It works so well as a waltz that I was second-guessing myself: "Was that actually written in 3 ??" Nope. But the surgeon amputated a beat so brilliantly that it's seamless.
I bet K Jarrett could perform the song's missing beat just as well as the 3 per bar that he kept in this version. :^D
to the guy who said it was nice a waltz...you know it was always in 3/4? it's still nice as a jazz waltz, mind you, just like Alice in Wonderland as done by the Bill Evans Trio, or Someday My Prince Will Come as done by the Miles Davis with Bill Evans on piano. There's a history of this...
@Navonodo No, this song originally was in 4/4. See the movie, or go to the column on the right side of this page and click on the Cliff Edwards version. He sang it in the movie and it's in 4/4.
Awesome!!! Thank you so much for posting this. I faved it a while ago, just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate it and love to listen to it and watch it.
When a piece of music has a physical effect on me like this one does, I know it's exceptional. Jarrett just feels the essence of this song and makes it come through. Beautiful.
Keith, Jack and Gary play standards like this with heart. It's truly an amazing performance. I have the DVD and the complete ECM collection of the trio. It never gets old-it always sounds fresh. Highly recommend it-my favorite pianist and my favorite CD/DVDs in my collection.
The man is enjoying himself so much.

The two other songs are in 3/4, but not this one.

That's Keith's way of living his music, it's peculiar but I don't find it too disturbing
henrids 2 years ago
it is if you want to hear the music lol. I wonder if he's a fan of Glen Gould(he used to hum when he played).

he s face is so funny at 6:40 hehe like he`s checking the drummer ` face to see he`s reaction

it´s because Keith expects the tune to be ended, but Paul keeps on playing to the bridge, that´s why Keith reacts this way

The original tune is also a waltz, too. Nice to hear it as a jazz waltz, though.
