  • Nice presentation, but I also was concerned that no mention was made of wearing a mask so as not to inhale the dust. I love using this stuff. I've lived in Texas 6 years and DE and Boric acid are the only 2 forms of pest control I use in my house.

  • Informative video. Quite expensive though to use in an orchard.

Has anyone tried mixing DE in water, agitate the mixture continuously to prevent settling whilst spraying the same unto the leaves. As such we save on spraying cost?

    Thanks.

  • very good video. I've used it indoors with great success. I just started to use it in the garden and have actually ate it a few times just to see what the talk was about, lol. A dust mask is a good idea though when you aplpy it.

  • it kills fish so dont let it get in the waterways

  • Does it work on white flies?

  • Nice video..... I have used DE for years and as several people have already mentioned be sure to use only FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth. I eat it every morning and I feed it to my dogs and cats I also use it inside and outside of the house. I have a blog about DE and I get mine from EarthWorks....... diatomaceous(dot)net .... You'll have to replace the (dot) with a . for the link to work properly

  • how much is it?

  • where do you find de, i went to alot of places like lowes and tractor supply, no one seems to know much about it, it really does look awesome, found it online but everyone charges a ton for the shipping

  • im knoticing a lot of yellowing on the edges of the leaves of my vegetable plants, what do you think it is and what do you recommend ?

  • How many time do u use it weekly or monthly.

  • you didn't mention that there's 3 different kinds of DE. the gardening kind, the kind you use in swimming pools and foodgrade. i use foodgrade DE on my animals. outside as well as inside. i sprinkle it on their food it keeps them worm free. i also use it in the house for bedbugs i just sprinkle it around the legs of the bed it will kill any small insect to about the size of a scorpion but it won't harm earthworms for some reason.i also use it in my worm bin

  • i"m sure its already been mentioned but just in case:

If you are going to use DE make sure its food grade and not the stuff you get at the pool supply store. :)

  • Diatomaceous earth is not selective, it will kill benificial insects as well as the bad ones. However when one gets overwhelmed with bad insects, it works great! Never use the pool grade, very bad to breathe in, always use the food grade diatomaceous earth. Garden Harvest Supply is a good online source.

  • wrong, doesnt dehydrate the bugs, your giving out wrong info

  • @GORT192 right and wrong... it dehydrates the bugs by having the bugs crawl over them and the D.E. will cut their outer "skin" therefore the pests will just "dry up" .... but/and/yet is also important to wear a mask (mouth-nose) to eliminate breathing the powder in while powdering your plants... for it would do the same on the inner layers of your lungs...

  • Very nice vidio awesome

  • Very nice vidio awesome

  • Good job on your video I liked it very much!

  • Good job on your video I liked it very much!

  • volume needs to be turned up !!

  • @GardenGirlTV can u pls do a livestock update?

  • @ Garden

  • were could I buy this on-line??

  • @queeny107

there is a guy who sells on yt he has a huge facility called EARTHWORKS look him up on YT. or Ebay has good rates be sure to get FOOD GRADe

  • @WonderWomanFan4life - Thank you!

  • my understanding is that u should use food-grade de, which costs a lot more, because the normal stuff will cut your lungs because of the way the molecules are, so, either use a mask while you're spraying or spend the big buks, once not air-borne it isn't dangerous...

  • Can you use this if you want bees and butterflies?

  • One "fact" that is not exactly correct: diatomaceous earth is not "an algae found in sedimentary rock." It IS the rock. It is made from ancient deposits of billions of tiny diatoms (which ARE plant-like algae) that settled out of water onto the bottom when they died. It IS sedimentary rock, formed by these ancient plants and is still being formed today in both fresh and salt water.

  • Mother Earth D ROCKS!

  • I would like to have one of those dusters. Where do you get it?

  • Patti, love your videos. I've heard that it can damage human and animal eyes, so please be careful when using. DE feels like tiny shards of glass to the touch. You might want to use proective glasses. Chickens and ducks will eat the bugs - but again, don't let them get DE in their eyes.

  • Good video. A little goes a looong way.

  • I love your videos, but whoever does your captioning is making a lot of grammatical errors and ruining your professional image. You need an editor (and I'm very cheap).

  • PLEASE NOTE...If you are going to use diatomaceous earth then you MUST USE FOOD GRADE..diatomaceous earht!!!!

Otherwise it makes the plant unfit for human consumption...!

And use it sparingly and wisely...it kills the beneficial bugs such as bees and lady bugs.

  • Patti is awesome... I am grpwing TickleMe Plants with my kids. They love watching the leaves suddenly close and even the branches droop when you Tickle It!

Just google TickleMe Plant. It is easy to grow and is one amazing animated plant!

  • You all should definitely try using Orange Guard Home Pest Control. Its natural, smells good, and really works!!

  • @tormcp my zoukini and squash became black and die , what to do?

  • Thanks for the tip, but you should do some research before telling everyone how safe it is,,, Cause its not.... Ask the minors who mine this stuff how many coworkers they know with lung problems....

  • the razor sharp, microscopic DE damages the exo skeleton of the bug...

and its not totally safe. for instance you couldnt pay me to apply it as she does. you dont want that stuff in your eyes or lungs. is a legitimate inhalation hazard. please dont do what you see here, use a mask rated to handle particles the size of DE, seals around your nose and mouth, and i also recommend goggles.

better yet. i prefer lady bugs.

  • Hello

Can you please tell me where I can get hand held crop duster like the one here in your video or similar as long as it is handheld.

    Thanx again

    Gideon

  • Hello

Will this DE kill those nasty gnats on and in my strawberry plants ?

These gnats fly and stay on my strawberry plants and soil

    Please help

    Thanks

    Gideon

  • check out the site lubilosa , they carry green muscle a natural fungus that wipes out grasshoppers and locusts, it is safe for all plants, soils and for livestock too

  • What about worms, ladybugs, praying mantises, and bees? Won't the poweder also hurt them?

  • Dayo Tomatoes earth seems like amazing stuff!

  • This stuff rocks and is so cheap. I take it internally for parasites (which we all have by the day). Note of caution, be careful not to dust too close to flowers. Can harm bees and hummingbirgs. Great video.

  • where is mask?any thing dusty is injurious to health

  • We use diatomaceous earth before, but be careful about breathing in the dust, the silica it contains is harmfull for the lungs.

It's like tiny chards of broken glass. Silica sand is what you use to sandblast, but they wear respirators.

  • one of my dreams is to have a garden like yours

  • great videos!!!!

  • Diatomaceos earth is bad to inhale so wear a mask ....Asbestos is a naturally occurring too ......DE is approximately 3% magnesium, 33% silicon, 19% calcium, 5% sodium, 2% iron ..........Silicosis (also known as Grinder's disease and Potter's rot) is a form of occupational lung disease caused by inhalation of crystalline silica dust, and is marked by inflammation and scarring in forms of nodular lesions in the upper lobes of the lungs.

  • u need to buils a rainwater catch...ur poring chlorine on ur olants...also de is made of fossilized diatome, not algae

  • Diatomaceos earth is an excellent slug repellent when it is sprinkled around the base of plants. Under a microscope it looks like tiny shards of broken glass. It does have to be reapplied after rain. It slices the bodies of the slugs and they get dehydrated. I only use it at the base of plants. There is a fantastic spray you can make with habanero peppers and garlic.

  • I was told that soap is an effective pesticide coz, of borax in as a main ingredient of making soap. That it dehydrates insects too.

How do you size that up please some info.

This is jovenhats_jr one of your constant youtube enthusiast

  • its fake. it doesn't work

  • no it works so does soap but only till it rains .......slugs I like taking a cup planting in the ground filling in half up with beer do it a dusk Lots of fun and soapy water for the rest of the pest but the slug are the worst ...... the beer works great

  • I got to file this one in my gardening folder. Since I'm a rookie gardener this will help big time. Thanks for educating us on this one.

  • so what do you do for jap. Beatles?? im in N IL, those little buggers get everywhere! i mean everywhere. i try the garlic-onion-cayenne- soap-flour-pyrethrum, and ive tried combining them together it works but only for a minute. its horrible seeing those beatles invade., ive even tried traps. i refuse to let them get me this year. what do you all suggest? its got to be organic.

  • I'm in Central IL, and those SOBs destroyed my grapes last year. I just bought a bottle of Fungicide 3, by Schultz, and tested it out on an unsuspecting japanese beetle. It was AWESOME! 10 minutes later, the beetle was literally falling apart. It's kind of pricey, but I plan on using it on all of my fruits and vegetables this year. I'll be looking around for other neem oil-based products that are cheaper.

  • Try something that's called "milky spore disease" it's a naturally occurring bacterium that is fatal to Japanese beetles. It's harmless to pets/humans and bees. You apply it to your lawn, and ONE application can last for 10-15 years. Try it! It works fantastic!

  • fantastic ill look into that thank you

  • where can i get one of those dusters?

  • They sell ones like them in the home depot (or any other home improvement store) gardening section.

  • Have you tried Neem oil? It shouldn't bother the beneficials, such as ladybugs and pollinators, as long as you spray at dusk. It tends to make the plant unpleasant/repellant to chewing and sucking insects, and also controls some fungals, black spot, powdery mildew, anthracnose and rust. Google around. I spray my transplants before setting out so they don't get chewed up before they thrive, and use it sparingly when I have more damage than the plants can sustain. Try 'Surround' for your apples.

  • if it dehydrates the bugs, won't it dehydrate the plants (or your animal if you use it on him?) can it be applied to the soil instead? i heard something about copper tape as a deterrent to snails and slugs but haven't had a chance to try it out myself.

  • It only works on animals with Exo-Skeletons. Be sure to use a mask though, to protect your lungs from the dust.

    Use egg shells for slugs.

  • I'd suggest wearing a dust mask while working with DE. I'm not sure what it says on the product label, but it never hurts to check before using anything even when it's organic in nature.

  • I love your videos, by the way. Your garden is definitely something to aspire to!

  • Agreed, her garden is superb! She really knows her stuff! I always look forward to her videos =)

  • I would also suggest increasing your tolerance for bugs as part of an "integrated pest management" system. Our culture almost always exclusively looks for external solutions, when it's our mind (or cultural story) that is the biggest reason we've poisoned the entire planet.

  • I don't know why you do this. DE kills even the "good bugs", even the ladybugs that would eat your aphids for you. It kills bees. It kills everything.

Aphids hide under the leaves so this would not help much, and a strong rain undoes your work.

I do think it is excellent for killing true pest bugs like fleas or lice on animals.

  • I am with you. I use it only twice a year. I stalk my garden with Lady bugs, I use it when I get infested with the nasty bugs.

  • some metals like copper i believe give a mild shock to slugs they wont cross the barrier, i also hear that" bran" circled around plants will stop them they dont like to eat bran. stay away from things that will kill bee's for sure. WE NEED BEES and lady bugs in our gardens.. Gardengirl even once a year is not cool if it kills bees...there are better ways im sure.....i liked your idea for having chickens for the jap beetles but the DE that nasty and can't be organic friendly.

  • @LucieLettuce If you get food safe diatomacious earth ( yes there are two types one used in comercial pest control:added harmful ingredients, the other is safe for human ingestion) it kills worms like no other and it works in animals and is also safe for humans to. Icky thought but most humans are infected with one type of parasite or another and never know it. Just a cool piece of info ;)

  • Cool, you're a head of me questions.

    Thanks Patti.

  • YOU RULE, PATTI!!

  • I've been looking for good organic pest control...I'll definetly be checking that out. Thanks for posting!!

  • Excellent! I was going to ask you about pest control in the garden, so you beat me to it!

If I may make a request:

Could you please post a video on making your own rain barrels? Thanks!
