It seems that David Guzik (and I know nothing about him, or his theological stance on the issue of Calvinism vs. Arminianism) confuses imperatives with "ability".
1) Imperatives are commands telling mankind what they "ought to do". They NEVER imply mankind's ability to do what is commanded. In other words, "ought does not imply can".
2) Imperatives are given so that God's people will understand, and recognize their utter impotence to do what is pleasing to God.
Again, I love you man...fleshly arguing is nonsense for sure. But, strongly defending the honor of those you love is not nonsense. If someone insulted (even accidentally) your loved-one, would you not defend him/her? You have to do it in a godly way, but are they not worth it? How about your wife or girlfriend? "Oh honey, I know so and so insulted you, but what matters most is NOT your honor, but that we all just get along." Seriously, is this "manly" thinking?
@SolusChristus924 - We sing songs like "You're altogether worthy, altogether...." Is God "altogether" worthy to defend in matters not essential to man? Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were ready to be burnt alive to defend God's honor, in matters that had NOTHING to do with eternal life. God is dishonored=we are burnt alive instead. Cut and dry. Have we become so wussified and self-centered that we can't even talk about GOD HIMSELF amongst Christians?!!...unless it's essential to US?
@Superchargerman - I also respect your point of view, and let's all of us, no matter what we do or say, do it in love for the glory of GOD. Heck, if those who aren't born again can hotly debate something and still remain friends, how much more should Christians be able to do that in LOVE? We have the Spirit of meekness, patience, love, kindness and gentleness. No matter how we slice it, wrong thoughts about God and pride are what's devisive. Thanks for the video notwithstanding. Bless you, Jay
If everyone believed that God is sovereign in salvation, we would all be of the same mind. Would anyone ever argue about it? The difference in thinking is the division. What "calvinists" believe is that every single person on the face of the earth may come to Christ, and is responsible for doing so. Yet, they are so wicked in their hearts they never will do so. God causes some to come and leaves the rest in their sinful, God-hating state, in a way that humbles man most and glories Him most.
@SolusChristus924 - God is infinite in power and wisdom...does He not also have infinite powers of persuasion. Suppose both Matthew 11:28-29 AND John 6:37-40, 44, 65 are both true at the same time? Come to me all who are weary...and I wil give you rest...."You cannot come to me unless it has been granted to you by the Father." This is what I tell people: do you want to be one of the elect? Then show yourself and others that you are by repenting and believing with ALL your heart.
@SolusChristus924 -the difference between me and billions of others that reject Christ is God. God is behind my eyes to see,ears to hear, my heart to believe...Arminians believe something IN THEM is the difference, thus boasting. Why do we pray for others to be saved? What are we asking God for? To give them eyes to see, ears to hear, and hearts to believe, right? There is NOTHING different in me, more inclined to GOD...God is the difference. This is why it matters. God, not man, gets the glory
its so simple -its us,ie mankind that CHOOSES wether or not to want to know and love God!,the bible is full of this,if only people focus on important things like are you ready to meet jesus? or What do you want to talk to God about? follow the commandments,love your neighbours,and live a good ,pleasing life for jesus,This is the important thing!,not whos catholic,or baptist,or mormon,God alone will know who truly loves him and is searching for him,despite the many corrupted teachings
You can't preach the identical gospel message. thinking salvation could be lost, or walked away from is NOT the same gospel. We are NOT free to think of the LORD as we would wish. Jesus said to love the Lord with all of our minds. It's not ok to think of God as we would like...we are not the center of the gospel. God is. 2 Thess. 2:13- Paul thanks God continually for choosing people for salvation. How do you do that if you don't believe He chooses people? You''re robbing Him of glory.
@SolusChristus924 - the real "division" is the initial error in thinking. Hotly contending for something does not have to be contentious. After all, we defend what we are passionate about. Just as people have been debating this issue for years, some people have been using the excuse "why does it matter, let's just all get along" for years. God's glory, not our salvation, is what matters. It doesn't matter if these doctrines are essential to us...they are to God's glory. Psalm 29:1,2
@SolusChristus924 - imagine someone approaching you and saying: "the only thing I would like to know about superchargerman is what is essential to me(us)." Wouldn't that be the essence of arrogance? How about if people found out about who you are and purposely believed something else in order to mold you into the person they want you to be? Is it o.k. to do with GOD? Do we ever think this issue will go away? God is God-centered. He wants His children to be as well, especially in their thinking.
@SolusChristus924 I bet that there will be Calvinsts and Arminianists in heaven. Its an in-house issue. Its not like only one or the other is saved. Sorry, i am just sick of the debate and want to move on. God bless.
@Superchargerman - (By the way, love you friend.) And what often happens in debates, as is the case here if your first sentence betrays what you think THAT I believe, is you assume my point is such and such. This is how people get all twisted up in arguments. I also believe there will be many arminians in heaven! I never said there wouldn't be! My point is: His glory, who He is, what salvation is and is not, is ABOUT GOD....and HIS GLORY...not about what is and isn't essential to man.
@Superchargerman Do you think there will be no catholics in heaven? I do. So should we stop asking people to come out of her? Calvinism makes Christs sacrifice obsolete. THE message of the Gospel is WHOSOEVER believes in Him will be saved. The ´gospel´ of the elect has a different origin. If your teacher tells you YOU don´t have to make a choice to be saved because God makes it for you, will you? If one doesn´t, will he be saved? See the danger?

Pt. 1:
James 1:12-27 is a passage that I found to be very pertinent to this discussion:
Blessed is the man who endures temptation;
for when he has been approved,
he will receive the crown of life
which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Pt. 2:
Let no one say when he is tempted,
"I am tempted by God";
for God cannot be tempted by evil,
nor does He Himself tempt anyone.
But each one is tempted
when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.
Then, when desire has conceived,
it gives birth to sin; and sin,
when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

Pt. 3:
Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,
and comes down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth,
that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.
So then, my beloved brethren,
let every man be swift to hear,
slow to speak, slow to wrath;

Pt.4:
for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness,
and receive with meekness the implanted word,
which is able to save your souls.
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer,
he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;
for he observes himself, goes away,
and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

Pt.5:
But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it,
and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work,
this one will be blessed in what he does.
If anyone among you thinks he is religious,
and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart,
this one's religion is useless.
Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this:
to visit orphans and widows in their trouble,
and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
