oh sweeties, this is only about being Taiwanese people...they're shy everywhere. It is not about respect. And this is a rehearsal (for audio and stage testing) and none of the guests knew there'll be belly dancing, that's why they look surprised. In Taiwanese culture, people don't get used to show their feelings and emotions in public (afraid to be considered rude), and they get used to keep away from the performers....that's confucisim, different from the West.

I once danced (with my troupe) at a large birthday party for a mixed audience. We actually had several women GLARING at us! We were even wearing hareem pants and none of us were coming onto the men. They were just idiots.
