Hexen is great. Heretic is great. Hexen II is great. The only one I didn't like very much was Heretic 2, and that's only because of the third-person stuff.

And btw (in response to an earlier comment) I beat Hexen II without cheats. I also beat the original Hexen without cheats. Heretic is actually much more difficult, in my opinion. (I never beat it without unfair advantages.)

one thing I love about Heretics and Hexens is that they all have depressing ending. You slay thousands of creatures and always end up being cursed, or facing even more horrible oponnents. After Heretic I thought DSparil was a tough guy. After Hexen I thought even the heresiarch was tougher, let alone Korax himself. Hexen was difficult as hell. And man I never got the nerves to get to Eidolon but Ive heard hes impossible to beat cheats-free.

I remember growing up and my dad bringing me this game when I was playing Doom. I popped it in and was hooked. To this day, I still say that Heretic and Doom were the best PC FPS's ever.

great job man. I see what I did wrong...I would try to engage and kill each monster before moving on. You just skip by them all and then kill them all later when u got a better weapon

yes, arrow keys for movement, I remember that! , and . for strafe-peeking around the corners! :D I even tried to go on DoomConnector back when I didn't use the mouse, and I was like "how are they turning around so fast?!" so I would pull the run-around-the-corner, turn, and fire-while-running-backwards

The idea of using the mouse when playing fps games was a little "woot wtf" back then.

I could do that on the hardest difficulty almost totally untouched, strafing rocks and so does skulltag which opens up a few aditional options such as infinite ammo and item respawns, and if you got a computer with MSDOS on it you are so fucking lucky.

Try to remember that back in the time of these games most of us didn't think of using the mouse when playing. We played using only the arrow keys and the action keys (shooting etc). :P

here is a suggestion: next time, get the maulotaur to in-fight with a few monsters, its easier to take him out when hes been weakened a little bit.

the thing that makes doom better than heretic (although gfx are the same) is definitely the music. the music for this level aint bad, but for an endboss i am expecting a more driving sound. doom was great because of all the metal influences :)

Cool level select trick I found, mainly out of curiosity. You can actually put in engage61, engage62, or engage63, and you get warped to that level. 6-1 and 6-2 are winnable, but 6-3 has no exit.

I used the engage 1-5, 1-9 because there are only 5 episodes, and per episode, 9 maps, so 45 maps in all.

I know that hexen is actually heretic 2 but it changed its name to hexen to an unknown reason now there is heretic 2 but it is a pure 3d game but it sucks heretic 1 is better. & hexen is better than heretic I have both & comparing them is simply an insult to hexen.

This was the forerunner to Hexen, silly. It's the first in the series of the Serpent Rider storyline, whereas Hexen was the second. If this was first, it can't have copied Hexen. In fact, even Hexen, the 2nd one - had no clear weapon copies from this. I honestly don't know what you're talking about.

And in the Doom levels you can't look up and down, nor have an inventory, so I'd say the playing technique and the visuals were the things that made this better than Doom, not worse.
