was incredible. I think Dio was better for Sabbath. Ronnie was evil sounding. Ray is a gifted singer but he sounds like Geoff Tate fronting Sabbath. Not a bad thing, but different.

  • I'm a hardcore RJD fan but Ray Gillen on this

    song is fantastic! R.I.P. RAY..

    Thank you blacksabfan for uploading..

  • Ray could sing anything from Ozzy, GIllan, Dio,he had 4 octaves or more of vocal range with natural power voice, nice raspy tone, vibrato, great phrasing and lyrics ,stage presence, the best frontman of the late eighties!RIP R. Gillen!

  • Makes me wonder what a few Ronnie song would sound like with ozzy's voice instead. Some might be pretty cool...

  • @shaolinwisdom it would be better than Ian Gillan's version of heaven and hell. I can see why he didn't finish it. he's a blues rock singer not a metal singer.

but yeah if Ozzy sang a Dio song this might be the first one he would do...as long as sharon's not around.

  • Only Ronnie can sing this song

  • Ray was great! How could you not think his vocals are some of the best? Powerful performance.

  • Gillen is definitely pretty good. He was probably the highest pitched Sabbath singer.

  • Impresionante!!

clap clap clap para un genio como ray!!

que en paz descanse un idolooo que no se tendria que haber muerto

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS, ive been looking for a good recording of Ray with Black Sabbath for years, i have gotten several but too often the recording is trash, i hear there is/are/were a black sabbath album Eternal Idol i think recorded with Ray, but later re-recorded with Martin, does anyone out there know if any copies of the original recordings leaked out or if sabbath plans to release it?

  • LOL! Sorry to laugh at you, but I posted that on here already. Look at the related videos to the right of your screen, or look in my channel.

  • i suppose if i would have looked a little further down i would have seen that.. lol.. my bad.. and thank you once again for posting this.. ive been gathering as much as i can from Ray for years, his vocal style was amazing to say the least!!!

  • Holy fucking loud batman! I had to turn my volume down to almost nothing to avoid destroying my eardrums. Good song though. And yeah, I already know the saying, "if its too loud, you're too old". I am old. I know the song from the movie Heavy Metal (1981).

  • LOL sorry. It is a little loud, but then again, I always keep my computer at a low volume and usually have on headphones so I tailor the sound to what I'm hearing. No one else has said anything yet on this or any of my other audios, so I've just assumed the sound was ok. I'll take it under consideration for future videos.

  • Actually I prefer this volume that way I can cranck it up even on my laptops speakers, awesome song man by the way !!!

  • awesome vocals- go ray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
