I am getting a 125gallon in a few weeks for my Alligator Gar but it has a crack in it. I think if I buy a price of Plexiglas and silicon it over the cracked glass it might be able to hold water. What do you think. Also the Plexiglas will be much larger than the crack, and it will be siliconed in the tank not outside the tank. Do you think the water pressure might be to much for it and brake the glass, please answer me back.
Very nice. I love daces. they are sop damn pretty and the darters are quite cute. i live really close to Ohio over here in PA and we have a lot of the same fish. i had a smaller version of this kind of a set up bu like you we had an extreme summer and a power outage all day and that killed a lot of them even with me using a battery operated air stone and putting in pop bottles filled with ice to keep it cooler.
how did u collect the fish and where from? i live in cleveland, ohio and was think of doing a tank similar once the weather breaks. want to do a darter tank the simulates a stream, constant flow.
Beautiful Bio-tope! Wish it was legal to create a tank like this in Canada... NOPE!!!! Can't keep a sunfish in an aquarium... Oh but you can take as many as you want home to eat !!! The system works!
As an Ohio resident, im very familiar with the species youve chosen for your tank. Very well done. I have a few questions though... What temp is the tank kept at? Are you using a chiller? Also, what species of plant are you using? It looks like a valineris sp. Again, good job!
Thanks! The tank has been taken down for some time now, but when it was running the temperature stayed between 68 and 84 *F. A wide range, & the upper reaches proved fatal for a good number of the species in the tank. That is actually a main reason I took down the tank. I live in a small apartment (broke college student) and the air conditioning is terrible in the summer. I couldn't keep the water cool enough to adequately care for the fish in the tank. To do it well would require a chiller.
I love our local fish. Theres quite a diversity of species to choose from and most adapt well to captivity provided the temps are kept below 70F and are provided strong aeration. The lack of a chiller is the reason i dont keep these fish myself! Even the "economy chillers" are too expensive!
There is an incredible diversity to choose from when stocking a tank like this. I wish I had a chiller for it, but they cost at least a few hundred dollars. Their are local fish that can tolerate warmer temperatures (Spotfin Shiners, Bluntnose Minnow, Blackstripe Topminnow, etc.) that I'll stick to keeping until I can get a chiller.
A majority of my studies is on fish in the Great Lakes area. Maintaining them in aquariums adds to my studies by being able to observe their behavior.
If the fish are thriving long-term, and the maintenance doesn't kill you, it's not overstocked. I have a planted bio-wheel filtered 10, cycled a long time, with 3 neons, 3 glowlites, 3 harlequins, a honey gourami, kuhli loach & 2 'feeder guppy' males used to cycle it in the beginning and haven't lost a single fish. Wish I had a bigger school of only species (next tank!) but the fish are healthy and I enjoy watching it and caring for it it -- and isn't pleasure the main reason for doing this?
Also, I haven't seen his filtration or know his water change scedule. If they are both good, then this would not be overstocked.
But based on first glance I would say it is.
Fisherman, just because you have a goldfish or a 10 gallon doesn't mean you know fish. I have 15 tanks running right now, totalling over 3500 gallons.
Are those warpaint shiners? nice.

Very well put together tank, but I think you should add 2 thicker looking fish, instead of all narrow fish. aka (a few gourami's would work nicely)

The Gouramis would defeat the purpose of the "Ohio Based" Stream Community Tank.

nice, know your stuff. but i wonder, why would you do this fish?

LOL, fisherman, where did you dig up that one inch per gallon rule? No serious fishkeeper has beleived that was true since the 80's.
So then....I could put a 55" arowana in a 55 gallon tank? It would be larger than the tank.
You can only put 5 neons in a 10 gallon tank? You could easily add 3 times that.
It all depends on filtration, water change schedule, and bio-load. There is no set rule, hundreds have tried to make one.
People that still follow that 1" per gal rule are retarded.
